Wow, i'm so sorry you had to go through all that! I'm glad she's better now though, and hopefully on the way to being recovered.

Our humane society here is FANTASTIC. They have a low cost clinic, that you can use for EVERYTHING, not just s/n, and also offer free s/n for pitbulls. We've used them for all three of our animals (two dogs, 1 cat, all female) and have never had an issue at all, they've actually been better than some vets we've visited in the area. (barring the one we use now, who I absolutely LOVE) lol

Just like not all vets' offices are created equal, neither are humane societies and clinics. Doesn't mean they're all bad/good though.

Sorry for your experience! Is this a dog you had an took to the HS for a spay? Or a dog you were getting from the HS? I would never take my dog for any free or reduced price kind of surgery! Especially those that promote a cheaper or free price for PBs. Their only intention, imo, is to get rid or reduce PB's....

Dental work I have known about from my mom looking into her dog and working at an AH a long time ago, you are looking at around $400... Just my experience. Give her good food and bones and that should take care of it, imho!
I adopted her from there a month ago, its included in their adoption fee so I figured why not. I don't even know if dental cleaning is worth it, I may try some safe products that I find on google and see where I get there . I am gonna call my vet for a price on Monday and see what happens from there .
You know I almost took Sasha to one of those HS mobile spay clinics because it was included in the adoption fee and recommended by the rescue. (She was too young to be spayed when we adopted her). Anyway I got there and it was very unorganized. Basically they made you sign a waver saying that they were no responsible for anything that happened to the dog. They would not let you even speak to the vet beforehand. They did not bloodwork or anything. There was a guy with a french bulldog who was getting upset because he knew the risks involved and I was standing right behind him. And they said "We don't take an extroadinary measures, if the dog stops breathing the dog stops breathing. We don't resuscitate."

At that point they came and litterally grabbed Sasha out of my arms. I grabbed her right back and said "We've changed our mind, we are going to our vet". No way in hell was I sending her in there to potentially get butchered. I had this dog living in my home for 3 months. No wasn't going to happen.

We went on to our vet and paid the $250 and had it done. Never regretted it never looked back.

HOWEVER, about 6 months ago we got a state of the art low cost spay/neuter clinic here in town. And I wouldn't hesitate to use them if I couldn't afford to use the vet to get my dog spayed. They take all the precautions a normal vet would. But provide low cost spay and neuter to people who can't afford it. But they do the blood work, they will take extroardinary measures. And these are vets in our community that volunteer time out of their busy schedules. And some of these dogs that come in for the low cost spay/neuter are some of their actual patients. I think that makes a huge difference.

I hope Millie is doing a lot better now and so sorry you had to go through that.

She is doing great, but I cannot help but worry about her incision, does this look ok to you guys? I'm not too sure how much fluid should build up around it, or how red it should be because every dog I've had spayed has those small dissolvable stitched not these.

Wow you should take her to a real vet, just have them look at it at the front desk. Tell them you went to the HS and exactly what happened both times.
If you don't have a lot of money tell the vet that, explain that you are just wanting to know if it looks like it's healing okay or if she needs to be on any antibiotics... that incision looks like it could easily get infected.

That incision is also WAY too big in my opinion, is that how big it was originally before they had to go back in? I've had every dog I've ever owned spayed/neutered and they incisions are 1/3 that size or even smaller and NEVER X stitches.

I'm so sorry about your experience, and I agree a lot of HS's are all about numbers, BUT there are good ones and good low cost clinics if you ask around. But for intrusive surgeries I like my regular vet. Good luck and hope she heals up alright! Souds like she's doing a lot better

