Still waiting. Now we are looking at breeders. I so want a pup from: http://stockoptionsacds.com/

I
wish we still had signatures, because I would love to change mine to this:
"Pedigree indicates what the animal should be;
conformation indicates what the animal appears to be;
but performance indicates what the animal actually is."

I also came across this vid in my searches. Love!

I haven't wanted a cattle dog, but that breeder had me wishing (more than usual) that I lived in a rural area and had an excuse to get one...

Have you tried sending the rescue an email and calling to ask what's up? If they still don't respond, I'd go to a breeder and make sure the rescue knew I passed over rescuing in favor of a breeder at least partly because of their failure to respond in a timely manner. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be the first or last to do so and they need to know that if they seriously want to place dogs in good homes.

Or you could keep looking at different rescues and on CL. I see CD's on CL here and there because someone bought one without realizing how smart they are and how much exercise and training they need.

We are looking at other rescues. I search petfinder and adopt a pet on a daily basis. This place does not have a number listed (or at least I cannot find one), so the only option is to go back and forth via email. We have invited a phone call in every email. Their site says it could take 5-7 days to receive responses to emails, so there's a possibility that we are still waiting. I will definitely let them know if we end up going to a breeder because of their decision.

The aunt and uncle have now decided they do not want the dog to be over 12 weeks. They keep tightening restrictions on what they want and then get impatient when nothing is available. I do not want them to go to a BYB. Hopefully I can push them into getting on a waiting list with S.O. (or there's another kennel that I like - Wayout ACDs) or to go with a rescue pup.

I know rescuing is a great thing, but if they are going to be really picky about what they want maybe a breeder is the best option for them. Heck, you all might even get lucky and find a breeder with a litter larger than their wait list.

Look, you tried the rescue (applause*) and it didnt work out. I suggest going with a good breeder with a good working line. Then you know you're gonna get a quality dog. You have a good bet the dog won't have hidden genetic problems and such. Suppose you did rescue some mongrel who you had to be at the vet with and couldn't do your weight pulls and such with, and ended up stupid and bad form when grown. Visit the breeder; tell him you will be doing contests and shows with him so the breeder has an interest in getting his best pup in your hands.Thats just my 2¢.

We actually contacted the above breeder, but she is looking for homes that trial in herding or that need working ranch dogs. Obviously, we are neither. Though I completely understand why she wants those things.

We have contacted other breeders. There is only one other kennel that I can find online that I like. They may have a breeding coming up, so I keep checking the site (that's what they said to do). http://www.wayoutacd.com/puppies.html

There is also a herding trial coming up in NJ at the end of December that I may try to attend. I will also be going to a flyball tourney in early December and will ask around then as I have been told a friend of a friend may know someone. In the mean time, I will keep checking petfinder. Today we actually found this girl that we have contacted the recues about: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/21287307

Default OT: ACD or Entlebucher breeder/rescue recommendations
I figured I asked here, in addition to doing my own research, since I know there are a lot of people on here that fancy other breeds as well. We lost our old dog on Tuesday so we are down to one dog, an intact male GSD. We are looking into getting a new dog sometime in the next couple of months. Because of our current resident, we are looking for a a breeder who's contract does not prevent spaying (or rescue OK with an intact dog). My aunt and uncle would be adopting/purchasing the dog and have had two ACDs. Entlebuchers are a breed we are also considering. So, here's the wishlist, so let me know if you know of any good rescues/breeders:

1) OFA/PRCD/BAER (for ACDs) testing on both sire and dame if from a breeder
2) Working dog or sporting titles (no parents with solely confirmation titles) if from a breeder
3) Willing to travel anywhere in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, New York, West Virginia, Virginia, Mass.

We currently like Annie's description, but we won't be ready until early November for a dog, so who knows if she'll be available:

Good luck! I hope you get one! Momma looks kinda like my son's dog Cheyenne, one of the best dogs I've ever known.

Thank you! We've been Cattle Dog free for 5 years, but we are suckers for punishment, and so the search began!

A woman on my flyball team has 2 entlebuchers. Not really my cup of tea, JMO.

You must be a real masochist! I'm pretty sure a Cattle Dog would make me batty. But I do admire the intelligence and energy so long as it isn't directed toward destroying my house. After all, I have precious few decent things left after raising 3 puppies over 3 years and I treasure them, lol.

Never looked into the Entlebucher. Seems like a smaller version of the BMD. Which was a breed we were interested in before we became bully addicts and got Ike and then the rest of the dogs. I even tried to adopt a Bernese mix from a rescue, but he was a man biter and yeah, no thanks. Now I'm glad I didn't find a stable one because I think I wouldn't do so well with the grooming needs. The ones I have seen are a bit shaggy and seem to like rolling in the mud a lot.

EMD and BMDs are nothing alike. EMDs are very much herding/stock dogs that are wary of strangers and need a job. I'd say they're more like GSMDs, except more neurotic. This is just from my personal experience with the two I know, so who knows if that's actually the case for the rest of the population.

Allegedly,

Temperament: As with all large, active working dogs, this breed should be well socialized early in life with other dogs and people, and be provided with regular activity and training. Temperament of individual dogs may vary, the Standard says that the breed is "Good-natured and devoted towards people familiar to him, slightly suspicious of strangers."

which is the impression I got on a BMD's temperament when I was thinking about one.

Maybe the ones you know are nutty lol.

If that's for the entlebucher, I wouldn't call them large dogs other than their attitudes. They're probably 14-16in at most in height, at least for the girls.
I'm sure if they were trained properly they'd be less fruity.

Good luck! ACD's are pretty cool, but I'm more a BC person. Granted my stepdad's ACD was certifiable (above and beyond whats normal for them!), so I haven't had the best exposure to them. Those pups are CUTE!

Thanks everyone!

Cliff - I know. That listing is horribly done.

MJ - I can't wait until she's big enough to have some real fun with. Puppies are cute, but not my thing. It's everyone else that wants a puppy!

LL - I haven't meant an Entlebucher yet, but I love what I have read. If this falls through, we will be taking a closer look at them They sound very similar to the ACDs my aunt and uncle have had which is what was attracting me to them. We like batty dogs. Makes life more fun!

Monkeys - I actually was interested in getting a Border Collie, but no go with the family members. They think BCs are too neurotic and not 'sturdy' enough. LOL Argument was futile. At least we did not end up with the Corgi that my aunt wanted. That is not my cup of tea!

Still waiting to hear back. We are all getting antsy and starting to pick out names. I like Mayhem (May for short), Anarchy (Annie for short) and Chaos (Kay for short).

It was. I have seen a lot of breed write ups listing a dog as large even when I don't think they are. Basset Hounds were listed as large because of their weight when they are dwarves! It boggles. I consider large Ike sized and up like a nice Mastiff.

I am so over puppies. For the last 3 years every time a dog hit a year old I started over again with a puppy. I am DONE with baby anythings. Baby dogs, baby people, baby parrots..hell, I don't even want baby fish!

Only if your psychiatrist has you on the good meds!

My Aunt had a rotten little Corgie. I hated that smelly, ungroomed, misbehaving, mean, little thing! I couldn't even manage to be sad when it finally died. She got a "Puggle" a few months later and I try not to gag every time I see it.

Still waiting to hear back. We are all getting antsy and starting to pick out names. I like Mayhem (May for short), Anarchy (Annie for short) and Chaos (Kay for short).

I vote Mayhem! It fits the breed and I get a laugh out of the "Mayhem" Allstate Insurance commercials!
