Realy? Never heard of training to keep them away from snakes.... My daughter was asking because she just got a new dog house too. There have been snakes in the yard before and she is worried about it.
Gosh!! I hope I don't find any live or dead snakes!! I have a ball python in a big wood cage with a screen in front of it in my room that she was interested in for a week or so. She doesn't pay much attention to him anymore. Don't know if that is good or bad. As far as a toy....I was just hoping there was something...the reason I haven't put anything in there is because I have been scared about the choking thng. I have pulled several things out of her throat when I have been around. She probably would have been ok, but I am a over protective mother...lol.....She definately doesn't get the exercise that I wish she would since the time changed. But, that doesn't change the way she is. I can take her all over the place and walk her and everything else. Give her an hour and she is ready to go again...lol... When I get my income tax I am going to get the stuff to make her a running place off of her pen. I think that would make her much happier. Thanks though...glad someone else worries about their puppy as much as me... ![]() I have been reading on here about a spring pole. (I think that is what it is called.) Would someone tell me how to make it and how the dog is to learn to play with it? I have seen a couple of videos, but never seen the actual thing the toy was attached to. |

one thing you can do about snakes is make sure your yard is cleaned up of brush and timber, keeping a clean yard keeps the rodents away which in turn keeps the snakes away, if you clutter your yard you are more likely to get an infestation. I would not worry to much about it if you keep stuff clean, that means no piles of stuff, and if you have things you need to keep together, make sure to move it regularly to prevent rodents from moving in. Like fire wood should be properly stacked, not in a pile, that sorta thing (I watch a LOT of exterminator shows, and wild life shows

OK....I have never really worried about this, but I have my dog in a pen, 10 x 10 x 6 in the daytime. I have a couple of questions:
Is there something that I can put out there that I can be for sure that won't hurt her and be safe? I mean a toy...she needs something!!! I live in the country. Normally, snakes won't come around. Has anyone had that problem? My puppy hasn't had that problem yet...we put dog shavings in the dog house. She is only out in the day. Should I worry? Is there something that creates a boundary for snakes? We have two ponds very close. ls |

if you exercise her enough, she doesnt need a toy. toy+unsupervised=choking hazard imo
snake part, depends on where you live. if youre in the south, and your pup is very small, id check on them often. if theyre bigger, dont worry about it. the only time ive ever had a snake issue is the bitchass rat snake i had under my porch decided to be very curious of my puppy and i chased her ass out, she never came back. most snakes in the US will not come near something that bothers them, they will leave be. (unless of course you got rat snakes, curious little effers. but they wont do harm to your pup) |

Depends on the dog and where you live.
Some friends of mine live out in the country, and their pit bull and JRT looking dog are in kennels, and they find dead snakes in the kennel all the time, no marks on the dogs. And there are only 2 kinds of poisonous snakes around here, which are only found around water, and where there are very few people. |

There really isn't anything that keeps snakes away other than making it not a friendly habitat. Don't leave anything lying around that would make a good hiding spot or draw rodents. Google "snake species" for your region and see what's common in your area. The vast majority of snakes are non-venomous and are actually beneficial to have around. They'll either keep the rodent population down, or like with kingsnakes, will eat any venomous snakes that wander through. If you need more help than that and don't want to disclose on a public forum where you live, please PM me
