Weight

One of my cats, a tortoiseshell weighs just over 5kg and to be honest is starting to look quite podgy. What's a healthy weight for an adult cat? Should I be worried?

Apparently adult cats should weight between 3.5kg and 5kg but it depends on how long (tall?) they are, their general size and bone density. One of my cats Alize is very small build but he weighs just under 5kg, although you wouldn't think it to pick him up or to look at him. Some of the others are much bigger in every way (although he still beats the hell out of them!) but they're not overweight, they're just more 'solid' if you see what I mean?
If you're worried, take him to the vets and ask them, you can get various diet foods which will help him (or her!) slim down, but a vet should be able to tell you whetehr they need it or not.

My local vet does free nurse days once a week when you can just go in and get advice on things like diet, worming, flea treatments etc. it might be worth seeing the nurse. If she is overweight its mainly a case of making sure the diet is right, cutting down portions and then trying to encourage them to exercise more - lots of playtime perhaps?

My oldest is 6 and weighs 18 pounds and the youngest is 2 and weighs 16 pounds which are both over average. Don't know what kilograms that is...I am an American.
