Default Scratching furniture
I'm thinking about getting a new leather sofa suite, but I'm really worried that the cats are going to scratch it. Is there anything I can do?

You can get scratch pad things which go onto the sofa legs so that the cat scratches those up instead. I didn't get any (don't like them) when I bought my sofas, I bought some scratching posts instead - now my sofas are torn to shreds!

I'm not sure, but why is it that cats love furniture so much? I have proper scratching post which they ignore and always go for the furniture instead!

Tell me about it! My cats love the sofa arms, a large speaker which is on the floor, the door frames (luckily they haven't been painted yet - the frames not the cats!), in fact anything except their scratching posts! I even bought one of the super duper ones from PAH with tunnels and stuff, but they just sit on it.

I have leather sofas, what I did after reading it somewhere else - can't remember now - was putting double sided tape on all the corners for the first few months. Cats HATE the feeling of this sticky tape - so they go to scratch their claws and it feels awful so they don't like it. Cats learn pretty quickly and get into habits. As long as you break them of the habit of scratching it from the start - touch wood - they shouldn't go back to it. I took the sticky tape off after about 3 months and it's been fine ever since. My computer chairs on the other hand, I never bothered doing that with and the top is ripped to pieces.

I think you can also buy a spray that makes the furniture smell bad to cats but undetectable to humans, that makes them not want to go near it.

I've tried that cat spray that humans aren't supposed to detect and my cat loved it! Meh. I use citronella oil on chair/table legs and she hates the smell of that. The trick, as has already been mentioned, is to break them of the habit. It took me a couple of months but after using the citronella oil and a water spray to spray her with if she went near the table/chair legs, she now ignores them and uses her scratch post.

Oh Furie, I think I might try that, it's too late for my sofas but it might be good for when they scratch the door frames. If I can get them trained before I paint the door frames then hopefully they won't do it when I've finished decorating.

Both my boys have no front claws but I would hate to see my furniture if they did! They both think they are scratching all over the place...of course part of it is leaving their scent and marking territory with the glands in their paws.....but it even sounds like scratching.....they love a certain chair, and a laundry hamper the best.

My solution to cat claws is simple. Once a month I take my cats to the vet or to the groomer to get their nails cut. It only costs me a total of $20 per month for both cats, and then I do not have to worry about their nails at all. They still use scratch pads because it feels good to them.

Me I am not very proud of what I did, but I fought verbally with my cat 2-3 times, I told him some very bad words, and he stopped scratching the couch.
I have a leather couch also, and I am living in a rented apartment, so I don't wanna pay for the couch when I'l leave from here ... So I start explaining this to my cat ... first nicely, and after roughly.
Till the end he understood that I am very pissed and upset, and that I'll stop loving him that much, and he stopped scratching it
I'am lucky, he preferred me over the couch
