Hmm dogs eating things....

Especially other dogs poop. Never had too much a problem with this once the dogs are over a year old. It's not very appealing to watch, especially when you are yelling at them to stop but they just keep digging in right infront of you.

Maybe they really like what they ate the first time around... My parents dog does this and then she wants to lick your face and this really grosses me out. They try to pick up after, she poops so she is not tempted. Thank goodness my dog does not do this.

I'm sure eating a pile of poop that's high in protein isn't the worst thing for a dog to eat. I've heard of dogs trying to eat shampoo for example.
Although I knew someone years ago who fed their dog big macs every so often. That dog sadly passed away but it wasn't a surprise for me.

I"m sure my dogs have done this before, and then they want to lick all over you which is gross. Since they have a large pasture to run in, its not always easy to pick up after them, and keep them from doing this. It has not seem to effect them in the way to make them sick or anything. I wouldn't be to worried about it.

It's called coprophagia. Most of the time, it's normal and harmless but it can be caused by vitamin imbalance. Studies have showed that an insufficiency in Vitamin B1 can cause them to eat poop. I'm not sure if this incidence is connected but you did mention that he has pre-existing neurological issues and I remember that Vitamin's B1, B6, and B12 are for the memory.

There are also instances that in a pack of dogs, the submissive one will eat the poop of the dominant dog.

Lastly, you could try using stool deterrents to keep him away from it. I hear pumpkin and pineapple works for other people. And you could always keep the environment stool free- just to be on the safe side.

I caught one of my two eating poo today. He doesn't normally do that, he's fed a very good quality food (Arden Grange lamb and rice), and aside from his pre existing neurological issues, he is very healthy. Has anyone else ever caught their dogs doing that, and what did you think the reason was for it? It's gross, I know. I have caught a previous dog doing that. I don't know the reason, but he was okay afterwards. I just kept an eye on her after that.

If they smell a lot of protein in the poop then it will entice them to eat it. Our dog tries to eat the cat poop all the time because it has a high protein content; so the same goes with another dog's poop. It sounds like the food you feed them has a lot of protein in it, so this will be a natural instinct for them.
