My neighbors own APBTs, a Husky, and a lil mixed breed rat size dog. They are pretty good people and last month were kind enough to give me a ride to a doctors appointment. M, the guy, came over to let me know he was ready to leave and I asked him in while a grabbed my stuff. Didn't want to be rude.
M made it inside the living room before Ike sauntered up all casual like to say "Hi!". Before Ike could get within 3 feet M was stumbling out the door and in his haste he even managed to whack his head on the storm door. He totally freaked. I assured him Ike is a total marshmallow, that M's wife has been over and she loves Ike, and that Ike wouldn't hurt him. No dice, lol. Without a single threatening gesture Ike scared the crap out of him. And he's a dog person!!! Enter M and D's friend, J, who is staying with the neighbors. J is living with the above mentioned dogs and has his own Pit Bull with him. I decided to take the dogs and my middle kid for an early walk. J's daughter was with us, so we stopped by to ask if she could come along. Usually J is already at work when we go walking, so this was the first time he actually met my dogs even though his daughter has been at my house every day for the last week. We go up to him, Ike is being very polite on his leash...sitting, wagging his tail, giving his most charming bully grin and everything. J wouldn't come and pet him with a 10 foot pole no matter how I encouraged him. He said Ike is a very big dog with a "head like a bowling ball" and he didn't want to take chances. As if! Like I would have an aggressive dog around with all the kids! Harrumph! Really, guys, really? Big, manly, dog lovers afraid to pet an American Bulldog with his owner right there, encouraging and reassuring? Poor Ike was so emo about. His lil heart was broken. He takes it very personally when people don't pet him because when he was a pup everyone everywhere we went petted and fawned over him so much that he expects it now. When people won't pet him he drops his head and tail and will mope while walking painfully slow for blocks or until some random stranger loves on him. I told my husband both stories and he doesn't believe me. He thinks I made this crap up because he can't fathom anyone fearing the white and brindle marshmallow. I just don't get it. How the hel can you own and/or live with a bunch of APBT and a Husky...hardcore dog breeds...and be afraid of lil ole Ike??? |

Bring Ike here and I'll love him up one side and down the other!! People are strange; and if you can believe this...I have actually had a few people (and yes grown men, grown big men included) over the years afraid of Veronica". I mean seriously, you've seen her; she looks like a puppy. Hell, she acts like a puppy. A smallish 50 pound peanut...go figure. |

If it makes Ike feel any better, lots of people are scared of Ethel, and she's probably as big marshmallow as he is. To make Ike's last 24 hours of misery complete today was nail clip, ear clean, dose w Ivomec and flea preventative day. He's currently moping in his crate probably thinking humans were a bad species for his kind to hook up with 10,000 or so years ago. Just laying there giving me the "Mooshy-Face pure misery lazer beam eyes". |

It's that way with our Lulu dog too and she's an American Bulldog. The biggest cream puff you ever saw, sleeps with the goats for crying out loud, let my youngest boy learn to walk hanging on to her collar and people walk around her sometimes instead of just walking by. Never ceases to amaze me. Ike gets the same treatment Lulu does when we go out. A few people get excited and want to come pet him, but most give us an obviously wide berth. I'd never even heard of the breed until about 5 years ago when I was researching breeds to decide what kind of dog I wanted. I didn't believe it when I read more about the breed and found passages about them being a bit emotionally sensitive until I raised Ike. Good God, that dog is the most emo creature I have ever seen. Yet he has decent prey drive and has on occasion even acted like a guardian breed when someone was messing around the house for nefarious purposes late at night. But otherwise he is just the biggest, neediest, gentle giant. What really blew my mind was the whole time I was standing on the lawn trying to convince J my dog wasn't going to eat him M and D's 3 year old daughter came running up to scratch and hug on Ike. They're the same size when she's standing and he's sitting. They've been buddies since she was about 2 and are mutually fascinated with each other. Yet this grown man was truly scared of him. Hell, every kid on the block likes Ike. Guess they haven't learned fear yet. |

Same here, bring him on over and I'll give him all the love he wants lol An American Bulldog? Where I come from, nobody fears them! Bring Ike on over here, people will be lining up to love on him! I just can't imagine someone actually being able to resist an American Bulldog! What is wrongwith people these days? some people just dont make sense, poor little ike Cliff, you don't have that kind of time. There's a lot of dog there to pet and he'd be content to literally spend hours letting you scratch where his tail meets his rump. If you start at his neck and work your way back he'll turn himself into a slowly melting puddle of doggy jell-o on the floor at your feet ![]() |
