Default what is too hot? inside house temp. for our dogs?
The weather is finally changing and will be in the high 80s-90s all week! I do not have a/c in the house I only have a window mount unit in the bedroom and is on at night only!!! When I'm gone during the day the house gets to be about 80* is that too hot for my dog? He stays in a crate with a fan next to it, however he can't have water in the cage because he spills it immediately I tried the one that mounts to the cage but he knocks it off also. What can I do besides run an a/c all day...or is 80* fine...any input please

I don't think you have anything to worry aboutas far as temp if it's only in the eighties. If you want water in the crate with him you might try a Lixit bottle

I agree with catchrcall. Your dog should be fine.
Has he shown any signs of distress what so ever or was acting differently when you return?

At eighty plus degrees panting would be pretty normal. He's just cooling himself off.

How long is he in the crate?
Not being able to move around much probably IS a bit uncomfortable when it's hot...think about it when it happens to YOU. One spot when you're hot...kinda miserable.
If it's going to be up in the 90s with no AC, you'll have to watch him. Also, keep him away from the west side of your house or any areas with windows that seem to get hotter during the day.

Where do you live? If it's where it's dry, a swamp cooler can do wonders.

He should be okay in that "crate"!
You're in Buffalo? Never mind -- swamp cooler won't do you any good!

He will probably be ok, I would keep the fan on him when you are gone though. Of course, my dogs probably would freak out if it got that hot at my house, but I keep the AC set on 68-70 during the day while I'm gone.... I hate being hot, and love having my house like a meat locker!

Its going to be 110 here this week. I cannot afford to run my a/c cooler than 80-82 degrees. Dog and cats are fine. It's what they are used to.

I'm with SemasMom - It's been over 110F here, and even full blast, my swamp cooler only gets it down to about 80-82F and my dogs are fine... they don't even pant. Actually, the other day it was 80F in my house and my puppy got under the blankets on my bed

If it's a dog that can tolerate heat (sounds like it is), sounds fine to me. Seeing as you can't keep water in the kneel I would only have the fan blowing on a small portion of the crate so it doesn't become dehyrdrated. But that's me.

Have you thought about something like this? Since you run a fan for him anyway.

Using a dehumidifier will also help make it feel cooler. I personally loathe humidity.

Sometimes I tend to over think things LOL

I wonder if something like a jug or bottle or bladder of water that has been frozen overnight might work in the kennel?
Of course, as it thawed in the kennel ... there would be condensation (which he might lick off ;cool; ) ... and he might destroy it with chewing is another concern.
But IF it DID work, it just might help to have the cold package near him ... AND he might even lay on it.

What got me to thinking about this was an experience I had with my pup, Mason, at an outdoor event in which he was required to be crated for long periods of time and it was HOT !!!
I happened to have with me, a couple of those "flat" re-freezable packs that are used in shipment of food products such as frozen hams and turkeys. I was using them in my cooler to keep beverages cold.

WELL ... what I decided to do was place the ice cold re-freezable packs from the cooler, into the bottom of Mason's crate with a faux sheep skin pet bed (already in his crate) over the packs. Mason stretched out over those and was in HEAVEN !!! When it came time for Mason's participation in his class at the outdoor event ... he was fresh as a daisy as they say.

Of course, I HAD to carefully watch Mason to ensure he didn't chew on the re-freezable packs ... whatever the solution is in those packs most certainly wouldn't be good if ingested.

It's 93 here, 80ish in the house and all I have is a window fan and a couple of ceiling fans going (no AC). My dogs are used to it, and my Saint Bernard is barely panting (she also got a haircut awhile back).

He should be fine.

I keep it at 78 during the day while I'm gone. Any hotter and Ronon freaks out. I swear I could send that dog down to Antarctica and he would melt all the ice and flood the world!

At night, I turn it down to 74 otherwise he pants all night and keeps me up.

But most of my dogs are fine at 80 in the house. I leave a fan on the ones in a crate. And Pongo has a fan in the floor in front of his preferred laying spot. He is long coated and a senior so doesn't tolerate heat well.
