Do they exist? Tinkerbell was a very high energy dog and we've learned that we would like a dog that was a lot more mellow. Do they exist or am I deluding myself? Maybe this isn't the right breed for us even though I've fallen in love with them.

They exist, but it's the exception, not the rule. Typically they, like most terrier types, are high energy

I see. So then, an average pitbull needs how much exercise? I know I'm a total noob, but I've got nothing to compare Tinkerbell to, so I'm just wondering.

Depends on the individual dog, IMO. My adult dogs usually had hard fast walks for at least an hour or two twice a day with long treks thrown in several times a week at random intervals interspersed with swims in the summer (always lived close enough to water for this). Indoor exercise was usually rolling balls about and games of tug or "find it"

If you're looking for a lower energy bull breed, I'd suggest getting an older foster whose temperament and energy level is more or less already known.

We walk our dog as we ride bikes for 4 miles or more about every other day. He also gets spring pole play for 30 minutes and flirt pole excercise for 15 minutes at a time. I am a firm believer that a happy and healthy dog is a well-excercised dog.

If you want the "pit bull" look without the pit bull DRIVE, then look at the Classic Am Bullies. Not the ones that remind you of Hornswoggel, or a Hobbit, but the classic style like mine or Pinks.

I can't speak for Pink's dogs, but when it comes to energy levels, Krayon is as laid back as they come. If it weren't for Kahlee he would be a lazy bum for sure. I still walk him about once a day for about a mile. He doesn't even care to do that. He doesn't run around the house acting crazy either.

Just be careful where you get a Am Bully pup. A lot of bad breeders out there. But if I were you, looking for a SINGLE dog family with LOW drive, then I would recommend hanging out with a couple of Bully style dogs at the Rescue center. Most dogs with HIGH energy will show that from the very second you walk in until the second you walk out. One that is low energy will eventually calm down and just hang out with you. Glad that someone is there to just pay attention to them.

It's worth a shot. Never know, you might find your new best friend at a rescue.

Well I had that same question a lil while back and I have learned a tired Pit Bull is a great Pit Bull, wear his butt out and he will be fine. We made a flirt pole and that really burns energy when we don't have time for a long walk.

The flirt poles are extremely effective when you are short on space and time.

That would be my suggestion also.

i second classic am bully. your chances of finding a LOW energy dog in this breed, is slim to none. medium, yeah, but again..

Please don't think that all Am Bullies are low energy dogs. There are a bunch that are as driven as an apbt. They can be high energy dogs and to also not be taken lightly. Dog aggression and other attributes of the Apbt are still in this young Breed of dog.

I'm also going with _unoriginal's suggestion. If you get an adult from a home environment (foster, breeder, whatever), you will have a good idea of energy level and I'm sure you can find one that's in a home with young children too. The biggest thing is making sure that you trust whoever you are taking the dog from regarding their assessment regardless of if they are a foster, rescue or breeder.

I agree with those who said go the rescue route. Find yourself a slightly older dog where the energy level is known as well as temperment. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png

Thanks for all of your suggestions. In doing my research I've found that it's suggested that getting an older dog, (2 or older) is preferable when you have a home with children and another dog. I already knew we wouldn't be getting another puppy as it was super hard work the first time around and it led to heartbreak. That being said, if I ever were to get another puppy it wouldn't be from a backyard breeder, that's for sure.

Come to my house, they exist. Wilson & Piper would sleep all day if I let them. Sako is more active, but he's happy to sleep most of the day too if we aren't doing anything.

Lucy is... "selective" energy. She'll sit her lazy ass on the couch napping all day until you're in the mood to do something with her. But man, once you put a leash on her or take her out in the yard you'd think she got into a big old bag of coke.
