i just want to see what the census of this community here is about with the breed.
1) what is the take on the APBT being in or at dog parks? 2) in the front yard do you let your well behaved APBT run loose free at will? 3) we all love our APBTs and love to see them play with kids/adults do you let them play with strangers? FYI im against all of these things and just dont do them at all. just wondering what people on this board do themselves with the breed. thanks. |

you should check out the stickies at the top of the page.
The general consensus is that an APBT should NEVER be at a dog park or off a leash in a front yard. Even in a fenced yard the dog should be supervised at all times. Not sure about the third one but I like Amy Dog interact with strangers, but I monitor it closely to make sure she's not getting too hyper. She'll decide she MUST like the person's face and jump and I don't allow it. |

No to all three.
As for the playful stranger Q: I don't trust people. I do not trust strangers. If I'm walking some where and some ok person (I'm getting good vibes) wants to say hi to my dog fine. But not any "playing". Remember a while back where a dobie ether smacked or bit a person in the face? What if your dog got happy and "hurt" a stranger? Nope... |

1) I wouldn't take Romeo. He's not DA but I just don't like it. For other people, if they think they can trust their dog that's fine as long as they're prepared for the consequences if something bad should happen.2) I live in an apartment building so I don't have a front yard but even when I'm visiting family I don't allow it. I don't trust Romeo not to run into the road after a small animal.3) Depending on the setting and if they ask I may allow them to pet him but not always. There is no one answer for EVERY dog. I think it just depends on the dog and the owner.

I don't own a Bull Breed but the answers would be the same if I did.
1) No, I would not. 2) That depends. I would and I do with my Kelpie x, when I pop out the front. I would with the other but he's bad off leash. Only if I'm out there, she isn't allowed out by herself. If I lived in a apartment or next to a busy road, I wouldn't. 3) That depends (One of my dog loves strangers while the other dislikes people) as long as my dog likes people and I'm in a public place. |

1. No dog parks, ever. I don't like them and APBTs should never be in them period.
2. We live in a rural area, so luckily I can take my dog out to play in nearby fields without interferance with other dogs or people. In areas where there are homes, she is always on a leash. 3. I want my dog to be social and be friendly with people, so if a stranger asks to pet her I encourage it. She is an extremely friendly dog, especially with children so positive interactions is important both for my dog, and for the breed in general. If someone were to try to pet her without permission, I will politely say that not all dogs are so friendly, and it's always better to ask first. ![]() |

I carry a few large milk bones with me on my walks and if someone wants to pet Amy I'll ask them to give her a command and then the bone. Kids especially. One, because I want to make sure that all her interactions with kids are positive. Two, because she gets so overwhelmed with excitement sometimes she'll start biting the leash to play tug and get too hyper. The treat gives her something to focus on other than how awesome it is that people are petting her.

1) what is the take on the APBT being in or at dog parks?
Don't like them for any breed of dog. 2) in the front yard do you let your well behaved APBT run loose free at will? Yes. Hades is off leash in our unfenced front yard. It's technically illegal as we have BSL in our province but we live in a rural town. Hades is more then well behaved IMO, due to BSL he has never been able to show in obedience (must be muzzled and on leash in public property), but is trained to complete all exercises to utility level, has been able to do them for many years and has done them with my then 12 year old niece novice handler. The dog is as rock steady as they get. 3) we all love our APBTs and love to see them play with kids/adults do you let them play with strangers? I personally do not. More or less because when I'm out with my dog I'm usually doing something with him. Most likely training, hardcore disc dog sessions (yes we time him! lol), ball/tug, tracking etc. When it's work time, Hades doesn't bother with other dogs or people and I don't like to either. |

Dog parks would be fine if not for the other dog owners.
It depends on what your front yard is like. Generally off leash as much as possible. Absolutely. I encourge her to interact and socialize whenever the situation presents itself. I do not teach her apprehension towards people nor does she need anymore [arbitrary] human behaviour regulation repressing her. |

Dog parks are bad for all breeds, not just bulldogs.
Where I live, houses are too close together for off-leash, no fence wandering. When I get a house in the middle of nowhere, it'll be fine, provided the dog has solid 100% recall. I don't let random people pet my dog because frankly, I don't trust them. I have a sometimes fearful dog and I've had "professionals" approach him in ways that made him extremely nervous. I had a vet that he'd never met walk up to him and grab his head. Not good and I just can't trust the GP if I can't even trust a "dog professional". |

#1: No dog parks for me because of the filth, disease, worms and idiot dog owners there.
#2: Slam me here, but I live in an extremely rural area and take my dog out to potty. I am not allowed to look at her while she poops, so she runs behind a tree. lol She has a really good recall that I reinforce every few minutes by calling her to me and giving her some deer jerky tidbits. #3: while on leash, I may let a select few people visit her, and also let them give her a treat. But only as long as she is behaving and the people seem nice. Boo has made a fantastic friend at the lake who can somehow convince my rather unsure dog that life is grand and a fun adventure. He is a rather ruff looking old bearded man who insists she is a "game dog" and being that this IS Kentucky... I am kind of scared to ask what his old game dogs did. lol |

#1 No. I've never been to a dog park in my life and even if I had a super dog friendly dog of a different breed I wouldn't go. Too many uncontrolled variables.
#2 No. Our back yard is fenced for running and playing. We have a fenced side area accessed directly from the house for pottying. The only time we use the front yard is to go for a walk or a ride so we are always on leash. #3 Playing no. Interacting yes. Veronica is a social butterly and she bats her eyelashes and she's damn cute. Apparently I am not the only one who thinks so because she reels people in like fish on a hook; so if they ask I let her say hello which involves Veronica getting scratches and giving licks. She usually "signs a few autographs" everytime we leave the house. |

1) NO! Dog parks are full of rude dogs, oblivious/clueless owners, and are breeding grounds for disease and parasites.
2) I never let my dogs off leash unless they are n a securely fenced area. Ever. 3) I do let my dogs greet strangers if the stranger is friendly and asks to pet the dogs. I keep them near me and make sure there is no jumping up while being petted. |

I don't have an APBT, but I think this should apply to all breeds! People should be responsible no matter what they own!
1) No dog belongs in a dog park IMO. 2) Is it properly fenced? No dog should run loose unless its a securely fenced area. And the dog must be supervised at all times. 3) My dogs are very social and like to say hello. However they don't really "play" with strangers. With the weird shit people do, I would not feel comfortable letting my dog play with strangers. What if that person hurts my dog or messes up my training? |
