Default How do you all travel with multiple dogs?
I am planning a vacation for my family but I came across a dilemma. I have one too many dogs to travel with. Normally my mother comes by daily to tend to them while I am gone but she will be out of town that weekend. Any advice?

I board Bentley. It's a facility attached to my vet office. I trust them completely and they love Bentley.

But traveling with them, I only have 1 dog per car, I guess I could do 2 but they would have to be crated.

We board our dogs at a very nice place by a great woman who understands and is very willing to accommodate our breeds.

There is no way I could transport all my dogs at one time. There are many options, for us my mom also comes and takes care of the dogs if I have to be away or I hire someone to do it. We have not had a vacation in 5 years but it is all good

You can board, you can hire someone, you can rent a bigger car, you can buy a pull trailer with air, you can see if a friend will take the extra dog while your away or you can call your vets office to see if they can help....If I lived close to you I would take care of it for you Thinking about getting into boarding for the breed since it is so hard to find people to do it....Good luck

Celtic....the lady who boards ours has a perfect set up! She said it cost a pretty penny to build but it was built when she was breeding racing hounds. She got out of breeding and is making hella money boarding. She can handle 20 dogs at once and charges 12 bucks a day. She stays booked. If my lot was zoned differently I would get into boarding in a heart beat!

We take crates - one is loose in the car while the rest are crated. (we rotate them out depending on how far we are going).. a lot of the times family will keep a few if we can not take them all

I crate dogs while traveling. Can you fit multiple crates in your vehicle?

Crate. Even with just my lone little Roxie I crate because she's a hassle to travel with. I did have to board Buddy at the vet once cuz we went to Disneyland, and I can't say I'd do it again in WI. The people in my area are NOT good.

Uncomfortably.

Last time we just rented a van to fit me, boy toy, my mom, my brother, the 3 dogs and our stuff. And we all barely fit.

I'm not sure how.

My last boarding experience was sooo terrible, one of my dogs was kicked to death :/

If we want to go some where we crate my lab and little pit mix and my pit and bull terrier ride lose in the cab, everyone gets a nylabone and they ride contently.

Thanks guys! I am going to crate two and leave one with my brother in law. I am going to leave him with the easy to handle female. My boys would probably mount my brother in law! Any hotels/motels you recommend?

Just do it. What is one too many dogs?
I have three and could and will easily travel from SF to Vacouver with all of them. Just me and three. It's not a big deal. They all like to travel. I will bring crates etc BUT they will be in the AC cab as we drive. It's too hot for them to be anyhwere else. I mostly drive at night.. or I start at about 3 am so I avoid traffic in Portland and Seattle, and don't anticipate a problem with the dogs. Rest areas and gas stations... My family knows what to expect on their end...
I think, Days Inn and Motel Six and Homestead, Residence Inn, Extended Stay America all allow dogs. IF you have an AAA guide to hotels, it indicates which ones are dog friendly

Ug, after working at a vet clinic for a year I will NEVER board my dogs at a vet clinic. two 5 minute "walks" is the only attention they got. The rest of the day they were locked up in kennel runs with nothing else whatsoever. I have 5 dogs, and next time that we go out of town we're just renting a van and setting a couple kennels up. If we'll be staying somewhere, we'll leave Callie and Jokes, and possibly Lady (the easy to watch ones) for the MIL to watch. I am too paranoid about boarding my dogs to ever do it. I'm so sorry stardog What happened?

I haven't had to travel with my 3 because I never go anywhere. However, if I was taking a road trip I would put them all in the back of the car and use
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-UNIVERSAL-DO...ht_2759wt_1139.

The hatchback area is not carpeted for easy cleaning in case anyone gets car sick and its big enough for all 3 to lay down or sit up and look out the window which leaves the back seat space for the kids and keeps the dogs from disturbing the driver.

Course, this doesn't work if you have a dog that doesn't get along with other dogs.

My vet also does boarding, but when I went on a tour I got the impression it was as Kissapittie said. The dogs were all in kennels and it looked like the staff was too busy to do much more than quick potty walks. I don't think I would board at the vet unless it was a dire emergency.

La quinta is pet friendly I think. Try BringFido.com - Pet Friendly Hotel Dog Travel Directory. I think that is a helpful website but I might have it wrong.

This is just a website/blog about traveling with your dogs in general. I found it may be helpful to all of us that travel w/our pit bulls. I know, they do list "Dog Parks" but that doesn't mean the other stuff won't be helpful.

im curious.. how do you come about hiring someone for the job? i know not alot of people are too happy to see dogs on chain spots, and trusting someone to do what you say is very nerve wracking to me.

If you go through a professional pet sitting service they are bonded and insured professionals who should mind their own business and follow orders. I see CL ads for petsitters pretty frequently and I bet you could find a ton of them including references by using google. I wouldn't trust someone I hadn't met in person or who wasn't bonded and insured, though.
