All those bullies are yours CK? they're all beautiful! And Poppa doesn't look at all like the "XXL GIANT HEADED PITS" I've seen advertised. He's well proportioned and physically fit! Spice really stands out to me, just gorgeous.

All of your dogs are gorgeous.

I think though that there is a line of American Bulldogs that look...pretty much like very large pit bulls.

Before we got Veronica, I was looking at American bulldogs and I saw some dogs that weren't jowly at all...which is what I was looking for because I have a thing about drool. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/redface.png

The dogs I was looking at I think were considered the standard/Scott type; whereas the picture above is the Johnson type.

The American bulldog posted looks like a Johnson type dog. Scott, or performance American bulldogs have a lot leaner look to them, with a less mastiff like head and longer muzzle. The average bulldog runs bigger than the average pit, but the performance types have an athletic look to them.

Well Poppa looks like Chance from Homeward bound, which is a Scott type American Bulldog.

And he looks damn fine and you know it!!

Just because I think a dog looks like something doesn't mean its that. I asked an honest question, Hell I even went and looked at pictures and there are some that look identical to that dog. Sorry. Honest mistake. I think it happens all the time.

I wouldn't take it as an insult since it is a nice looking dog regardless. But yell at me for making an honest mistake?

Don't know why I didn't catch this earlier, but you're wrong. Chance was a Johnson/Scott type cross.

I and many other people here are pretty good at identifying breeds. Part of the definition of a breed is that they have a characteristic appearance that separates them from any other breed. Therefore it is easy to tell an American Pit Bull Terrier from Rottweiler from a German Shepherd from a Saluki from a Staffordshire Bull Terrier from a Fox Terrier from an American Staffordshire Terrier. Each breed has unique characterisitics which make it impossible to mix it up with any other breed; and you don't need a pedigree to SEE those differences.

What are the defining characteristics of Poppa that make him an "American Bully"?

Ugh! This Bully thing can be confusing.
I came to this forum years ago because of someone telling me you could not tell the difference between APBT and all the rest of the Bully breeds/mixes. I told them they were wrong.
I've always had a love for Am bulldogs, more of the scott/painter type for sure. I don't like big floppy/sloppy flews. I love APBT's. I can tell breeds apart from other breeds like nobodies business. But when it come to the Bulldogs thing get pretty blurry to me. I tend to sit in front of the computer with a furrowed brow trying to comprehend. Most of the Bullies I like tend to look the same no matter what they are called. Big and full, but athletic and tight. After that I'm just confused. I love how Poppa looks, but that chance dog is fine too, tho a touch too lippy....
