Default Bow Wow and Meows or The Groove Hound
It's time to move to another groomer. Any feedback is greatly appreciated

Any particular area in mind?

ETA: Never mind. You wanted feedback on the groomers in your post title. I need my kid to start sleeping through the night. Or lots and lots of coffee.

I've been to Bow Wow Meow but not the groove hound.

I took my dogs to about 4 or 5 different groomers when they were little, one was Bow Wow Meow.

One groomer salon allowed smoking and the dogs came home smelling of cigarettes. One groomer, when I arrived to pick them up they brought me a different dog and handed her to me. I said.. um i have two dogs and neither of them is that one. I could have walked out of the store, when i finally got my dogs one of them was cut. Another one of the dogs after a different groomer came home and all of a sudden was afraid of grooming. None of the above were Bow Wow Meow.

Bow Wow Meow was ok, not great but ok and i would go back. I had some trouble getting appointments when i needed them. A friend of mine also took their cats there and felt the same way about it, we both now take our animals to Chez Bow Wow. On North second street. They even have a pick up service. They will pick up and drop off your furbabes. Tell them Lucy and Ethel sent you, we've been their clients for years now. Tell Gwendolyn we said arf!

I liked the job that Suds and Swagger on S. 3rd Street (between South and Bainbridge) did with my Aussie.

We have a large chocolate lab (110lbs) and live in the Fairmount neighborhood. We use Bow Wow and Meows probably once every other month or so. Our dog really likes them there and they do a good job. Don't really have any complaints. I have never had an issue getting an appointment but I usually will call a week or so in advance. The staff is always really friendly.

We have always wanted to try the self-wash place in Northern Liberties since our dog makes a mess every time we tried to wash him in the tub. Plus I am not a fan of cutting his nails.

I have used Bow Wow's for about two years now. I have an older, arthritic Siberian Husky who has difficulty standing for long periods and who has had surgery on both back knees, so he requires special care. They always review the special care instructions with me (lifting, drying, etc.) prior to me leaving and though it's still a long day for him, he always comes home in good spirits and most of all very clean.

Groovehound, hands down. My dogs have been to Chez Bow Wow and Groovehound. Groovehound is the cheapest, Gert is the friendliest and definitely cares the most about the dogs. At Chez Bow Wow, the dogs are kept in the basement in cages and my dogs always seemed agitated when I picked them up. Gert is like a dog whisperer--she rescues dogs, offers dog training, is in the process of setting up doggie daycare I hear and is just amazing with my now very arthritic 15 and 18 year old large dogs. They aren't afraid to go in like at every other groomer.

I would really never take a dog anywhere else. I recommended her to my former broker who has 3 poodles in the traditional cut and she was very, very pleased.

Um.... my experience would disagree with that. MY dogs were not kept in cages at Chez Bow Wow, whenever i've come in there dogs were running around free as a bird. I know they have crates to help but they don't just throw them in there. Actually i drop off my own crate so if they want it it's there for them. They love their crates, most (not all) dogs do. Also they have just changed to a location a few blocks away with even more space. Gwendolyn and Susan are fabulous, my dogs love them, the 12 yr old cat loves getting groomed by them - she purs through the process after the bath, and i trust them implicitly. They also help run street tails rescue, rescue cats themselves and groom all the street tails animals. I never plan on going anywhere else.

They told me my dogs were kept in crates downstairs. I never saw downstairs and my dogs aren't crated dogs--one was but freaked out after the death of his companion dog and completely freaked out after that being in one, including losing a tooth fighting his way out.

Anyway, groomers always changed there as well. I like knowing my groomer.

I'm sorry for your experience, you know, groomers do change and things can happen, no one is perfect and had i that experience I would have not returned. But I can say i have never had anything close to that. I don't know how long ago that was. My dogs aren't crated either, they just love going in it. Sometimes you have to put an animal in a crate to protect them, you can't control what dogs will do to each other.

I would have been pissed too.

Just to be clear, he didn't lose a tooth there--he did this with his former family. Gert crates the dogs too--just in plain view. And she also has just one set of dogs at a time (or one dog) so there's no issue.

I agree with Gladys about Chez Bow Wow!
I travel from deep South Philly to have my dog groomed every 6 weeks there. He is a recent rescue form July 2010, now 15 years old, deaf and toothless but he is always happy and calm when I pick him up. Although I have never taken him anywhere else, my previous elderly rescue had the misfortune of being groomed by other shops (until I found Gwendolyn) where the experience was not so great
I find all of the staff to be friendly and professional. If they do put him in a cage for a few hours I am fine with it. It probably makes him feel secure anyway and is a safer alternative than running around loose where he could get in trouble or choke on something.
I have tried other groomers and while there are many good skilled folks out there , I highly recommend Chez Bow Wow to anybody. My old guy is a small poodle and I love the fact that they cut him the way I want him to look (not the standard poodle cut). They listen to me.

I'm glad. I agree that crates are not a bad thing at all. Gwendolyn and Susan are the best. I always tell them when in doubt do whatever is best for the dog - and they do!!!! Have you been to the new location yet? how is it?

new location is nice. parking is a little tight picking up but since I am from South Philly I just double park and block people in! The front is a lot of glass and my little guy was off the leash and ran straight into the glass wall...it was so clean he thought it was open space. He didnt' hurt himself and it was kind of funny!
Dog grooming is an art and I do believe that most groomers are dedicated and work hard at their jobs. It is nice that it seems we have several options in the Philadelphia area.