Default My horror story of getting Millie spayed :(. I feel like I almost lost my girl.
Yesterday made 1 month that I have had Millie. She got spayed on Thursday, came home with dried blood everywhere, not wrapped up, and completely out of it. I was terrified the second I got home as she just laid on the ground shaking with her tongue out of her mouth and was ice cold (the vet said it was because of the anesthesia wearing off). She eventually calmed down and was ok after 30 minutes or so, and she slept all evening Thursday and most of the day Friday. She hadn't eaten and had barely drank anything so that worried me but I figured she may be stressed. Today she was laying on her back and stretched out, she then started licking the area which had been the first time she had tried that, I looked at it and there was blood everywhere. I had mentioned to Ryan Friday that their was too much fluid around it but hoped it would go away on its own. It started to get really bad so I called the humane society and they said bring her in. I waited in the waiting room holding her stomach with wet paper towels for almost an hour until the vet could come out, and he said he needed to put her under again to fix it, this was at 3:30, around 7 she was ready to come home, she was whining until she heard my voice and I asked them to let me go back there and see her and she couldn't see me but she could hear me, they let her out and she crawled to my voice and I just started crying, I could tell she was in so much pain. He said she could have died, apparently she lost alot of blood and the stitches had burst because of the fluid, he said her intestines were about to fall out of her stomach or something? He ended up putting 4 layer of stitches in her which need to be removed on the 23rd, she is on pain medicine and cephalexin now. I just carried her inside and put her in her bed with blankets from the dryer and she is just sitting there crying in pain. I will never ever EVER do one of those humane society spays again, I would rather pay the $250 that my vet of almost 30 years charges and know everything is ok. At least they gave her pain medicine this time and I am going to try to wrap some bandages around her later. It's hard dealing with a scare this fast after getting her considering what happened with Destiny and the way I felt when I lost her and I know this may not seem like a big deal to most but I am just happy she is ok and wanted to share. Hopefully she feels a little better and eats for me tomorrow .

WHY would you take a dog to a humane society to get anything that requires anesthesia done?

It's ALL about numbers at those places and getting things done as quickly as possible.*

Been there, seen it...yes, I'm sure some are better than others but NO WAY after what I saw.
I adopted her from there a month ago, its included in their adoption fee so I figured why not.
I think this is why ^^^

April- If she can't see, I would contact your vet immediately. I've never spayed a female but that doesn't sound normal at all and I would be worried to say the least.

I hope your pup is okay. She's such a pretty girl.

Well, I should re word that, I meant they didn't clean up anything after her spay, and it was from the surgery I assume. I just wish I could take her pain away, she is heating up fast though from those blankets

That sucks though. I was also commenting on the fact that she was still out of it when she got home. Wilson was like that after his neuter though (super drowsy and just shivered for hours after I got him home).. and I didn't use that clinic for Piper because of it.

I hope she feels better soon. That's not good they didn't clean her up when they were done with the surgery. Our vets always do. That may have been the problem. She has to be super sore going under and being restitched twice. Ugh. Poor thing. I am glad she is going to be ok. Please give her a kiss for me.

My dog didn't get any pain meds when she was spayed at the HS years ago.... (?) I'm mad about that now!
I don't think you should be...in 30 years and 10s of females spayed, I've never even been offered them by my vets. And the dogs demonstrated they weren't in the LEAST needed.

Poor girl!!
I know medical costs can be allot of $$$. But I stick with one vet I trust for all surgeries and dental work.
Most of my dogs were only a bit wobbly when the came home. Sorry you had such a bad scare!!

WOW! Frankie's incision is TINY, like maybe 1"-2", but then she was quite young. But still, poor girl!
Hope she's feeling better soon.
What's up with her vision?

I am SO happy, she is completely normal today, and eating like a horse. Her vision is back, this is the first time she has eaten or drank since Thursday. I do understand this was her second surgery, but the incision was the same size last time, I think what is making her feel able to move and be herself is because she actually has pain medicine now and she didn't the first time she came home. I am so happy to have my girl back to normal. I wasn't generalizing all clinics FWIW, I just know how they are here. I will keep everyone posted on how things go from here

Glad she is feeling better.... that must have been very scary for you! That incision is huge, Bella, Mollie and Zoey's incisions were half that size at least. Scary... but glad she is doing better.

I think the reason she came home why she did today was because 1) they don't give a shit because it's just a HS and 2) the doctor normally leaves at 4:30 and it was 7 when I picked her up so he just wanted to go home

Glad she is safe and warm now! I will keep everyone updated
