What is it with me lately? It seems like bad thing after bad thing keeps happening lately. First Kahlee decides she isn't going to play nice with others any more, and now Krayon has Kennel Cough..... WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?!?
Last night, around 10pm, Krayon kinda coughed. I didn't think too much of it, until it was happening every 2-3 minutes. And after the first few times, he started hacking up FLEM..... Spit like mucus. Well, I gave him some water and it seemed to sooth his coughing. Then later he started it again. So I started to think that maybe he was having hunger pukes. So I fed him. Everything was staying down and he stopped coughing for a while. So we fell asleep on the couch together so I could keep a closer eye on him. (When my babies and pups are sick, I sleep as light as a feather). Long story short, I was up and down ALL night long. Well I woke up to him coughing pretty loud, so I jumped up and brought his water bowl to him. He drank some water, and it calmed him down. I called the vet and they said bring him in immediately. I didn't even stop to think at that point..... lol.... I just grabbed his leash and ran him out the door. No wallet, no money, and still in my pajamas...... lol. I usually keep a copy of my license and I have multiple debit cards for the checking accounts in my squad car, so I didn't worry about any of that SMALL stuff..... lol. ( I so forgot that I took those out about a week ago......oops.....lol). Well I got him to the vet, and they took him back and did some x-rays. No blockage, so they did a heart worm test. No heart worms. Well the only other thing they can add it up to be is Kennel Cough. REALLY? What the fuck? He is current on all his vaccines, but they said that they can still get it. Well, the only place Krayon has been that other dogs would even POSSIBLY be at is the water park I took them to last weekend. That and feeder supply..... So, that seals the deal with ever taking them to a place like that again. Or at least until he is older and has a better immune system. Well, when it rains it poors..... Please keep him in your thoughts. I hope that this all clears up fast..... So now all 3 dogs are being treated to prevent them from getting it, and they can't be around each other for the next 2 weeks. So this SUCKS!!!!! |

Whew, your vet sure knows how to run up a bill! I'm surprised they didn't realize it was KC before doing all of that.
Vaccinated dogs can pick it up. The vaccine is really only good for I think 7-10 days after they receive it. I honestly don't even vaccinate for it anymore, unless I know my dogs will be somewhere they might pick it up. What are they treating it with? Usually KC clears up on its own and requires no treatment (it's a virus). The only time I've treated one for it was one of my foster pups; his got really bad and he came down with pneumonia. Cough suppressants can be helpful though. I'm sure he'll be okay. All of mine (except Sako) have had it before and come through just fine. |

They gave him an anti inflammatory, a antibiotic, and some cough medicine. The bill was $225.....lol. That was about a 1/3 of what I was prepared to pay. In the back of my mind, I was thinking BLOCKAGE!!!!! Thank god it wasn't that. I would have killed myself. I watch him like a fucking hawk since his first blockage surgery, so if he had had one, I would have come undone. That bill was almost $700.
Well I wish I would have been able to talk to someone before I went, but I didn't want to get the ENTIRE forum to say, "WE AREN'T VETS, TAKE HIM TO THE VET". Well duh......lol. So I didn't even bring it up. |

Sorry you are having a bad run of luck right now. I went and read your other thread in the Photography section about Kahlee going after Tue. Glad neither was hurt. It is still possible they can be together without high value things around. Sadly, this was not the case with my 2 females, I got Ellie when she was a pup and her and Chloe got along quite well. Then one day they were playing and it turned into a fight. It only got worse after that and I had to make the decision to keep them separated at all times because I didn't think it was fair to Chloe to keep getting her ass kicked by Ellie. The last altercation between the two Chloe got pretty tore up, she got a few licks in on Ellie but she was really no match for the "Evil" Ellie.
I'll be sending positive vibes your way and wishing a quick recovery for Krayon! |

Didn't really read the rest of the thread, just wanted to clarify something. The vaccine does not prevent transmission or infection, it simply lessens the symptoms. A dog vaccinated against kennel cough is less likely to become severely ill, such as succumbing to pneumonia. Kennel cough can also be contracted through a bacteria (Bordetella bronchiseptica); the intranasal vaccine helps protect against the bacterial and viral agent, the injectable vaccine only protects against the viral agent (canine parainfluenza virus). Thus, in the case of kennel cough, it does not hurt to treat with an antibiotic; it is not possible nor necessary to differentiate between bacterial and viral causal agents. Basically, you treat the symptoms, and possibly the bacteria, with antibiotics and cough suppressants.
