Default To those of you who are conditioning/keeping your dogs...
Exactly what are you doing to get them into shape? What's your schedule? What are you feeding, how much, and when?

I ask cause I want to get Eagle into shape (possiable Vindex too but he isn't here yet with the housing thing so I'm not sure on him yet) I know she isn't papered or anything I just want to do it to get that puppy fat off her . She's currently 55lbs now.
I hadddd photos to show you how she's looking now but my laptops in the shop right now so ill have to wait for that. Hopefully my mom will let me upload to her slow computer and I can do it that way.

But yea a little about her. Where in the city so I have no spring pole lol. I do have access to a yard she can run in. I have a bike that I take out every once in a while when I want to run her. And I walk her 2-3 times a day. I can probably build a flirtpole if I got slow people directions. I'm just scared she's going to let go and its going to wack me in the face. Seriously! But yea lol, she eats 3/4s of a cup of BG dog food the chicken formula twice a day. Umm that's about it. Oh yea and there's A LOT of hills and stairs around here.

I want to know as well. Bonnie's a Dobe so it'll be different from an APBT, but I want to get and keep her in good shape... she doesn't have the temperament to be a working dog, but I want her to look like she is.

easy flirt pole. go to horse tack or tractor supply, buy a lunge whip. attach cow hide or stuffless toy with a kot to the end up the whip. tada. now move your arm around.

I'm in new york city... we have no such stores, just home depot and lowes. And I don't know where lowes is lol.
But also to the folks who walk their dogs, do you keep them on heel or do you allow them to pull?

I don't make my dog heel unless I want him near me or we are crossing the street. I don't believe you should heel the dog during the entire walk. It is quite boring for the dog. I let him sniff in designated areas, and do loose leash walking. I do not allow him to pull, that is a 'no no' for me. And then we run, but only when I allow him to run.

What works for one dog doesn't always work for another. You really need to develop your own plan. Do some research on keeps and get a basic knowledge of how it's done and go from there.

Long and the short of it is your dog doesn't really need a "keep" as it is never going to be matched. Lots of hard exercise and a good diet and you'll achieve what you want.

Tractor Supply ships. Buy the whip off the web site and have them send it to you.

I am not conditioning my dog, but I would use a variety of exercises so me and the dog don't get bored. Some biking, some flirt pole, some walking/jogging or rollerblading. Anything you can think of that gets your dog moving.

Yea I didn't mean a heel 24/7 a loose lead is usually how I let her walk unless the sidewalks crowded. I jog for a bit, but my gut, and my asthma doesn't allow me to go far lol.

True true. I kinda just wanted examples and ideas. Thanks

I was thinking of doing roller blading with her but the amount of hills and smalls dogs that be off leash added to the fact that I'm on wheels scares me a bit lol.

And thanks for the link!

I will have to take a pic of my flirt pole for you. I went to home depot and made it myself. As far as the work out I am also living in the city. I work the dog an hour a day and I always end the work out with a flirt pole because my dog goes bonkers for it. I will walk him for 15-20 mins so that way he can do his thing and is good and empty before doing any actual work then I will have him run next to the bike (or whatever work we are doing that day) for an hour followed up by flirtpole then a 15 min cool down walk and a half hour later food. I will have him drag a light chain with him on hand walking days (3.5lbs). He is not a fan of the spring pole but I can get him to work it for about 10mins some times.
On walks I do allow him to pull because I think it gives him a better workout. The only time where I would find it unacceptable for a dog is it was an obedience or rally dog and my dog is not.
A few examples of what I do with my dog is handwalking, flirtpole, springpole sometimes, dragging chain, running next to the bike, free running in the woods, fetch, and tug. I try to mix it up the best I can to get an all around work out for him.
I feed my dog Evo and he gets 1 and three quarters cup of food a day.

So is he only eating once a day? Do you think I should switch Eagle back to once a day to get better effects? Or just do it with the exercises first feed. And at night time still give her the rest of her food.
There was a thread around here about someones keep (before an actual match I think though)... I gotta remember where it was....

In the keeps they fed their dog once a day. I divide the food into 3 times a day but I would like to get it down to twice a day. I feed him once in the morning before I go to work, after work I work him then feed him again, then feed him again before I go to bed.

Here is my flirt pole. Its made from rope and (pvc?) tubing. I just strung the rope through it and knotted it at both ends. It is strong and flexible enough to with stand a tug match and the dog hitting it at full speed yet light enough to move it good.

When Gypsy was in peak condition last summer, we did a ton of walking, hiking, and flirt pole. Our activity depended on the day. Some days all we did was walk for three miles, some days we'd go on a two hour hike. Sometimes walks and flirt pole. And we went to the park for fetch three or four times a week.

I didn't consider it putting her through a 'keep' or condition. I just want to keep Gypsy lean and healthy. She's slowly getting back into shape this summer, but I doubt she will look as good as she did last year, because her knees and spine have started to bother her more, and it restricts the activities we can do and the length of time we can do them.

Anywho, here is a picture from last year, in december.
