I have never heard of a dog being obsessed with licking, but as another poster had recommended, you should go to a vet! I was thinkin about keeping one of those mouth harnesses on your golden retriever, but that might seem a little cruel.

Just a mad thought here, but I don't suppose she could have a touch of thrush on her tongue? The licking could be her way of trying to releive the discomfort.

Although all dogs like to lick, it sounds like your dog has a real obsession with licking. I have never heard of a sickness that causes licking, but I guess it could be possible. It sounds like she has OCD; but is that possible that dogs can have that? I hope you are able to stop this.

Default She's a real licker
I have a question that I am hoping someone might be able to help me with. I have a 6 year old golden retriever. She loves to lick. She licks everything in site. If she can't lick someone or something, she will lick the air just so that she can lick. It drives me crazy. She has always been like that. It is the only thing that I don't like about her. Someone told me one time that it is a sickness of some sort but I can't remember what she called it. Is there something that I can give her or do to help her some with this constant licking? She would be a much better dog than she already is if I can get her to stop licking me and everyone/everything else. If my hand is down when I'm walking, she likes my hand and if not my hand, my pants or anything else.

Yes it is possible for dogs to have behavioural problems like ocd, but this sounds more like a tick that she cant stop.

See a vet

I went looking for some answers for you and this site has some pretty good information:

http://www.dog-adoption-and-training...g-licking.html

It may not all apply to you, but it's worth skimming through and considering when/why your dog might be licking so much. I agree to see a vet if it's obviously too much and you're concerned there's something wrong, but it could just be something natural.

I saw an episode of 'me or the dog' with a dog that had a compulsion to lick stuff constantly so its definately a recognized problem with dogs.

Let us know how you get on and best of luck
