Crates
I'm looking for a new cage for my pup. I dont have enough to get one of the massive cages, has anyone had any experince with one of these. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...540&pcatid=540

Those seem really expensive to me.. You can get the same thing at Petsmart for half the price.. Though I don't use wire crates so I don't know if there are differences but these are cheaper:
Midwest Life Stages Training and Travel Crates - 1600 Series - New Puppy Center - Dog - PetSmart |
http://www.amazon.com/Remington-Kennel-36-Inch-24-Inch-26-5-Inch/dp/B0021QVPYQ
Depending on the size it's about ~40% off right now... free shipping. |
Someone gave me one of those for free once. I don't like wire crates, but they were just going to throw it out so I took it and let me tell you, that thing was a pain in the ass the take down and reassemble. I try to discourage anyone I can from any kind of wire crate. I came home one day to find my Aussie pup with his head stuck between the panels where he had managed to bend them. He could have easily choked to death.I will never use one again.

I have one and its fine..
Got it from Walmart. But then again, Bear isnt a crazy dog who breaks out of shit. He caught his toe in the bottom of the cage one time and it hurt/freaked him the fuck out, so he doesnt mess with the door at all. Mine folds down really easy also. |
have you tried looking on craigslist? that is where i get my crates much cheaper.
i do use both the plastic style and wired BUT they are for events i do not crate Peanut when he can't be supervised. though i have to admit his new wired crate is pretty well designed. |
I have one with a similar door that I like. Does it have those long metal rods in all the corners? If so.. I freakin HATE my crate that has those. Hard to put together and take apart and just a stupid set up all together...

Ewww... I just looked at more info on it... ya.. it's got those stupid corner pins. RUN don't walk away from that thing! It will make you hate crates and anything NEAR them! lol

Gaud.. if you were close enough Hanchett, I'd give you mine. You'd probably regret it though. LOL

I own every kind of crate you can imagine from wire to stainless steel. I do not own an APBT that cannot escape a wire crate. If I use them for my APBT I have to zip tie all the area's where the crate connects. So they only get used for my American Bullies....
I also suggest searching CL and even your thrift stores, I have given as little as 8.00 for a nice big crate at thrift stores. |
I have a Pro Concepts crate and a Pro Select crate. Both two door, collapsable crates. They work just fine and are probably way easier than a drop pin setup!
http://www.petco.com/product/13372/P...og-Crates.aspx Kinda like this except black and two door.... I like the door latches a lot better than the pro concepts one... http://www.amazon.com/ProSelect-Gold...9275818&sr=8-9 If $$ weren't an object, I'd build a dog room with seperate indoor kennels that are working dog/husky proofed with kuranda dog bed and part of the floor covered with rubber mats to make it easier on joints... I have the whole thing planned out in my head. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png And have heavy duty aluminum crates for travel and whatnot: http://search.store.yahoo.net/gundog...g&query=crates |
I have a precision crate (42") with 2 doors, totally collapsible and very easy to assemble and take down.
I got it at hayneedle and then got a coupon code and got 20.00 off and free shipping. Trigger is usually only in it for an hour or two during the day and all night. No problem, he was crate trained as a pup. |
I have never liked drop pin crates or ex-pens. Have had them and opted to spend a little more to not deal with the drop pins.
|
if you prepare wire crates well, then they are more escape proof. this is what i had to do to mine along all the edges.... for the travel crates i use zip ties.

I got one wire crate from the pet store and 2 from Craigslist. They are the same style as pictured above. Both work fine for my dogs, but then none of them try to escape.
