Why can't you take the cat? They are portable. Before anyone else goes on about how irresponsible this poster is, please just take in to consideration that we do not know what is currently going on in their lives that may have put them in this unfortunate situation. |

I have to co-sign with ACG. Very well put.
There are many reasons that may be personal that this poster may not want to share. There could be economic reasons (losing their current place, having to move somewhere that does not allow pets), there could be health issues (possibly finding themselves caring for someone with an allergy issue), or any number of issues we don't know (or need to know) about. The poster is not dumping the cat on the streets or on a shelter to deal with... they are trying to find a good home for a pet they can no longer care for (for whatever reason). |

Sorry, but I volunteered at Animal Control for over 2 years. There's no excuse that I buy anymore.
I don't buy "I can't find a place that will allow me to keep my cat." That's just plain laziness. I lost my full-time job, and found a new one making ONE QUARTER of my previous paycheck, and still found an apartment that allowed me to keep all 3 of my dogs. One is over 100 pounds, and another is a pit bull. Put down a one-time deposit. No extra monthly rent. Pets are a lifetime commitment. Lack of responsibility is the reason this country is euthanizing 4 to 7 million healthy animals a year. My pets are my family, and I won't even consider moving somewhere that didn't allow them to come, too. |

But given the alternative - people dumping animals on the streets or in shelters - would you rather encourage (albeit grudgingly) people to fine appropriate "rehousing" for pets they can not longer care for (for whatever the reason, good, bad, or ugly)? Ideally everyone with a pet would be a loving and responsible owner for the rest of the pet's or owner's natural life, but since the reality isn't always that, I would rather people take these kind of steps without being attacked. The next person that feels they can not care for their pet will not take the effort to look for a suitable home if they think that someone will public condemn them for their efforts. Unfortunately that will lead to another pet being dumped on the street or in a shelter for them to deal with. I am not arguing with you, I think we both want the same thing - animals in caring loving homes. Sometimes we might not like the methods people use, but I don't think we want to discourage people to find new homes for pets and just abandon them. For the sake of the animal, sometimes we have to hold our tongue and look at the bigger picture. |

In a perfect world, everyone would love, cherish and take perfect care of their pets from the day they're born until the day they die. In the real world, I am grateful that there are people who start threads on Philadelphia Speaks when the time comes they feel they can no longer do this, instead of just putting their cat out on the street. Thank you, abc, for being one of those folks.
