Default Need help (kennel)
Hey guys. I am heading overseas with Sedna and the weight limit of her + kennel has to be 70.4 lbs maximum.

The current monstrosity that I have weighs in at a whopping 24 lbs.

I Need to get her down to 70lbs (her plus kennel) before we leave at the end of FEB.

She is currently pushing 60lbs but I could probably get her down to 56 or so before we go.

So my question is: Does anyone here know of a super lightweight kennel we can buy - one that will fit her and be 15lbs MAX? I don't really mind if it is expensive, because our alternative is to fly her as live cargo which will cost almost 1500. So even if the kennel is $500 bucks I'm saving a grand. Does NASA make kennels?

Thanks for any help.

a regular air travel crate shouldnt weigh that much. if you want to get the dog down in weight, i suggest you do a light condition regimine.

I thought for sure it was only about 10 lbs, which would have been no sweat. But I weighed it today at the vet and it said 24 lbs.

http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...ductId=3195394

this is the piece of shit in question.

Ok. What is the brand name?

It can't be a wire kennel, it has to be hard sided and leak proof. I found this one:
http://www.suncast.com/productdispla...?id=451&pid=97

It looks like it might be alright. Does anyone have any experience with this particular brand of kennel?

Thanks.

This is not quite 15 lbs but it is the closest I have found so far. 18 or 19 lbs depending on the size your dog would need.

What are the dimensions you would need? You also need to make sure the kennel is airline approved.
Pet Crates Direct precision cargo airline approved dog kennel

These seem to be a little lighter for their size.

Thanks. 16lbs is not bad. The Walmart one is a little lighter, but I am concered it will fall apart on the plane.

Anyone else know of anything?

They are not airline approved so he can't use those.

Yea they are no good for the plane...

What a niche market no one has broken into. I'm sure they are lots of people who would love an ultra-lightweight kennel. And dog owners are usually willing to shell out the cash for it.

How about this one?
Amazon.com: Petmate Vari Kennel, Small, Bleached Linen: Pet Supplies

Product Details

Size: Large
  • Product Dimensions: 36 x 25 x 27 inches ; 9.5 pounds

Some of the reviews said the back vents are not there. So not sure this would work unless you drilled your own holes.

You could potentially be my favourite poster....

Although it seems to me I've seen this one before but listed at a higher weight. But maybe that was the shipping weight.....

Thanks a million, I will explore father and update...

I keep getting conflicting weights for the Vari kennel on all kinds of sites and the Petmate site doesn't list the weights of the kennels and they don't have a number to call just an e-mail form to fill out or snail mail address.

What are your dogs measurements? height and length? It might help narrow the search results.

This one (36'' model) seems promising. The size below it (32'') is only 8 lbs. Unfortunately, nowhere in the world sells it and the company site doesn't list it's weight. I e-mailed them but got no response as of yet.

---------- Post added at 05:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:21 PM ----------

Size below also says for dogs up to 50 lbs. How bad would it be to put a 55lb dog in there?

Tried to find that 32" penthouse. no luck. Have you checked with the airline? Some sell kennels for air travel. Otherwise I'm googled out, sorry couldn't help. There are a few that kept coming up rated for international travel but I couldn't get a definitive weight on them. Petmate Vari, Kennel Aire and Marchioro. Some kennels that have the plastic fasteners can be modified using nuts and bolts from the hardware store to comply with airline regulations. I can't believe there isn't a site that lists kennels actual weights especially now with all the airline weight limits on stuff.

Have you considered having her shipped? I came across this site, If it's an option for your circumstances glanced at the prices and I think the international for 1 dog is 850.

Seriously though, it's fucked. You are the greatest human being for all your help. I will definitely try the Airline, I never thought of that =p. Thanks again for all your help. I will update when whatever happens, happens.

That pet relocation service is 850 from US and doesn't include airfare. I am in Canada so tack on another couple of hundred and I am losing money again.

I am starting a ultra-lite kennel company made from fucking carbon rods. XL kennel which is 3lbs and can double as a bomb shelter.
