Dogs sleeping in your bed?
 

I was wondering how many people let their dogs sleep in their bed? Nitro always slept with me but his trainer told me he should not be allowed because I am saying he is the pack leader and can try to take on that role. I started crating him at night but recently I started letting him sleep with me again.

I talk to a lot of people that all let their dogs sleep with them and they don't have any issues. He is very obedient for 4.3 months and doesn't display any signs of dominance (yet)...

My old APBT (Spike- R.I.P) had issues of trying to dominate so he was not permitted on the furniture or in the bed. I like him (Nirto) sleeping in my bed, but if I am only setting him up for problems later I will start crating him again.

Mine sleeps with me he has never tried to show any dominance over me. He has slept with me since he was 8 weeks old I did crate train him but I also allowed him to sleep with me on certain nights when he was very young. He's 2 now so we only crate him when we leave the house. But he sleeps with me or my daughter he's usually at right on my legs and doesn't move all night lol. I have never heard of anyone saying letting a dog sleep with you say's you as the owner are not the pack leader and may try to assume the role I think that's silly. I know trainers and good ones who have dogs they work in sports that also sleep in the bed with them so I guess it's just a matter of opinion but I have never had any issues with any of my dogs.

No problem here, either. She's a bit of a blanket hog, but that's not a huge deal.

Henry doesn't sleep with us all the time, just when one of us gets up and leaves.

Now he sleeps in our bed while we're gone and sleeps on the couch with us often. The only issue I would see with a dog sleeping with you is if they start resource guarding the bed. Never had that problem. Henry does wait to be invited, and he will get down if you ask him. We're polite to him and he's polite to us http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png

To me sleeping with a dog is one of the greatest joys of dog ownership.

Dominance theory is misunderstood and generally outdated as it is commonly used in reference to dog training:

Not us. I can't stand having anything/one touch me when I sleep. Dogs, kids, husband, whatever. I need my space or I'm too aware of their presence to really rest.

Now naps, maybe, sometimes, if I'm just relaxing versus sleeping. :-)

The dominance thing is a lie, I wouldn't worry about it.

My dogs used to sleep with me every night. I have no problem with dogs being in the bed but lately I've made the rule of not allowing then on the bed all the time. They still get to sleep on the bed sometimes, only when I put the extra sheet down.

I just can't handle the damn dirt particles that always end up on my bed! My blue sheet was turned brown because of them. The fur doesn't bother me, just that darn dirt. I love my bed now, it's free of dirt! But I allow them to sleep with me 2-3 times a week if they want to.

I've had no issues with my dogs. My Lab x loved the bed and always behaves. I can't say much about my Kelpie x because she prefers the futon/couch rather then my bed!

I always have at least one dog in my bed every night. It gets crazy cozy when all 4 are up there on cold nights.http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/biggrin.png

And that dominance crap is just that, crap. My dogs know the bed is a privilege, and they'll get a whooping for getting snarky over it with any person or creature, and that odds are at some point they'll get kicked, rolled on or shoved off through the night as I'm an "aggressive" sleeper.

bed whore here lol its a king and he wont stop digging his body into my lower back at night. not good

I believe that if there aren't any issues then why not! As long as they are invited in and it's on your terms! Dominance is crap with the bed thing unless your dog is having those issues already. If not that hell it's your bed. Here is my choice lol

Marsha and Kitty sleep with me every night. Sometimes I let Conway sleep in the bed too but he is like an octopus with his legs all over. Generally he is crated, mexi gets the living area and Umah is in the hallway.

My dogs sleep loose in the house, I sleep with my bedroom door open. I couldn't imagine regulating my dogs to a small part of the house to sleep in, but my dogs all get on wonderfully, so I understand those that have dogs that don't get on well.

Nick & Frankie sleep with me during the week, Rosie sleeps on her bed next to my bed. On the weekends when DH is home, Nick sleeps in his bed next to our bed and Frankie sleeps in her crate at the foot of the bed. I just close, but don't latch the door and she stays in her crate until morning.
Rosie will SOMETIMES sleep with me, but she refuses to sleep on the same side of the bed as Frankie & Nick, and I get too hot with dogs on both side, so I end up kicking everyone off.

Tank goes to bed with my daughter then is stolen by my son and when he is asleep Tank sneaks in with me every night.
