A Dog Who knows where his Home is.
(And the reason why 'Pit Bulls' are KNOWN escape artist.)
Today was the day, Jud was going to go to his new home across the street. The roughly two acres of land, plenty of things to put his little nose into. Cats to chase, Coons to catch. Today was the day. So my husband and I placed Snow in her kennel, hooked Jud onto his leash. I walked him across the street while he went to get this huge piece of wood to block the gate to the dog pin inside the fenced in junk yard; at least until we can get the gap fixed. I wasn't all that worried about it because the property was fenced in if he was to get out. So we fixed up the gate and placed him inside the dog pin. He barked and whined. Didn't like the idea of being away from the people who have cared for him for the past month; much less outside while it was warm instead of inside under the air conditioner asleep. No he wasn't not going to have it. Satisfied that he was placed where he was going to be, my husband and I decided to run to town and eat and pick up a few groceries. We figured if he broke out of the dog pin he would be fine just being loose in the junk yard and agreed to check up on him when we returned home. So we hopped into the truck and went to Vivian, Louisiana (about 15 miles from here for those who doesn't know) and ate some Pizza and got what we needed for the house. In all, I would say we where gone about an hour. When we returned, pulling into the driveway we saw from the shaded tree across the street little Jud getting up and trotting over across the street to greet us as we open the doors. Coming straight to the passenger side, like he knew I was sitting in that see he tried to climb into the vehicle and greet me with loving kisses. I'm puzzled; How did he get out? Though I haven't gone and checked; I planned to this evening. So this young pup, who had probably a whole hour to go anywhere he wanted to patiently waited for us to return home and let his little butt into the house; where now he sleeps comfortably under the air conditioner by his bone under my feet. I plan to walk over this evening when it cools off and see if I can find how he escaped not only the dog pin but also the fence that surrounds the two acres of the property. This little story, though nothing bad happened, is a friendly reminder why a dogs containment needs to be set up so the dog cannot escape. And it doesn't matter how sound you think the containment is, if a dog wants out; (s)he will get out. Jud will not be going across the street to stay until I get all his break out places fixed and he can no longer escape not only the dog pin, but the property. |
So wait... is Jud going to become a penned up junkyard dog?
You knew he could escape the pen, but you put him in there anyways... |
No, I didn't know he could escape because we blocked up the only part we could see. The pin is in the ground and has a roof. I haven't seen how he got out yet so I don't know if he dug a hole or what. And yes, he is going across the street for now. I still plan on doing all that I said with him. Just because he is going across the street doesn't make him any less my dog or change how he will be cared for.

May i ask why you're choosing to move him?
|
Not enough room in my home for two medium sized dogs? He was only staying here until he got all his shots. Also the term of agreement for me to keep him was that he goes across the street. It was something that was planned and I thought I said on here that was going to happen with him? I don't live in a fancy home or anything. I actually live in a rather small trailer.
When we manage to get our own place (Hopefully a year from now), he will be coming with us. And I just wanted to add that there was nothing wrong with the pin or how we fixed it up. He dug out and then opened the gate to the large yard himself. -.=' I have a smart dog on my hands. |

Is there anything stopping him from digging out the fenced area even if you did put a lock on it? Perhaps a nice chain spot would be your best bet. be sure to provide shelter and plenty of water (obviously). If you choose to go with a chain spot make sure he won't be able to rap himself around anything and choke himself. And i'm sure you won't be like this, but please don't be an "out of sight out of mind" owner and be sure to visit him on a daily basis. |
Of course not! I love my little bubby. The dog pin in general, where he dug out, the ground I found out is very soft so I am thinking the only way to keep him in there is to hot wire the inside of the pin. As for the gate, He can't dig out because its mostly hard hard cemented ground. The gate is already chained and locked at the top. I think a bungie cord is needed at the middle and bottom of the gate to keep him from pushing it open. But until all this is FIXED he is NOT going back over there.
The Pin in particular has a roof over it and a dog house inside of it. It also has food and water bowls. I plan on getting a wash tub and placing inside like I do for Koi and Zeus so he has plenty of water and a food bowl that he cannot tear up easy. Probably the stainless steal one I currently use sometimes for additional water in the house. |
Sounds like you've got everything under control and a smart dog.
BUT PLEASE, fix your spelling. It's a PEN, not a PIN. The first couple times I saw 'pin' I thought type, then it continuted. I almost couldn't finish because it bugged me so much. (sorry! couldn't help saying something about it) |
I get them confused typing. Sorry Kit!! D:

smart bugger, you might put a chian spot inside the pen, like where he can't reach the fence (so he can't jump over or dig under) I have that for my boys, its added safety measure (oh and you did post it on here that he was going over there I remember >.
|
LOL! Actually funny you said that about the chain spot inside the pen. I actually was just talking to my husband about it. We already have a similar set up for Koi inside her pen. I'll look tomorrow and make sure that there is nothing that he could get hung up on or anything.
|
You probably dont want your dog tangling with a Racoons by the way, they can mess up a dog baaad.
|
Poor pup http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/tongue.png Chain spot in the pen sounds about right.
I wouldn't trust a bungee cord to hold anything shut a dog might want to get through... well not with my Sophie anyways. She has opened dead bolts (from the inside) and our bathroom door, that has a lever type handle, multiple times. I could see her pushing and pushing on a door with a bungee and gettings enough space to squeeze through. |
yeah but if I get a nice chain spot inside the pen I wont need the bungie! LOL. Going to go over there today and see if it is possible.
@PITTSALLDAY - I'd rather a Coon then a Coyote or Wolf or Bear. |
I had a neighbors hound get into it with a coon and it took out his eye, they have nasty claws and rabies. Let your dogs mess with coons go ahead.
|
Hmm, You praise a guy for letting his dogs chase off a bear, but diss on me for saying my dog will probably keep coons out of the fence. ALL Animals carry Rabies. ALL Animals pose a threat to another. Your logic makes no sense. 0o; But Hey, thats your logic.

fence or cement or pavers on the bottom, put a top on the pen.
