Default Officially a woman!
Chevelle started her first heat today. It's gross, it WAS everywhere, but now she has on her very degrading diaper. Lol! So, my question is, do I get her spayed now? My vet scared me by saying that she may get hormonal after her spay and get fat.

Then change vets cause that's wrong.
Get hormonal? whaaa?
And dogs only get fat if they take in more calories then they burn off, just like people. Unless there is a underlying health problem...
maybe you didn't to your vet close enough... or correctly...

Nope, she said that her hormones might go out of whack and cause her to gain weight. She's the second person I heard that from. The first was a man who had a female pit bill and she was huge but not like, fat huge, but more like round and hard...it's hard to explain. He said it was because of her hormones after her spay. Really confused me. Lol. So I asked the vet when I saw her and she said its true, so idk. Haha.

I really wouldn't worry about it. I think you should just get her spayed when you're ready.

I'd spay whenever you're ready, like Tahlz said. My female did not change in demeanor nor physically after her spay. I honestly wouldn't worry too much about that.

When they spay a dog they're taking away the hormones basically, so she will not become moody. My dog was lean and underweight when I got her and she's spayed, it will not make a dog fat. Just keep her exercise up, and intake of food at maintenance level. Dogs get fat because people over feed and under exercise.

like ember said.

there are 2 spayed female dogs in my family. one i pretty much take care of she just turned 7 today and was spayed at 4 months old and she is in pretty good shape and she is far from fat. my grandparents have a spayed female that was done around 7-9 months i can't remember when but she is fed garbage and she gets yelled at when she runs because my grandparents have zero patiences and really are not the people for a dog and she is obese.

it is up to you when you want to spay your dog no one can tell you what is best for your dog. however i do not beleive your vet is correct or the man you talked to it is how you feed the dog and how you exercise the dog as to how the dog will be physcially (and healthy) wether you spay or not.

Okay, I am probably going to make her an appointment then, I am just a little worried because this is a huge decision.

well if you are worried get the opinion of several different veterinarians do some research on the internet and go with what you learn and make your decision.

it is a big decision and permanent. there are pros and cons.

I've spayed several and only had one change as far as weight gain. She does have a tendency to put on weight easier now than before but it's not a big deal. I just keep an extra eye on her and make sure she stays where she needs to be. Little less food, little more running and no problems.

I can say with 100% certainty that spaying will not change the dogs body type. Slayer is just as lanky as she has always been and was spayed at 5 months.

Also, if it makes you feel any better there is nothing to be scared of. Just make sure you read all the papers they give you and keep her from getting over hyper for a week or so.

Its insanely obvious if it is normal looking...the skin on the belly is so white that if it becomes red or inflamed you should notice it. However, your vet may or may not give you a cone..if he/she doesn't make sure the dog DOES NOT lick at or bite at the incision. Most use the dissolving stitches.

Oh, I made sure last visit that she would give me a well fitting cone. I'm a bit spay traumatized...when I was a kid we found my friends cat in his bathroom and she had ripped her spay stitches out and her guts were everywhere.

Psh, I'd love it if Piper could gain weight easier! Definitely not, and she was spayed at 6 months (before her first heat).

You're going to want to wait til after she's done with her heat to spay her btw; most vets charge more to spay if they're in heat.

Yeech! Who wants to read about that first thing in the morning. Next thing you know you'll post when your "boyfriend" gets his too!!

The hormones will be gone and she very well can gain weight due to the spay but you'll have to excercise her to keep her thin. Also read the pros and cons sticky before making the final decision as spaying has some positive and detrimental effects on the bitch.

I was also rather worried about Trigger getting nuetered, though it's less involved then the female surgery. Everyone was telling me also he was going to get fat and out of shape. It hasn't changed him one bit (not his personality either) , and I maintain his excercise and keep human food away from him.

....but we appreciate it, CK, as we can look forward to some more gorgeous puppy pics!

Good post! Read up on the info and what to look out for.... mine did fine with everything except the "staying still" for a week. There was no way to keep Zoey still for one minute. That dog came home like nothing had ever happened to her. I basically just kept her crated 24/7 except a brief potty break a few times a day. She was my difficult one because I couldn't keep her still.

Good post... I sometimes tend to forget that they charge extra if you have a dog in heat. I had everyone spayed before their first heat except Zoey, and that was just because I couldn't get it scheduled and crazy work hours with overtime. She managed to come in heat one time, I made an appmt for the next week! I didn't have any intact dogs at my house, but I was terrified that one of the loose roaming dogs down the road would somehow get to her. I was a basket case filled with worry until I could get her in!
