Because I believe this stereotype about cats, we've never owned a cat when we had fish, or visa versa. I am suspicious of a cat who watches anything too intently. I believe it's sizing up the competition. My cat used to sit on my desk while i was on the computer, and I could see than she was watching the mouse on the screen - no pun intended . . .

I would definitely not trust my cats near a fish tank
|
I had a goldfish as a teen and a standard fish bowl. Then we took in a stray. It wasn't long before we came home from school and found the goldfish with no head floating at the top of the water. Hard lesson we learned that week. Cat's like fish food and don't mind playing in the water with food on the brain. I haven't owned any fish since.

My cat hasn't really been bothered much by a fish tank, but he was obsessed with the Tegu viv, and also we once came home to find he'd eaten 3 Beardie babies! He was in the 'doghouse' for a while after that!

I had a fish tank many years ago, and of course, a cat. And yes the cat was trying to get to them, so the only way to prevent it was to place the tank in a hard to reach place and cover the top. I did not experience any significant problems afterwards http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.png

I used to have a fish or rather the family did, in one of those plastic fish tanks. My old cat pushed it off the side, got soaked and never went near a tank again (the fish was fine too)

My cats may sit on the floor and stare up at it on occasion but otherwise they couldn't care less. The cats like to snuggle up on the windows anyway.

I have one of those vertical tubes with fake fish. I thought my cats would love it, but they do not. I guess I have saved myself hundreds of dollars on buying an aquarium since they probably would not like that either. However, these cats are very intelligent breeds. Maybe they know that the fish in the tube are fake, so I could be wrong about the aquarium. It doesn't matter, because I live in a closet that has nowhere near enough room for an aquarium.

Cats and fish tanks
It's no secret that cats tend to love watching fish in fish tanks.
Do yours try to get to them? Have they ever successfully fished one out through the top of the tank? Do you have to cover every hole possible to keep them out or do they prefer to only watch, so you don't have to worry? |
That is funny that you mention this. I don't have fish and cat as pets together at one time because of this reason. I once had a cat who always loved to watch our fish. I always had it in a tank with a lid on and books on top just in case. However, whenever I glanced at my cat she only just starred at the tank. One day I got home from work and the lid was off and my fish was gone. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/frown.png It was a sad day for me as a child.

We used to have a cat and fish. We no longer have either one of them. My cat used to watch the fish but fortunately, never got up to the tank and never tried getting into the tank. I think that the only thing she really ever did was just watched them. She was a pretty good cat but got very lazy towards the end.

I actually had stopped having a fish since my cat had eaten one of my two fishes before. At first I am puzzled if the fish jumped out of the small aquarium but after searching around it and no trace, I am sure it was my cat as I had caught him before trying to put his paw inside the aquarium. Lol

I have a very tight lid on our tank. My cat gizmo would be in there if he could!!
|
Yes I can agree that cats are fascinated by fish in fish tanks. My sister's cat licks the outside of the fish tank. it is so strange. She also climbs on top of it and tried to pry open the lid. She has not managed to open the tank ever, but when the fish see her they scurry to one end of the tank.

this is difficult to prevent the fishes safe form the cats. they always have the keen eyes on the fish and don't want to miss any chance to get them. i used to keep my fish tank, which is out of range for my cat.
