Default is my dog a pitbull?
have just got a 5month old pup, i took him in as he wasnt being looked after properly. when i got him i was told he was a staff possibly staff cross as he was a bit bigger than a staff would be at his age. the first day i got him people were stopping me and asking me if he was a pitbull, since then my friends have said he looks like one. he is 'champagne blue' with a red/brown nose and yellowy eyes, he seems skinnier than a staff and his ears are apparantly a little bigger. is there anyway of me finding out if he is a pit without having to have him put down if he is?

There's no way to know what your pup is without valid papers showing his history. Why would you have to put him down if he is a pit/pit mix though? I don't get that at all.

There are many knowledgeable people here who could guess but without seeing the parents and knowing the history you'll never know for sure.

There is way no of knowing unless you have a pedigree on your dog. Just enjoy your pup and post up some pics. Why would you have to put him down if he's a pit bull or mix?

probably BSL?

If so, it doesn't usually matter what a dog actually is...if it looks like a "pit bull", it's considered a "pit bull" so, the dog's in danger regardless.

Most likely he is not. If you were told he is likely some sort of crossbreed then he likely is a mongrel.

I'm curious also. Why would you have to put him down? If its a BSL issue then do a DNA test. Theres a good chance it'll come back something other than pit bull terrier.

Ah, yes you don't have a pitbull. Call it a staff mix or whatever you want to call it, just don't call it a pitbull.

But how would the vet know? They just look at a dog and if it resembles the APBT they kill it. When I lived in london I read an article stating they usually base it off looks and aggression.

I do see people in London walking what they call "pits" not sure how they get the dog cared for.

BSL is Breed Specific Legislation.

http://www.pbrc.net/breedspecific.html

Can you post pics of him? We won't know what he is.. but may be able to give you an idea but he is only a puppy and his looks can change 5 months from now, so it's really not safe to say what he is or resembles until he is older. You can call him a Staff mix though.

Without papers you will never truely know the breed of the dog.

But like krista said, we can guess with you.

your dog will be viewed as a "pitbull" that's really all you need to know... and all you will know lol.. you can't tell breed without paperwork from a legit breeder

inform on your laws and if you must.. hide the fucker if you love him lol just know what you risk
there was a ban in the netherlands for years (now revoked).. people just hide their dogs, plain and simple

If you like him, keep him out of sight. In my honest opinion he is a mix but that won't make anybody any difference.Keep him out of sight and don't show him off.

I thought the UK had adopted a policy of turning a blind eye unless the dog started causing trouble. They have found their legislation to be all but useless and dog attacks have increased considerably since it's introduction. Some are calling for it to be repealed.
