Riding in cars

Decided to take Luna with me while I went to run some errands, and I startd wondering is there a certain way to contain them beside puttin them in a crate while in the car? I tied a knot in her leash and took the seat bel behind the seat and hook it from the back through the knot in the leash.... Is that an ok way to do it?? Took some cute pics too just while we were waiting in the car lol

I agree! That is a precious baby!

She is really cute!

IMO it is safest to have the dog crated in the back. Otherwise get a restraint harness setup and have her in the backseat. I personally am not a fan of dogs up front, too big a distraction to the driver.

Mine just ride loose in the back since I have a small car with two big dogs and a small foster dog, can't really use restraints with that many dogs, oh boy that would be a fubar! My requirement for next car is that it be big enough to hold all the kennels I'll need.

Cute puppy http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/biggrin.png I sometimes use Zoey's specified dog seat belt lead that snaps into the seat belt holder itself. There is also a harness that came along with it, but it no longer fits her properly (I purchased it when she was quiet fat). Zoey is always riding in the front seat, unless my brother is coming along. She is very and I mean very well behaved in my vehicle and never causes a distraction for me while driving. She'll bark at passing dogs if they're close enough, but that is about all. She handles my loud music and driving well ever since she was a pup.

There's actually harnesses that you can clip into the seat belts. Four Paws makes a very nice one. There's also a few on baxterboo.com

Mine ride in a dog box in the back om my pickup, or in their dog trailer. With two adults up front and a booster and a car seat in the back I think it's just more comfortable for everyone that way.

Yup. Rox is in the back in a crate. SO much easier. Buddy (RIP) was fine with the harness, but I tried that on Roxie as well and lord was that a pain.

I drive a Honda Element with the back seats removed, and a grate-style barrier behind the front seats. My Dane has a harness that's attached to the floor since his crate doesn't fit in the back.

Depending on the dog/where we're going, I utilize different methods of restraint/lack thereof.

If we're going to a competition and I'm taking all the dogs, it's a good bet some will be riding in the bed of the pickup in crates! Zealand currently rides in a crate in the back seat. Otherwise, I pile dogs loose into the back seat for just going out and about. The closest thing to a "restraint" I have is a leash tie down on the back seat so Jolene can't get into stuff if I leave her in the truck!

UvjqTVVC 01-20-2012 02:59 AM

She was very well behaved today and I wasn't goin far so I didn't wanna grab her crate, getting all tht situated prolly would have taken almost as long as it took to run an errand... I'll have to look into one of the harnesses. I drive an A6 and it's pretty spacious in the back seat I think, just with leather seats her crate wants to slide around when I put her in the back seat

UvjqTVVC 01-20-2012 03:02 AM

If were going to either of our parents house and taking her we will take the time to put the crate in the car, but when we take the mustang it's only 2 door and the backseat sucks so having a harness would make things so much more convient than trying to wedge a crate into the backseat

LOL I got a male 9 months old..put him in the car or truck he thinks he is a 44 lb squirell..Ride on top of your head ,shoulders, bounces off one side to the other, whines at the top of his lungs..We dont do any riding.

tattcasetle 01-20-2012 09:32 AM

I would just do a harness, a traffic lead and attach it to the seatbelt, that is what I do with Goren when he is going on a long trip (a crate big enough to fit him would not fit in my car put together, Logan's wont even fit)

UvjqTVVC 01-20-2012 11:08 AM

Thank u all Weres a good place to buy one of these harnesses?? Would it be cheaper online or in store taking into consideration good quality also

After having my Boxer, Dixie, break the windshield of my car during a panic stop, and knock herself silly, I never transport the dogs loose in the car any more. They ALWAYS ride in their crates now which fit nicely in the back of a Honda Element. In fact, we purchased the Element just to haul dogs and it's just about perfect.

Short story: Following a friend home from a show and he had a blow out and his SUV rolled several times on the Florida turnpike. He had four dogs, all crated, in his SUV at the time and none were injured. He had his belt on and was only slightly injured. He's a very lucky guy.

Moral? Don't transport your dogs loose in the car.

If she is small enough to crate, that is the best idea.

My dog's crate will not fit inside our truck, so we got the restraint.

We got a great harness and an adjustable leader that clips right into the seat belt. So easy to use too!

valiumcheepval 01-21-2012 10:27 PM

Bear has been riding in the truck with me since 4 weeks old, once her got her size, he was removed from the lap and learned how to use the back seat! lol
I never used a crate in truck because there wasnt any small enough to fit in the back seat.

I want to get him a harness restraint but he has it down pretty good and keeps growing so maybe once he is done growing he will get one. I will wrap his leash around the center console thing in the back seat so he is held in the middle and cant walk around but thats only sometimes, normally he is just loose in the back and he lays down with his head between the front seats, he learned its the safest and he wont fly around all crazy if we have to slam on the brakes or whatever.

tattcasetle 01-22-2012 05:32 AM

you can get a car harness at petsmart, I use a stillwater walking harness (my boy is allergic to nylon so yea, can't use the normal stuff with him) and a leather 1 foot traffic lead from Ella's leads

Daleman1984 01-22-2012 01:56 PM

I usually have Cleo in the back seat or in the wagon part of my Highlander. My probably is getting her in the car! She likes to ride but I can't seem to get her to jump in. So I resort to picking her up (all 50 lbs). How do you teach them to jump in? I've tried coaxing her with snacks, toys, you name it.
