Default My 18 year old daughter is allergic to Sadie's saliva
This has been on going for the past few weeks, getting worse as the weeks go on. My daughter Taylor is not allergic to Kuruk's, Gus', or any other dog she is around, only Sadie. If Sadie drools on her or licks her she gets hives within one second. Her skin gets red and inflamed. She also is getting itchy eyes and runny stuffy nose. I have bathed Sadie. It seems to be just her saliva. We are trying to teach her not to lick Taylor, but Sadie is one lovey, kissing dog. Taylor takes allergy meds (zyrtec/ claritin) daily, but it isn't helping.
Any suggestions?

I'd keep working on a "no lick" command.. I know several dogs who have successfully learned it. Maybe your daughter will outgrow her allergy?

That happened to me when I got my new pup about 2 months after acquiring him. So far, my brother, myself and my cousin all are allergic to his saliva, he is the only dog we all know that causes us to itch and break out and hives. At first I was scared and wasn't sure what to do. But as long as the dog doesn't lick it is manageable. Annoying yes but what can you do!? If its just saliva she is allergic too then it can be avoided pretty successfully.

Rehome the kid? I mean, she is 18 and all

But, seriously, just keep working on teaching Sadie not to lick. It may take some time, but if you are consistent you should be able to teach her.

no doubt! Time to go lol. I left home and was on my own when I was 15!
Seriously though. If its saliva that's the issue, dont let her lick!

Pfff. I'm 20, 21 in July and I'm still at home.

How I wish I could move out.

I hope you can teach Sadie to stop licking!

Out of curiosity, what is Sadie eating? Does your daughter have any food allergies?

But I agree with others, don't allow her to lick your daughter.

A dog's saliva contains proteins that your body detects as a threat and reacts. The reaction is similar to one of the inflammation and the rash is one of the symptoms. The dog's saliva can be transferred to the dogs hair as well.

@3babies
You really should take her to the doctor an they may have some allergy shots that help with the issue.

Thanks Everyone. I won't re-home my daughter or dog... haha! We just have to teach Sadie not to lick. It is hard, since Sadie is a very kissy, lovey dovey dog. It is really strange that it is only Sadie's saliva. Taylor is around 6+ dogs 5 days a week and has no issues, but as soon a Sadie licks once or a drop of drool lands on Taylor, she just breaks out in hives, itchy eyes, stuffy nose...

Sadie eats the same food as my other dogs, so I don't see that as an issue.

I will bring it up with Taylor's doctor, although I don't know what can be done since it is only one dog, not all dogs.

I did a google search and found a few people this has happened to. All of them say just to teach the dog not to lick and bathe the dog often if it licks itself

I am dog specific allergic. My crazy dog friend has 22 dogs, and 3 of them break me out. I cannot even play with the whole herd of frenchies because they drool all over each other when they play and I am a mess when I leave! We believe it is genetics and a protein in their saliva because the 3 that I react to are related. They are Frenchies. On a bit of a weird note here... the mother has a strange smell, and the daughter and related female have the faint smell too. She smells like grapes. I don't even know her real name because we called her grapehead. Have you seen the "grapple" grape/apples in the grocery? that is exactly what these 3 smell like. and I am allergic to them.

Benedryl before I go to her house is a must! also long sleeves and lots of hand washing. I bring spare clothes to change into when I leave because of the itchies. None of her other dogs bother me if they have been bathed to remove the slobber remnants of the 3. Good news (??) is that one of them has passed, and the other 2 are getting pretty old. lol

I actually have the same thing with our newest rescue, Axle - I am allergic to his saliva and not to the saliva of my other 2 dogs. I get itchy hives as soon as he licks me, and of course he is the kissiest dog of the three! But there's no way I'm rehoming him. No way, I am way too attached. I am just trying to teach him not to lick. My other dogs have learned not to, so am still working on this new guy (we've only had him for a couple months now). I am also hoping that maybe it will get better as time goes on and I keep him on the good high-quality food he is on now, maybe it will get better? I don't know, but I will live with it. I just have to wash my hands after he licks me (or wherever he licks).

The food didn't matter. She feeds super premium foods, and at one time she was feeding raw.

Funny cuz my neighbour is claiming the same thing with her dog, AND the dogs name is Sadie as well! She doesn't react to her other dog...or any other that she knows of.

Maybe it's just dogs named Sadie?

Wow, I guess this is more common than I thought. I was thinking my daughter must be a bit strange... cause I never heard of something like being allergic to 1 dog, but not others. I just assumed if a person had an allergy to dogs, it would be all dogs. If I didn't see it for myself, I wouldn't believe that one drop of a specific dogs saliva could cause hives so quickly.
I am hoping Taylor will outgrow this, but we will still train Sadie not to lick. She is a smart dog, but I have a feeling this will be the hardest thing to teach her. She is just so darn loving.

Aw I love my Sadie. Sadie means princess, and that she is. I think it might have more to do with what she is mixed with. She has about 25% cur in her. What kind of cur, I have no idea... Whatever it is in the "Sadie's of the world" that causes this... we still love them.
