Default Gentle Leader is amazing!
Have any of you used the Gentle Leader headcollar to help train your dog to walk more politely on a leash?

I was able to walk Bella in a 5k today with other dogs thanks to the Gentle Leader!! She has been the most stubborn, hard-to-train leash puller, but no more!

I'm always trying to make sure B is a good example of the breed and now that she walks better and doesn't yank so much, she's actually much more proud of herself and holds her head up high! Which is amazing because she's also quite shy of people because she was abused by her first owners. (We think they beat her.)

Though, one lady told me she was "so happy" I had a muzzle on my dog for all the walkers' sakes. Sigh. She had a choke chain on a DACHSHUND. (And clearly, had never used a Gentle Leader.)

I would definitely recommend anyone having a tough time with a leash-tugger to try the leader.

Well thats nice it worked for you. I would never use it for my dog, to much risk of neck injuries using it. I will stick with my prong.

As long as you have a leash on a back up collar, they are fine. Wouldnt do it without one. Seen too many slip out of those

try the halti.. its like the general leader expect is attaches to a flat collar so the dog cant back out of the collar... I agree with pookie a prong is a much better training tool, but ive heard very good things about the halti also.

Interesting, I haven't heard of the Halti. I just tried the Leader based on good things I have heard from friends. I have it attached to her regular collar also. She's on the smaller side (only about 45 pounds full grown) and uses the medium size.

We tried using the prong collar on her and it did not work. And looked ridiculous on her because of her in-between size. We do, however, use that on our other pit (mix) and he does well with it.

I have used them... and they just annoy the crap out of me, because if your dog doesn't have it on, then it's back to pulling. Plus, the risk of neck injuries if they pull too hard. They are, to me, a crutch. Your dog learns that a thing across its' nose (that rubs the fur off, BTW), equals walk nice. Plus, sooo many people think that they are muzzles, and they usually don't ask for clarification. That puts out a bad image of your dog/ the breed.

Used it once on a friend's dog who was a crazy puller. Almost broke her neck. Threw it away on the nearest garbage can.

Yikes, it sounds like that dog *was* a crazy puller if it almost broke it's neck?! That's awful. I know all dogs are not the same, but I also did quite a bit of research before I decided to buy it. I've noticed Bella is doing better without it on, so maybe for her it is a really good thing!

As far as for people thinking it's a muzzle, faced so much breed discrimination here that someone asking about a muzzle on her is the least of my worries. I was sure to gently correct the lady.

And maybe people should no be so dumb. ;-) I mean, my dog was panting, mouth open, at the time! Haha.

I just feel that the goal of any training tool is to be a tool to get your dog to eventually heel on a loose lead. it worked in one way, I guess, b/c if we take the halti with us in a pocket, and just show it to Chansey, she will act perfectly for a while. LOL But had I not switched to the prong, then the choker, then a flat collar, she'd still be wearing a halti.

I actually want one of these really bad for Logan, I just don't know the size to get (and am waiting for my Ella's lead order of a liberty attachment to come in) I hope to get one after my baby pops out and I can take Logan to petsmart to actually figure out the size I need

Ive heard those harnesses that hook in the front are MUCH better and MUCH safer for the dog. You never know when a squirrel is going to catch your dogs attention

I avoid them, due to the high risk of neck injury. However I've seen people that have success with them

I've tried them., Rosie did okay with it. Nick just sat and and rubbed his face until he was bleeding, so I took it off and won't use it on him. I stick with their prongs. Or martingales.

So far, I've only used a flat collar on Frankie, and she's doing great with that... but she's only 5 months old.
Funny thing, we met a Caviler King Charles on a walk a couple weeks ago. Sweet little 9 month old girl. The guy had a prong on her. She did NOT need that.

I couldn't feature putting a hulti on snow. She hates muzzles enough as it is, she would hurt herself wearing one of those. I have tried the ones that hook in front and She doesn't like those either; she walks to the side too. HAHA...

So I had to teach her the old fashion way with a clicker and treats.

hey if anyone that has tried them, has them and doesn't use them wants to be super nice I want one like I said to try for Logan (he is not very reactive to animals) I would pay shipping which would probably be like 5$ and a little extra, as long as its cheaper than in the store

So? I love when I see training devices on little dogs, every little dog pulls their owners around like crazy which is horrible for their necks.

We tried using the prong collar on her and it did not work. And looked ridiculous on her because of her in-between size. We do, however, use that on our other pit (mix) and he does well with it.

Ali, we live in a fairly small town with not many options for prong collars or large-breed collars for that matter.

I was only sharing my good luck with the leader and wasn't looking to be scolded for my "clearly sized wrong and used wrong" collar and decision against it.

I buy my collars online, it's cheaper that way.. Works wonders if you live in a small town with not much in the way of dog shops.
