I paid $350 to have a dog pts in Iowa. It can def. get pricey when you go to an actual Vet clinic. Tell him to find a low cost clinic or shelter/humane society that will do it. And tell him NOT to tell people why unless he is asked because that's how stories get around the local media "Dog put down for attacking owner after dog fight" ....real nice stuff. If the law is "this dog has not bitten anyone in 10 days" then tell him to wait 10 days. But he should get a rabies shot if there's a remote possibility that's what it was. However you said the dog had a history of showing aggression that were dismissed.

Sorry to hear that he has to do this though :/ better he do it sooner than later before he changes his mind and something worse happens.

I know it sounds horrible but I would go to a secluded area and shoot the dog myself. Raised in the country, this is how a lot of people I knew growing up put their dogs down. The dog gets to go for a ride to a new place, and take a fun walk... then you get to say your goodbyes in privacy... no vet questions and no stress of the vet on the dog.

Just a suggestion.

I actually agree with Cliff, my uncle always culled his own litters and put down his own dogs. If he doesn't have tHe heart to do it himself have someone do it for him and then return the body if he wants to bury or burn it.

This.

It's how it was done growing up at my house.

I'd just call around, tell vets I have a dog that is human aggressive and I want to pts. No need to go into details about it. Around here they charge $68 and up on average. Fees depend on the disposal of the body. If the vet does disposal it will cost more than if the owner chooses to bury the body themselves.

If he can't manage to get a vet to handle it he could try calling AC and asking them if they will put down an aggressive dog free/low cost. I know my city will put a dog down after a bite for free if the owner will release it to them.

Cliffdog you and I agree on this one,,I put my first dog down when I was about 9 yrs old.My dad explained it to me and why it had to be done,it hurts like hell still ,puttin one down doesnt ever get easy! But its part of life and has to be done at times and I also had to bury him after I shot him..But nobody will ever put one of my dogs down ..I am the only one who has that right. If the dog is HAand thats the prob ,,some people dont mind HA dogs and knows how to control them.

Call the local shelter. Mine will euthanize for $20. All you have to say is you can't keep the dog and being a bully breed most shelters won't adopt them out anyways so you would rather him be put down instead of surrendering him to the shelter.

Also a lot of humane societies and SPCA will too. I know one of the techs that came to fix my printer at word said he had to take his Dachshund to the SPCA and they euthanized and cremated him and returned the ashes for $165. Wish I had known. It was $300 at my vet for my Mom's Chihuahua.

Tjfyojlg 10-01-2012 09:01 AM

$400 is about what it would cost to get a horse euthed! When I had my cat PTS the vet only charged me $40 - for the x-rays but I did take him home so they didn't have to dispose his body.

tattcasetle 10-01-2012 09:33 AM

yea I am with cliff, if I had the heart for it I would put my dogs down this way rather than the vet. when I had my ex's dog put down it was like 65$ total so that price is crazy

Virosponna 10-01-2012 10:19 AM

Soo.. what woul dbe his reasoning for having the dog be put down?? That hes being showing aggressive behaviors for a while now and its too much now...?

Would he still need to wait those 10 days?

---------- Post added at 04:19 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:13 AM ----------

IF he didnt 'report' that he bit anyone i meant...

TheReallyBest 10-01-2012 10:20 AM

What Cliff said. I would wait the 10 days though and have it documented that the dog was, indeed quarentined for the allotted time.

If I didn't have the option (local shelter does it for $25) I would follow Cliff's advice. Personally I would give the dog to my grandmother and have her do it.

When I called the vet to meet me to put Maxx down (he was bleeding internally and dying), the vet met me at the clinic, on July 4th... not only a holiday, but also a Sunday, at 7pm to put him down. He did a quick exam of Maxx to make sure I wasn't exaggerating about him dying (he thought I was blowing things out of proportion and Maxx would be ok with meds). After he looked at him and listened to his heart, he confirmed my suspicion that he was dying, and put him down for me. I took Maxx back home with me, so he didn't have to do anything with him. Even though it was July 4th and I interrupted his dinner, he only charged me $100.00.

I took a puppy in to be put down that was dying of Parvo a few years ago. Wasn't my puppy, it belonged to a girl at work, but she wasn't going to do anything for the pup so I took it in. Vet charged me $50 to put the pup down and dispose of it.

Check around... there has got to be a vet around that will do it for a more reasonable price. $400.00 is outrageous, and I wouldn't take it to him. Granted, I would find a vet that would do it, because regardless of the reason, I couldn't do it myself.
