We had a little get together at out house the other day, and some freakin lady says to my parents that if we dont put up a beware of dog sign we would be liable if some one jumped into our yard and got bit (even tho that probably wouldnt happen). Anyways it kinda makes me frustrated due to the fact that putting up the sign gives people the image saying "yes our dog is dangerous". If someone did get bit such as a UPS, electrician, ect delivering a package or something i dont think that sign would do me anygood in court anyways. A sign such as dog in yard would be more reasoniable. Anyways in my opinion i feel like having this sign posted on both of my fences just makes my dog look bad to the public especially if he has not even barked at anyone outside my yard. Especally sense jackson relates to a pitbull it just mucks up the whole image that i'm trying to produce. Even if a dog jumps out at me and they fight some people will blaim it on my dog and myself. The sign just makes it worst, and gives people a reason to look into my yard. That's what i do, "oh look a beware of dog sign, i wonder what kinda dog they have? .... Oo its a Lab.."
![]() Opinions? and plus if someone jumped into my yard to mess around i should have the right to throw rocks at him. What are the reasons for these pansy laws! I heard a story where this man broke into someone's house and dog cut up by glass and sued the owners of the house? I mean cmon wtf if you break into my house and you got cut thats your freakin fault dont blaim me. And i heard he won the case! |

I was also told by our insurance company that putting up a Beware of Dog sign, in the event something happens, can be used against you in court because it can be seen as admitting your dog is dangerous. They also said that not putting up a sign could leave you open to a lawsuit if someone comes into your yard and gets bit. The happy solution is to post No Trespassing and/or Dog on Property signs and secure your yard so that meter readers and such cannot get it unless you let them in.

Eh, I just have a "Beware of Dogs" sign on my door. The mail box is outside of my fence, and the meter men know already to wait to see me in the yard before they come to read the meters. I'm not too worried about anyone else since I've already spoken with the water and power company and moved the mail box.

I've always wondered this too. We have a lot of kids on our block who say "can we come in and play with the puppies?!?!?" Of course, I don't let them unless I'm out there (usually with only one dog at a time). I put additional locks on my fence, but always wondered what would happen if one was to come over the fence without supervision. I don't think my dogs would bite them. But maybe a "dogs on property" sign is a good idea. I've never thought of that. Thanks for the posts

I am under the impression that if you put up one of those signs you are already claimiing fault for something your dog has not done yet. You are basically admitting you have a dangerous dog. That being said after a string of robberies hit my moms neighborhood and I believe she had some items stolen from the garage at her home. She now has 2 beware of dog signs. Granted her little dog is only 4LBS She is a feisty little thing lol. Most of the people I knoe with beware of dog signs dont actually own a dog. Personally I wouldnt do it. If someone that doesnt belong in your yard comes in your yard and gets bit, well they didnt belong there in the first place. If you are going to put any sign up I would go with NO TRESPASSING.

Posting "Beware of Dog" signs vary by state, county, city, even neighborhood. In an area I used to live in North Georgia, if you had a large dog that was in your yard, and you wanted to PREVENT being held liable for injuries from your dog protecting your property (legitimately) you were required to post a "Beware of Dog" sign per local law enforcement and local ordinances.
In other areas, posting a "Beware of Dog" sign says, "my dog is dangerous. I can be held liable if he bites." We have "DOG ON PREMISES" signs on our two gates on our privacy fence. Granted, our dogs aren't outside when we're not home, but it lets people know, "hey...caution. We have dogs," but it doesn't suggest anything. |

I have 4 beware of sign dogs around all the sides of my home. In my state I am only liable if a guest gets bit, or someone providing a service. If someone illegally breaks in to my home with criminal intent I am covered by the law. Robbers scout out homes and I am sure they avoid any homes that have beware of dog signs, I don't care if it makes my dog look bad as long as it is deterring my home for a robbery.

I think its one of those damned if you do damned if you dont situations. I would look into the "dog on duty" or similar signs instead though. NO TRESPASSING...short and sweet We don't have a sign currently, but at our old house it was just "Dogs on Premises". It let everyone know we had dogs. My UPS, Mail, and termite men, always called me before they dropped off a package or inspected our traps just to see if I was home. |
