Your dogs to carry on when some one knocks on your front door?.
Sleeping out in the shed at night sometimes, very rarely creeps me out as I think.. 'What would I do if some one was creeping around in the back yard?'. I know I am safe in my room (pretty much anyway unless some one breaks the glass door). I had always hoped the dogs would loose it if some one was to approach my room because dogs are a good scare for some people.. Now, I only need people to think I have to vicious dogs in my room that will bite if I let them out, lol. Sunny probably wouldn't but Serenity might... then again, I reckon Sunny would help her if she went for some one. That's besides the point. I remember when I first came into the shed. The first night mum approached, they went nuts when mum approached the shed but as soon as they saw her, they were all wiggles and love. Since then, they had hardly done it except rarely, here and there. Today though my sister was walking to my room and the dogs went nuts but were all wiggles when they saw her. I mentioned that to my mum and I was told that last night when my brother went out the back.. Boy did they go off. Cept I don't remember cause I was fast asleep cept my brother did say I said 'SHUT UP' to them, I don't remember. So, the point, I feel safe to know the dogs will go off if people are creeping around at night, I was never sure if they would. There 'vicous' sounding barks would hopefully scare some one off, especially if a threat was added in there. Cept I would call mum and let her know some one was around while the dogs carried on.. I'd prefer to stay safe!. So, I am curious.. Do you allow your dogs to carry on when people approach your front door? or are they made to behave?. I don't encourage them but i don't tell them off. I just let them go for it. I know they wont hurt my family so I don't care. When I know it's a family member i'll tell them to settle down. I feel safe if they carry on so I allow it, I am not some one who's going to go out and risk my life or go to the front door with friendly looking dogs in case there's some weird ass person outside. Maybe if I had a Rottweiler i'd feel safe but I don't so.. I'll let there barks be intimidating. ---------- Post added at 06:08 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:02 AM ---------- I am teaching them to behave when I tell them to though. Also, do you think your dogs would go off if some one was creeping around your house?. ---------- Post added at 06:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:08 AM ---------- For those who don't know, the dogs sleep with me at night. ---------- Post added at 06:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:29 AM ---------- . And my room is out the back, in a nice big shed. |

I personally want my dogs to alert me to someone coming up my walk or knocking on my door. I never correct it and just put them in their spots before opening the door. I can say with almost 100% certainty that if someone comes into my room when Im asleep, my dogs will have a problem with it. If someone walks in my front door, Im not so sure theyll have the same reaction.

Just my two cents here, but if you're old enough get a gun. My dogs "alert" me if there's a noise, but I would never let them judge if the situation warrants more or less barking. Have a solid quiet command in place too. If someone is trying to communicate over loud barking how will you hear it. I also don't expect my dogs to protect me in any situation. If they do, bravo!, if not it won't matter. I got a glock aimed at your chest. Remember no matter what breed of dog you have it's your job as owner to protect them, not the other way around. Again, this is just how I handle things in my house.

I don't know if it's due to him being part and he got this trait, but my dog has that perfect, quiet approach. He alerts me with one deep bark and then stands at attention until he sees that there is no danger. Then he goes back to goofy mode. I never wanted a protection dog, I want a guard dog who alerts me to the issue only, which he does perfectly.
Plus I'm also a gun owner and collector. Im confident I could take on a small country should they decide they wanted my house :-D |

My dogs tend to do exactly what Drs1321's does. They will each let out one deep bark and then when we react, go stand at the area of the intruder and wait for us to address the situation. They will block to door or window until we have checked out the situation and given them a release "That'll Do" or "Enough". They do not bark and carry on, but stand alert waiting for what is next. Once we have scoped out the situation and given the release the dog usually go back to their spots. If the situation is not safe we give a "Watch" command and the dogs stand their ground until released. This said, keep in mind that our dogs are not our protectors, they are however deterents and have on a number of occasions given us the opportunity to take control of the situation at hand. Although I know that my 100 Lb. Rottie can take a grown man to the ground easily, I never ask her to do it. I believe we are a team and my part is to make the decisions as to what is a bad situation and deal with it. I only ask my dogs to give me the warning and give me the time I need to take control of the situation. I also have a 500,000 volt stun batton at the ready for just those situations.

As long as your dogs trust you and your judgement to stop going off then there shouldn't be an issue. Raj does not and I repeat...does not like anyone approaching the house when I am home. I have a cue word that.makes him stop. I trust raj's judgement of.character but always just to be sure...I double check outside before I put him in his crate. I.doubt he would bite anyone but I wont depend on him enough to set him up to fail.

Lily rarely barks, but when she does, I pay attention.
Liberty is a very good alert barker and is able to differentiate between something that needs to be barked at (someone at the door) and something that doesn't need to be barked at (a person walking down the street). Neither dog I allow to carry on though. Liberty knows "enough" is enough, and I have the situation under control. Lily, if she barks, just lets out a deep "arrooo-uff" type noise and that's usually the end of that. But she also knows "enough" on the rare occasion that she feels the need to bark 2 or 3 times. |

When someone is at the door, my dogs are allowed to "go nuts". The logistics of my home are such that, the very first thing I do before answering the front door is within a few steps and across the kitchen, I release the dogs out of the home and to the confinement of the backyard .
After I greet whomever is at the door and once the dogs have settled down and as appropriate, I allow the dogs back inside. |

I have never not allowed zoey to warn me of strangers in any situation. I don't usually have to command her with "enough" as she usually stops shortly after. Unless someone really approached with fierce/force and it does seem highly threatening that would even leave me feeling spooked, which has happen.

no Peanut doesn't bark much. if he barks i know someone is there. if he realizes who it is he stops right away but i know that if he doesn't then it is a stranger. i do not rely on him to be a protector. i like that he is an alert but if i am in danger i do own guns and i will protect him and myself

The Baegle X Border Collie mix will bark at anything and everything.
Our GSD will bark at someone that comes up our walkway. Both are expected to be quiet when told to do so. However, the GSD is usually the more compliant of the two. The GSD will scream at you in greeting though (higher pitched bark as a welcome). If you get him to stop doing that, he usually whines for a little bit. |

The bulldogs are attention whores and do the "Pet me!" bark if they know who it is. If they don't know who is at the gate, they'll alert bark, then look back and see if I am coming. If not, they'll continue to bark at intervals if the person doesn't leave.
Bukra will rush the gate with a bark, and will only carry on if the person gets out of their vehicle and approaches the gate. If they stay in their vehicle, he'll just watch them from farther back. I want to know if someone is here, but I want the dogs to stfu once I am aware... I hate dogs that keep barking! So I know that if my dogs DO keep on, there is something really wrong. |

My dogs are allowed to have at it from the moment they notice someone at the door to the point that I open it. They know this, and will only bark until the point that my hand touches the doorknob, at which point they'll shut up and their following behavior will depend on how they feel about the person on the other side of the door: strangers get a quiet, unbreaking leer while friends get the happy-dance.
There's only been one time that Reba, my older GSD would not let up when a new gentleman came to visit my sister late at night. Being a fairly open dog, it was unlike her to behave that way, and she made it painfully clear that his very existence was a burden to her...lol. He was promptly notified that since my dog didn't want him in the house right then, I didn't either and that she could meet him outside. |
