very true. When i was a groomer this was a clear sign to me that it was time to stop whatever I was doing and get a muzzle. I think it looks very specific when that is the reason for the lip licking, i would never say it looked like a dog that wanted to eat, it is similar to an uneasy dog flicking it's tongue combined with a stiff frozen look. that might be a bad description, but after a few sets of stiches i remembered what it meant,
I know exactly what you mean, I'm very familiar with that sign. Lip licking means the dog is super uncomfortable. A lot of dogs do it as a "Go away, leave me alone" or "I'm SUPER uncomfortable/nervous/worked up" thing.

Bransen usually licks his lips when you scratch him somewhere that's itchy, he will lick and lick and lick. He also gnaws at the air as if he's doing the scratching.
When he wants to go after another dog, he goes completely still and tenses up.
If the dog is close (less than 10 feet away) and looking at him, he will try to pull and stand up on his hind legs at the end of the leash.

If he sees a small dog/puppy or realizes he likes the small of the dog (if it's a female, he typically does) then he relaxes and his tail starts going.

When he is playing off leash and another dog isn't paying attention, he does his "leapord stocking gazelle" impression, crouching real low down while doing a smooth and slow army crawl. That is hilarious.

Yeah, mine go stiff as a board, tail straight up and a "oh, hell yeah, bring it on look in their eye". As long as mine are moving around they are good, when they are still and intent, I had better hang on to the leash with both hands. ie... my Avatar....
