Default I need some advice on what to do with my pit/lab mix
Hi-

I'm hoping that some of you experienced people out there can help or offer some suggestions.

I have a lab/pit mix named Pearl that I have had for about 5 years. I am going through a divorce and had to move back with my parents. I was able to bring Pearl with me, but my parents have had enough and don't want a dog around. I am not home a lot either like when I was married so I know it is unfair to her.
I don't think that I can afford to strike out on my own right now as I have had to take over all the bills (what a winner of a soon to be ex-husband I have). I want to know what my options are. I attempted to take her back to the shelter that I adopted her from (in complete tears) and was told (very rudely and without any understanding) that they were not a "no kill shelter" and that because she is older and dog agressive that she would probably be put to sleep. I will do anything I can to avoid this including attempting to find a place that I can afford and taking her with me.

What I really want to know is do any rescues do a long term boarding? Where I can pay for her to stay until I am able to get back on my feet a bit and be in a better situation to afford a place and a dog walker for her since I won't be home as much as I would like?

What if any other suggestions do people have? I am getting desperate and my dad has threatened that I must take her out of the house ASAP or else (he also told me he wished that she was already euthanized, so I am not getting any support from him).

Thanks for your advice and help!

Hello!

You could check with local rescues to see f they can refer you to he boarding facilities they use. Rescues typically get better rates.

Why are your parents so opposed to having her at their home with you?

I wish I could take care of her for you but two dogs in a truck is too much.

Where are you located? There may be local bully rescue orgs that will take her. Check online.

If I were you, I'd google all the dog rescues in your area, preferably ones specializing in pit bulls. Ask them if any of their foster families used to crate and rotate could help you out. I'm sure one of them could be of help, especially since you're offering to foot the bill.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time on the phone.

Hi-

I attempted to take her back to the shelter that I adopted her from (in complete tears) and was told (very rudely and without any understanding) that they were not a "no kill shelter" and that because she is older and dog agressive that she would probably be put to sleep.
They told you the truth and unfortunately they probably understand all to well... Most shelters are beyond capacity and unfortunately county shelters have to take in every animal that comes in their doors which means they have to create space somehow. Since many pit bulls are dog aggressive they do not do well in these types of settings and also pit bulls generally make up the majority of dogs in county shelters, therefore if you surrender your pit there is a good chance it will have to be euthanized. i'm not trying to be rude, just trying to explain to you why they probably told you that.

Why are your parents making you get rid of her? Do you have a crate for her? Could you pay a friend to keep her? Have you called around to local vets and kennels to see if they do long term boarding? Have you checked the classifieds for rooms to rent?
