Well, I guess since Boo has mastered the command "east" for walking on the right, it is about time for the formal heel left-side training. I know thr right side is "wrong" but I am a utilitarian minded person, and the big horses are on the left side (pulling drafts) so I always teach dogs a perfect heel on the right.

But I do plan on going through obedience with her (a formality since I, as well as many of my friends train). Just building her portfolio of "I'm a great dog!" in case of future problems. This area is starting to get a lil hostile to bully breeds.

Always in front, pulling with just the correct amount of pulling for my likings (only wanting to really drag me if dogs, cats, or rodents appear), still able to bring her to a heel position if necessary (when other walkers are on the same sidewalk path, with not enough room or unable to cross the street), even though I have to in a way, force her haha. I allow her to really just get the most out of our walks.

Andy walks in front with a loose leash. I don't see the need for him to be beside me-he'd probably be underfoot anyway- and walking behind me means I can't see what he may be doing back there.

Always on my left and close to my leg on a very short lead. I can't stand to walk with a dog that pulls me. We walk fast and she knows there's no stopping and nonsense going on when we walk.

3 dogs: I have one dog trained to walk beside me on my left, another dog trained to walk on my right, and my third dog to walk where ever I feel like putting him that day - lol. But I do prefer my dogs beside or slightly behind, it seems when they get a little ahead, they think they can start taking charge and pulling. You know, give 'em an inch and they want a mile.

Peanut walks right next to my left leg on a perfect loose leash heel. i have a hands free leash that goes over my body. i rarely touch his leash and that is usually when like a bike comes by and we have to share the sidewalk.
i stop he will stop without me saying anything he takes notice from my body language and what foot i am on what he will be doing.

if i want the dog to get a decent workout of a short walk i will walk them on a 4ft lead and let them pull. i dont mind even though some will say its bad obedience to have a dog walk in front and pull, its just that the dog shows i take them too AADR, ADBA do not score on obedience as does other registries. regularly i walk them on a 15 ft lead and they are leading the way. again i dont mind this behavior and actually like them to walk ahead of me as they will have a faster pace to there trot than if they were following me.

for all those that have there dogs heeling by there sides i think thats pretty cool. i may try to attempt this behavior on my next dog in the future just for the hell of it. i do think it looks better on a walk to have a dog heeling. that i will say.

i used to do that with Peanut but i am not big enough to let him do that he made walking miserable (plus he would rip his paws up) walking him on a heel made my life much easier http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png besides our route isn't enough to really work him i have his mill for that and swimming http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png

i dont like being pulled or dragged and if cesar walks ahead of me he will zig zag then randomly stop to look back at me super annoying since he would always trip me so its walk next to me on my right (my strongest side also)

Jojo doesn't pull at all. The only thing I don't like is having to drag him away from something that he's sniffing.

I let Veronica walk out in front on a loose lead. She likes to sniff around and I'll let her stop and sniff but if she's taking too long; I'll give her a tug and a "let's go".

If we are walking in a high traffic area with allot of people around or if I see we will be crossing paths with people I call her close to my left side...otherwise she would try to do a "walk by sniffing" of the people. I don't care that much. Amy will heel when I tell her to, and she knows the command "easy" if she starts pulling. When we start a walk she's usually so happy she's scampering ahead. Mid-walk she's usually next to me. If she knows she's done something wrong, like leash biting when she gets overexcited (when people stop to say hi) or otherwise has pissed me off, she'll slink behind me all the way at the end of the leash and give me sad eyes. Lol. I have to practically drag her home.

I don't see the point in making a dog heel 100% of the time. There's a guy in my neighborhood who does that - one dog on each side and he looks like a German field marshall or something. The dogs don't seem to be enjoying themselves.

That lady should mind her own business. There are a lot bigger dog problems out there than your dog heeling or not.

I let Sam pull me a little bit. I feel like its a nice way to add some weight to her work out lol. BUT she only pulls me when I tell her "on point".. She knows thats her cue to walk in front of me and feel free to pull some, but once I pull her back to my side she knows to stay there!... Mostly... When we're out in public, like around town, I put their 1 inch collars on and they stay on my left, usually a little behind me. But when we're out in the neighborhoods going on an actual walk, they have their 2 inch wide collars on and I encourage them to stay on the end of their leads and pull. But they know the difference between the collars and settings. And if they forget momentarily, they just need a simpe leash correction as a reminder. If we're in a crowded environment, like the festivals we have around here, I keep them on traffic leads. Because I don't trust other people to control their dogs.

Roxie heels on the left, usually behind me when she's on a collar. If I put her in a harness, she's free to pull as much as she wants, but still stays to the left and doesnt bother other ppl walking.

Depends. Most of the time she does walk beside me loose leash but I do let her get in front of me too as well. However in obedience they wanted her on the left side, but I walk her on my right side. Its easier for me, it keeps her away from being too close to the road as well. However whenever we encounter a bike or another dog or person, she is walks beside me (Not loose leash or she sits and waits for them to pass)
