Default The APBT vs The SBT
I know they are two different breeds so its like comparing apples to oranges but I'm torn. I am convinced that a well bred SBT would be the perfect dog for us. However there have been more and more APBTs (Some papered) and pit bull type mixes being surrendered to the shelter. Not a surprise since we border 2 counties that now have BSL. So I am kind of torn on the issue. I almost feel obligated to adopt. But at the same time the selfish part of me wants my purebred well bred SBT.

So help me sort through this please.

List some pros and cons of Adopting an APBT (or APBT mix) vs Buying a purebred SBT from a breeder.

---------- Post added at 01:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:42 PM ----------

I'm still thinking there are more pros to buying an SBT. But being around the shelter, makes it hard to go buy one when there are some good dogs just sitting there waiting to be loved. It totally sucks. Maybe I need to stop hanging around the shelter. I'm wanting a well bred puppy to raise. Most of the adoptable dogs are adults. But its so hard to turn my back on a dog in need. Obviously this is more of a me thing than the actual dogs. I'll work through it. I probably should stick with my plan and get my SBT and not let a few sad big eyed dogs sway me. I've been planning on an SBT for about 2 years now. Probably should stick to my plans.

A good dog is where you find it. Keep your options open. Keep an eye open for both a well bred SBT and the shelter dog that steals your heart and jumps up and just "smacks ya" of take me home. Do that and the right one will come along, where ever it may be.

That's really good advice, thanks.

you would have a hard time finding an APBT to adopt... unless you mean what the public calls "pit bulls" in which case I would go with SBT. You never know what kind of health problems a "pit bull" would come with because they're often frivolously bred for many generations.

I agree with Joe yet again. If you're not getting the dog you want you're not doing yourself or the dog any justice. Whatever dog you wind up with will be with you for years and you don't want to be looking at it wishing you had gotten something else. I wouldn't stop hanging around the shelter, the right dog might walk in one day. If you're ready for a dog I'd go ahead and look for your SBT, but if THE ONE shows up at the shelter you'll still be there to see it.

It's not selfish of you for wanting pure bred dog.

I agree with Joe.

I agree with joe.

Not all "pit bulls" turn out bad. Chevelle is a pit bull mutt and she's gorgeous, healthy, and has a wonderful temperament.

I would go with the SBT, it's clear you want one. You will rescue again one day. It doesn't hurt to buy from a breeder.

I've had three dogs total in my life, sadly two came from BYBs and one from a pet shop and when I get my next dog, it will be a SBT and from a responsible breeder. I feel bad not adopting but I will adopt after the SBT.

You have to live with this dog for the next few long years, get what you want.

You know at the end of the day it comes down to I want a event tempered healthy dog. Which I could get at a shelter or from a breeder. (Better shot from a good breeder). We are moving out of an apartment at the end of the summer and my husband and I have been talking about adding another dog to our home assuming we are financially ready to take on another dog. But he wants to wait atleast 6 months after we get moved and settled. Obviously we could be on a waiting list for a dog from a good breeder for years, which is cool. As long as the end result is I get my dog. Or I fall in love with a dog at the shelter, which as often as I am down there could happen. I had an instant connection with Sasha, I just knew she was meant to be my dog. And we have been great pals. I'll be lost without her one day. But I'm not sure I'm ready to rescue again. I kind of know what I am looking for in a dog now and the SBT is the whole package. lol. I think I'm going to keep my options open, and continue to focus on finding a good SBT. But if there is a dog out there that needs me, I won't necessarily turn my back on it. I shouldn't close either door.

Just the closer we get, the more I think about it.

You want to help a shelter dog and I totally understand that, but you also want a SBT of your very own. See if you can find a SBT to rescue and if not, don't compromise your desire!! Besides, you still rent. If you get a SBT you'll have an easier time renting due to size if nothing else

Yeah I won't be getting any dog until we move this fall. The whole renting with a dog thing, not fun. Assuming things work out like we hope and we don't have to into another rental for a few months. If we do rent again, definitely a private landlord.

Get one from good stock, not the little frogs with the round bodies that pass for show dogs these days. Look at my avatar.
