Recommended GSD breeders?
 

I know this isnt a forum for GSDs but I have seen many pics of them so I figured I would ask. I grew up with GSDs and I currently own an 18 month old SBT. We are going to be buying a house soon that has 5 acres and we are looking into adding a GSD.

Please recommend some breeders for us.

i am looking to buy one, not get one from a rescue. i do not plan on 'working' him/her. and i would like to go and visit the breeder and pick out a pup(or have the pup pick me). so shipping is probably out unless someone can convince me otherwise.

i currently live north of dallas but plan on moving to KS in the wichita area.

there are quite a few good show bred breeders out in mid FL, i really hope you know what youre getting yourself into with a GSD cause IMO APBTs are a breeze compared to a GSD.

Shipping is a good choice IMHO. You can look at WAY more GOOD breeders that way. Also, you can fly up to meet the pup and the parents before you take the pup home.

Personally, with a good REPUTABLE breeder you aren't really going to get to choose. The way that I do it is this, I evaluate the litter from the time they are born, do a full evaluation at 8 weeks, that helps seperate the pet puppies from the working puppies. I then tell people, here are the pet puppies, these 2 would be suitable for your home, they pick between the 2. If you look at the WHOLE litter and pick a working quality puppy but you just want a pet, I'm not going to sell you the working pup. These are all potential...anything with a puppy is a crapshoot.

Broadening your horizon to shipping would be a good thing.

Also, for a well bred pet quality puppy, you're looking at around $600 from health tested parents. $750 is the lowest I've seen for a pup out of health tested TITLED parents.

^^^ And I agree w/ this 110%!!! I've had my pit bull for 8 years & my (3 yr old) GSD for 2 months. The GSD is very different than the pit bull.

I think VKH summed it up well. Best thing you can do is include shipping as a possibility and chat with someone very experienced with the breed.

Even with chatting with breeders' and breed owners its still taken me several years to really pin down the specifics of what breeders would work for me. Of course I want a working dog and not just a pet. yeah. they drive me insane alot of the time http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/lol.gif i have one that does have a job, and one i purposely got to be a low drive dog, and shes worse than the one with a job! bitch could overheat herself and STILL want to go go go go. If you have some serious patience and expect to have to work the dog in something even if you DID get a pet quality, then go for it. but theyre just. ugh. they make me want to tear my hair out sometimes haha

My girl Umah is from the same breeder (they are actually littermates) as VKH's Judge. She knows much more about GSD's than I ever will, so I'm sure she will point you in the right direction!

My girl is a pet quality dog from working dog lines, and even though she's pet quality, she is still very high energy and a load of fun!

Even the pet quality dogs from working lines can be a lot of dog. If you are truly looking for a pet, I'd recommend a showline, West German or American. I know a few good breeders of those as well. Just let me know.

I know a good West German showline breeder in my area that will ship. Her dogs are actually capable of work though, so I'm not sure how lazy they'd be for a pet owner. Its what makes them fun right? I love the go, go, go! Even my screwball foster mutt gets all begitty if she doesn't have a job and someone firmly in charge.

I think the OP may have left again. Who knows. GSDs are HARD to deal with if you are not adequately prepared!

i am still here!!! its finals week and ive been writing some last minute papers. i do appreciate the input and i will definitely consider shipping a pup as well as going to a few shelters.

these next few weeks will be hectic with holiday travel and school, but i will definitely be contacting a few people on here for more info.

i love go go go go dogs but when theyre still trying to roll around figgiting on the floor or even wanting to go back out even after theyre dead tired from ball time, training, flirt, spring pole, and a run, its insane. lol

hahaha like i said some people love it. and while i do love my GSDs, like i said they drive me nuts sometimes http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/tongue.png and you would LOVE a dutchie as far as i know from a trainer/breeder friend of mine, theyre even MORE of it lol. and yeah i know the wooing all too well. took care of a friends mix once. that dog was one heck of a woo'er. was cute, but i was also glad i didnt have to live with it all of the time LOL
