New to pits, anyone know the mix breed this might be?

Long story short, Wife and I fell in love w/ a 3yr old pit terrier mix, Shelter doesn't know the mix and our home owners won't allow this type of dog. If I can prove it's a mix and what mix it might be, they are willing to possibly allow us to get her.

Few pictures are attached. She is a small dog, currently 39lbs. She could stand to gain a few lbs, but just a small petite dog in general. She is gentle as can be, extremely mellow and calm.

Any help with the mixed portion of her would be greatly appreciated!

here is a link to the shelter ad http://www.petharbor.com/pet.asp?uaid=WPHS.A147567

A
lso are 2 pictures I took of her when we visited.

Thx so much,

Dan

She looks like a pure bred APBT or a mix. No way to know without papers on her.

If your homeowners insurance won't cover her, there are companies that will. State Farm and Farmers being two off the top of my head.

If you're talking about homeowners association, then you could try to have your vet write her up as believable mix and see if they go for it. Sympathetic vets will help you out but there really is no way to prove what she is or is not without papers.

She looks a lot like my purebred APBT pup, Renee.

We switched to Amica from American Family, who would not insure a pit bull type dog. Amica is also cheaper than AmFam for us.

Both State Farm and Farmers will cover an APBT. Honestly your dog to me looks a lot like my friends Boxer/American Pit Bull Terrier mix. Though in your case I see more APBT than anything. The dog may not be mixed. Look into State Farm and Farmers.

However if you are dealing with the Home owners association maybe see if your vet can write a letter passing the dog off as a Boxer mix. However HOA's are a pain in the butt. My uncle has 2 purebred boxers who are papered and his HOA is constantly giving him trouble about his "Pit bulls". They aren't pit bulls they are boxers. Doesn't matter to people who don't know sh*t about dogs.

Someone else mentioned possible boxer too, our homeowner policy is erie, our agent is telling us it's his underwriters that are saying no

I think your best bet is to find a new homeowners policy. I don't usually like to do this because we shouldn't have to hide these dogs. But maybe on vet records and stuff see if your vet will list the dog as a boxer mix. Might make your life a little easier. Maybe even see if the vet will provide a letter to your Homeowners insurance stating you have a boxer mix. I mean seriously come on, shelters mislabel dogs all the time. Supposedly I have Chihuhua mix living in my house. ((Rolls eyes)). I think currently our vet has her listed as a Lab/JRT mix, because that is his personal opinion on her.

I have to agree with not hiding her - that never works out well in the long run. The best way is to speak with your money and take your business elsewhere PLUS make sure your current insurance company knows exactly why you're dropping them. I did that with my car insurance when I was looking to add renter's insurance onto our policy. They didn't take bully breeds so I switched to Farmer's and have not had one problem since then.

nancywind 10-25-2011 07:35 PM

I also agree with not hiding her possible breed. When we spoke to our old insurance agent, a personal friend of my husband's, she said if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's a duck. She said she'd hate to lose our business, but if something happened and they found out about the dog, they'd deny the claim and drop us immediately. Even if we said the dog was a greyhound mix (original dog we were looking at was pit/greyhound), she said we'd still have problems because it had pit bull characteristics. Not worth it to mess around with losing homeowner's insurance just to avoid the switch.

Yup. If it's just a matter of homeowners insurance and not a Homeowners Association rule, I'd go shopping for new insurance. There are at least 3 major companies listed here that have no problem with dog breed and only deny coverage for dogs that have bitten or been deemed dangerous by the court for bad behavior.

Yeah, I went through the homeowners merry-go-round, too. What it boils down to is that if there is ever a claim filed for any reason, if you were not up front about breed they can deny your claim and you've been wasting your money on the policy. Best to find someone that is happy to have your business and cover your dog breed of choice.

You've been given great advice and I have nothing else to offer, but I just wanted to say the dog is adorable!!! http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png I hope things work out so you can get her.

Leaters 10-25-2011 08:28 PM

Agreed, you've been given great advice. She looks apbt/boxer to me too. She's pretty normal sized for an apbt, they medium sized dogs and not that large generally. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png

Yeah, she is adorable! I'd drop my insurance like a bad habit and go elsewhere for herhttp://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/hearts.gif

I know my old homeowners also doesn't descriminate-Kemper.I have state farm-no descrimination there either. I wouldn't hide the breed, just call her a staffordshire terrier mix.

Thx for the help guys! Turns out our Erie agent called back while I was at work yesterday and approved it since we've been a customer for many years. Bad news, wife and I can't make it to shelter again till Sunday. So we both agreed that if its meant to be, she'll still be there come Sunday

That's good news on the insurance. I have to commend you for being so thorough aand checking everything including insurance out before you brought the dog home. So many people don't, and then when their insurance, landlord, or whatever find out, the dog ends up back in the shelter, out on the street, on craigslist, or worse. Good luck to you guys!

Yes those were my biggest fears. I'm an avid dog lover so doing what's right and what's best is always to priority for me. Had to put my last dog down 8 months ago due to cancer and other age health related issues, bar none the single hardest thing I've ever done. Dog was my best friend. Sometimes I wonder why I'm getting another one lol but I can't help it, I think I'm always meant to own a dog.

I'm sorry for your loss. And I hope your new friend is there waiting for you when you go to the shelter this weekend!

A lot of us have had to say goodbye and know how hard it is. Yet we all still have a dog or many dogs. Gluttons for punishment! But the time together is so worth it.

I hope you can get your dog! Did the shelter already approve you? Have you thought about calling and doing as much as possible over the phone or seeing if they can put a hold on her, list her as a pending adoption so you can get her this weekend?

I'm always amazed when I hear that other shelters don't verify these things first. Again, I must be spoiled by the ones I've volunteered at - they would never let a bully breed go home with anyone without verifying housing restrictions for breed and insurance if you own your own home.

I'm glad to hear that the insurance company relented! Do make sure and get something in writing though so you'll have proof later on that they allowed the dog. I hope the shelter can work with you so you can get her adopted this weekend!

Yes shelter approval was done last sun when we met her. We already did one 48 hour hold from sun to tues and gave deposit. I did surrender our deposit as a donation once ins denied the dog. They won't allow another hold so we just have to cross our fingers. And we'll still have to pay full adoption fee which I'm ok with since I gave deposit up, but its all to help other dogs so I'm ok with it. I've always kinda lived life under " everything happens for a reason", so if we're meant to be her parents then she will still be there Sunday
