If you don't want her to play rough, don't let her play. The other dog will let her know when she's getting too rough for them. I let mine wrestle to their heart's content. Just keep an eye on body language and make sure it's not going to escalate. If you're unsure of the body language, break it up and make them take a break, or just don't let her play with other dogs.
I only let my two play together. Not a big fan of letting them play with other people's dogs. I don't trust other dogs, and I don't trust other people. |

In my (limited) experience Bull Terriers playing together do not look like they are playing, really rough. With other dogs it's still rough ( you need big ones, little ones get broken ) but other breeds don't seem to engage as much, run, play wrestle, run some more, rather then Sumo. If in doubt call time immediately & calm the dogs |

Here is my 2 when I finally decided to film them...about 20 minutes after they started. It shows them get into a bit more vocal part after the ear gets bit. But they do this crap all the time, throat grabs, rolls....they each take a turn on the bottom though. |

I also dont alow my dogs to play rough with other peoples dogs that im not familiar with. I have had once incident where by buddies staff lab got aggressive over a toy. The dog grabbed onto my pits neck. I grabbed my dog and he grabbed his, but he started to pull his dog away. I told him to keep them together so his dog would rip my dogs neck to shreds. After leaving them together his dog finally let go. We seperated the dogs, let them calm down, and i re introduced them for a few mins. I never want to leave the situation with a bad memory.
Laci needed a few stiches on her neck and mouth. The next day we got together again and they played perfect like nothing ever happened. Laci is the brindle! Moral of the story is know your dog and body language, as well as other! |

Indie was playing with a pit mix pup her size, and they were doing quite well. Indie has always been one to grab onto the neck skin of other dogs. Well, she kept doing it to this pup, and the pup kept coming back for more, and they were really enjoying themselves. The owners of the pit pup were becoming noticeably nervous about it, so I tried to calm them by telling them that that tends to be how bulldogs play. Well, they kept trying to get their pup to come with them, and stop playing with indie, but the pup wouldn't, so they wound up asking me to hold onto my pup, while they left. What a bummer... They were having so much fun.

I know in danorth's vid, I would have corrected right around the vocalization, because that spat had the potential to escalate. I wouldn't have separated, just said "ah, ah, ah!" (not picking on you, danorth! Just giving an example of how I interpret play) |

when i said my dogs play rough, that is what I meant... MY dogs...
as to playing with other peoples dogs, dogs that they have not been around, dogs they do not know.... the rule is... they don't get to play... when we around new dogs, I keep my dogs on leash and insist that the other person does the same... if we want to allow the dogs to interact at all.... we first take the dogs on leash on a long walk.... keeping them separated in the begining... then as we walk some.. we start getting closer together, getting close enough that the dogs can smell each other, but are constantly on the move.... later in the walk, we will get side by side, but keep them moving... then when the dogs are good and tired... we will allow them to play while on the leash, then if everything looks good... they are allowed off leash with supervision...my dogs are never allowed to interact or play with other dogs unsupervised.... ever... |

I didn't correct my dogs because they define their own boundaries all of the time. I'd rather monitor their behavior them and see if they will figure it out. If they are outside together and play and I'm not around, I want to have a bit of understanding that they'll be ok. I can't leave toys out for them though, they will get more combative and possessive where a bite may occur. So, it isn't necessary for them to have toys. I'll get some more wrestling video of when they first start going at it and post it.

i used to let my dogs do that, too.. let them choose when and how to correct each other. However, I have changed my way of thinking. The way i thought it out, I'm their leader, so I tell them when enough is enough, and I don't let them get that far. If I see a dog going towards another dog chewing on a bone, I'm there first to correct the one approaching. It has worked pretty well, and though it is hard to change everything completely, it has been worth the hard work. They look up to me much better than before, and are a lot more respectful of each other's boundaries. Even as I'm typing this, I had to HEY! them once, because Chansey got nipped a bit too hard. They're all just laying on the bed, now. lol. But I would never tell anyone my method is better than theirs. Whatever works for you and your dogs, use it!

At first i was a bit nervous when Rue came to live with us because Sarge Isn't the least bit aggressive he barks alot around other dogs but is the opposite of DA.She came from the shelter, and we didn't know the history. But initially they didn't seem as thought they were going to get along. After a few days they started to get along ok and they settled right in to chasing each other and wrestling. Now they do it all the time. Some of our friends ( who don't don't own bullies and don't know why we have three ) come over and are like wow are they gonna hurt each other ? Naw they are just playing and soon they were out and go lay down.Even the Puppy Zurel ( 15 weeks ) is starting to get in on the act.though he gets tossed out of the ring more often than not he jumps right back in.The short answer is yes they all play rough ,but we understand what to look for and what to listen for. They love to wrestle.
