lol, I think I've mentioned this before but some of the shelters in my area charge $400-$600 for puppies. I would not pay that for a rescue, I would pay 250 tho
As for an APBT from a good reputable breeder, I guess $500-$1000 but I'm a new to this.

It would depend on the breed, what the breeder has done in regards to health testing, titles for dogs (if I was looking for a competition/conformation dog), etc.

For a pet quality of any breed I wouldn't pay more than $300. I'd say $1000 would be my limit. For a rescue/shelter dog (even if purebred) I won't go higher than $100.

What about a show quality? Say you are interested in showing? (Any of the bully breeds..APBT, Amstaff, SBT, BT, etc)

Like I said, I wouldn't pay more than $1000 for an Amstaff. SBT, probably a little less. If you get "in" with breeders, you may get lucky and be given a pup. I've had to turn down multiple offers of pups from my show dog friends!

I paid 1300 for my sbt pup.
There are not a lot of breeders out this way.

Like I said, $600 to $800 for a "premium" APBT pup (on average). Could you pay more OR less ?? ... you betcha, depending on circumstance, opportunity and pedigree.

The thing is, for the vast majority of folks, showing in the ADBA is ALL about the dog having fun and the humans chance to mingle with like minded people and talk dogs. So, ANY registered pup within standards would fit that bill just fine.

Beyond that, research really well to know the bloodline, any medical anomalies that often occur in the pedigree and what temperament and traits the bloodline predominantly throws. Balance all those things with the lifestyle and activities that are a good fit for you and your dog. Unless you choose to campaign a dog, you really won't make that many shows, so the while the dog may be show quality it's most important that the dog "fits" into your home and your routine.

JoeBingo,
I know this is a long shot, but do you know any good reputable APBT breeders in the NE you would recommend? It has been very difficult for me to find one in my area. I already know it will be difficult to find one in New England but maybe a bit south?

Let me be clear... NE = North East lol not Nebraska

If you like Colby APBTs ...

Pete Colby. Newburyport Massachusetts

petecolby@colbypitbull.com

It may take a while for Pete to answer your email inquiry and questions. It took him a month to return my initial contact. But when he did so, he provided me with his cell phone number "to cut to the chase". Pete is very busy with things outside of dogs, he is inundated with requests and he isn't into computers that much, so if you're interested in a real deal linebred Colby pup ... have patience. Most think it's worth the wait.

Beyond that, my best recommendation is to try and get to some registry sanctioned shows and events in your area or contact some APBT clubs in the NE. As you know, dog people are for the most part, very friendly and anxious to talk about their dogs. Just take your time and do lots of research. Good Luck !!!

I spent $1300 plus shipping. I did a LOT of looking and couldn't find a breeder to compete with the one Moto came from, so I paid for the values and sensibility. Was it worth it? Hell yeah...I don't miss a dime of that cash.

WhonyGataxott 07-19-2012 06:04 PM

I would plan on $1,000-1,800. Unless something else comes up in the interim, the breeder I'm pretty much decided on (Dantero Malinois) costs $1,000 for a puppy... and I'd have to pay shipping unless I get really crazy and decide to road trip to So Cal and pick him up. You can find cheaper Mals, but IMO picking the right breeder is about a LOT more than just cost spent.

APBT's and AST's are less costly in most circles it seems like. I dunno, I feel if a breeder does a lot of really good things though and has working titled and health tested parents... I'd be willing to pay the same as what working shepherds usually go for.

Now, I would also like to look into working-bred, Czech line GSDs and they can cost a pretty penny. For a dog that runs so expensive even for puppies, I'd probably go for an adult that has already shown the qualities I'll be looking for.
Should only be $1,000-1,800 for a good GSD. Unless its a west German high showline dog prices generally aren't too bad. And even Huerta Hof starts at $1500. You should be able to find a good dog for not too much. The only person I know with a czech line girl is military, so I'm sure he got a discount. Dang she is a super duper nice dog!!! Drive for days!!!

AcecePesFeacy 07-19-2012 06:12 PM

this has been discussed before, it depends on the breed, I want a mastiff (leaning torwards English) and they are really expensive, also want a great dane which are even more expensive, but then I also want a show bred apbt (hoping for one from Boogieman one day) which I don't know how much it would be, might even be free as far as I know.

Depending on the dane color you're looking at, pet prices range from $800-$2000 for a pup out of CH health tested parents. Merles and mismarks are on the low end while harlequins are the high end. Fawns, brindles, blacks and blues are usually $1200-$1500.
