At what month do they split?

I meant at what month does the dogs back split in half? Like when the dogs muscles on the top like split like human abs? Lol pretty dumb question I never had a matured dog before. Im just on the way with a 10 month puppy http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png

What do you mean? Explain further or post a picture.

lapyignipinge 12-20-2010 03:09 AM

Um... A dog's muscles and whatnot develop until they're mature.. There is no certain month when they change completely into an adult..

Are you referring to the line down a dog's back, over the spine, that dips in a bit?

All that is is the spine, with muscle on either side coming up higher..

Barryrich 12-20-2010 03:11 AM

Ah those muscles. Not all dogs will have that even after they mature. Genetics, such a fun thing.

Not too many dogs of any breed get to the point that it's really noticable...if you've never seen it you'd have no idea what the OP is talking about...but I have seen it once on a really nice APBT bitch a friend owned. That dog was ripped...*and* just a house dog...her muscle was purely genetic. Makes me wonder what she would have looked like conditioned.

OP--bullies tend to start developing real muscle mass betwqeen 1-2 years old, and sometimes don't completely fill out till 4 years of age. You've got plenty of time. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png

See the line between her shoulder blades? It usually will go all the way back to the base of the tail, where two muscles meet the spine.

He thinks that the muscles that develop on the sides of the spine along a dog's back means that the muscle somehow splits....

thanks for the pic. i've seen dogs like the above... but i dont believe i've seen it where it goes all the way back

any one else with some more pix?

i know my younger dogs shoulders really filled out at about 3'ish y/o... and she's not conditioned. she could look real nice if i worked her but she's has a lazy human lol so now she's lazy

kHy87gPC 12-20-2010 04:13 AM

g-d page 60 of most ripped photos. those muscles. (do not feel like getting permission to link the photo.)

Dfvgthyju 12-20-2010 04:20 AM

It shouldn't go all the way back to the tail, as the muscle groups do not extend back that far...but in some really muscular dogs it can be visable almost down to the hips.

It's not really deep or anything...just slightly raised on either side of the spine.

Here's a dog anotamy pic of musculature. It's the muscle's on either side that run up along the shoulders and spine that create the effect the OP is describing.

This is a whippet with a genetic mutation that doubles it's muscle mass. You can kinda see the faint bulge on either side of the spine.

ok... i'm no longer confused. i get what op is saying now, i was just thinking something more exaggerated or something

Barryrich 12-20-2010 04:25 AM

I laugh when I see that dog... it's just funky looking lol

You can usually see it more when the dog stands on it's hind legs. Can't find a picture of it, though...

Lmaooo at the way the op asked the question
Anddd ewwwwwwwww at the whippet id be terrified of that dog. But not even cuz of the face id be scared its gonna knock me out lmao

Dfvgthyju 12-20-2010 03:48 PM

What's even funnier is the whippit's a female. Biiig, butch babe, that one. lol

Good find, Truedog...it's really not that easy to find one with a realy noticable "split" lol.

Hell...that description works...I'm just gonna stick with it. I've never discussed the "split" before...so never had reason to call it anything. lol

KeestRast 12-20-2010 05:40 PM

Wendy the Whippet isn't ripped - she actually has 2 copies of the Myostatin Deficiency Mutation gene. They've got a test for it now and since it comes with a basket full of other health issues, more often breeders are culling puppies that test positive. A Dog can have 1 copy of the mutation and I believe that it doesn't cause other physical problems.

Just wanted to make sure folks know that it's not normal in Whippets.

JohnTruels 12-21-2010 01:44 AM

It's the same as human abs; it depends on muscularity and conditioning, not age. I didn't just get abs the day I turned 21 or anything.
