What are your thoughts on this? There are a lot of opinions...but there are a LOT of side effects too it seems. My pup is 9 weeks old.

Leptospirosis

I live in EF and will take the pup to to Mc Michael and the reservoir. When she gets older we will take her to the Wissahickon occasionally.

I believe a lot of vets do not require or recommend this vaccine anymore and we never got it for our two dogs until we boarded them at Mt. Airy this year. They required the vaccine and we ended up having to get our vet to special order it because they didn't even carry it. Usually when given, it is included with the standard series of vaccines, the DHLPP, which also has distemper, parvo, corono virus. But it is my understanding that a lot of vets use the ones that do not have the Lepto included anymore because of the side effects vs low incidents of the disease. Plus there has been research showing that the vaccine can be immunosuppressive in puppies and that there are several strains of the disease which the vaccine may not cover.

Did your vet recommend it? Honestly you shouldn't be exposing the pup to too many public places until she has all 3 series of vaccinations. I believe Lepto is actually a disease from rodent waste that is spread through water, or ofcourse another infected dog. You would want to avoid places where she might come into contact with these things anyhow, especially since puppies are very susceptible to parvo.

Unfortunately opinions are mixed on this, and there doesn't seem to be a definite answer from the professionals. Here's an article to give you a little more info though.

do you plan on ever boarding the dog? i board my dogs frequently at a variety of facilities and they all require it.
