And here I was ALMOST feeling bad about not letting my kids walk the dogs, lol. they ask all the time, but I never give in precisely because I am afraid of the dogs pulling the kids down the road toward a rabbit/squirrel/other kid/dog and then one of them getting hurt.

It astounds me how people expect to "get the kids a dog" or "get a dog for the kids" and then expect the kids to know how to properly train it. I think that attitude on the part of parents is why mu daughter got bit. The dog had no training and was just a nervous mess of mean, but the mother said she didn't have time to train it because of her job and parenting responsibilities so she had the kids doing it. Which they weren't because they are kids and not trained yet themselves!

Some people are ridiculous when it comes to children and dogs. I understand wanting to include the children, but to rely on them to take care of the dog is just plain ridiculous. Stupid lady

I had to get onto a kid the other day that ran out in front of a car after his dog. I tried to explain to him that no dog or animals life is worth you losing your own life. And that he could have been killed. If that car hit him. The dog got passed but the kid would have been hit if the car hadn't been able to stop. The dog wasn't leashed and I've seen this dog running lose a lot. Even the parents don't leash it.
I just don't think the parents ever taught him not to run out in front of cars after an animal. Its a scary world we live in.

OMG I am SO glad that wasn't me!! If it were, I'd have grabbed that little crumbsnatcher up by the nap of his neck, took him back to his momma & gave her a few choice words. I HATE it when kids run in the street or worse yet hang out there! It scares the tar out of me, I always think I'm going to hit one of those little ******s.

Blessings ...

Default Leaving a dog in the hands of a kid
I had a few experiences this week that really drove me nuts and got me thinking...

Last week at agility a new round of classes was starting so a whole bunch of new people showed up. About 15 minutes in a lady pulls in late with her HUGE dog (looked like a black lab/mastiff perhaps?) he was gorgeous. She also had her two kids with her who were maybe 8 and 10. The lady was so rude and obnoxious but her dog and kids were great. One lucky assistant got paired with Mrs.Sunshine to catch her up on what she had missed. They were practicing introducing the dog to the tire and I was standing right by them waiting for our turn to run through our course. The dog jumped through the tire and then started dry heaving and eventually threw up a stuffed animal! It looked like a beanie baby. There were a bunch of beads and a plush head. The trainer told the woman, "It looks like he just threw up a stuffed animal." and the woman responded "Well I was at work all day don't look at me!" and calls her kid over who couldn't have been more than 9 or 10 years old and starts screaming at the kid. She goes "Well obviously someone wasn't supervising the dog today!! Do you see what you did!!" !

The trainer was horrified. My turn came and I walked away but it looked like she was about to give her a piece of her mind. Who the hell leaves a little kid in charge of a 100 lb dog all day? I'm giving this woman the benefit of the doubt by assuming her kid was at least 10, he honestly looked younger than that.

So just as I am recovering from my horror, I am walking Socrates the next day and see a LITTLE kid rounding the corner with his mutt. The kid looked like he was probably 6. I kept waiting to see his parents come around the corner behind him and grab the leash when they saw another dog. But no...the dog starts pulling and drags the kid over to us. The dog was OK with Socrates but I made it very quick and just as I was walking away see a big golden retriever barrel around the corner with two little girls running behind him, one holding his leash. The girl yelled "OW!" and dropped the leash and the dog charged us growling. He smashed into Socrates and a couple growls were exchanged but I grabbed the golden's leash and got them separated very quickly. Socrates was completely fine. He stood still and kept looking at me like he was scared and the golden was still trying to go for him. The little boy started running away and the dog started running after him. The little girl grabbed the leash from me and I told her her puppy was way too strong for her and she shouldn't walk him alone and she looked really embarrassed and ran off. Had I not been afraid of a fight, I would have stuck around and tried to find out who their parents were so I could talk to them about it but it didn't even cross my mind at the moment. My only thought was get the hell out of there. As we were walking away I noticed Socrates head was bleeding. He got a minor scrape.

I can't even believe people's mentality when it comes to dogs. Who would ever leave their dogs in the hands of a little kid? It's insane!! I understand when a kid gets older and has learned how to handle a dog, allowing them to take it for a walk, etc... but that young? It's just crazy to me...CRAZY!

Because people are lazy. Those who don't have kids use dog parks. Need I say more?

Preach it.....
That's how Lily and I got charged. We were walking and a girl (young, under 10), was out with her dog, a HUGE labx. The dog starts stalking us growling, and the girl is just standing there saying "Maddie no, no". I told her to get her parents, that if she does not retrieve her dog I will kick it. I told her this flat out. She just keeps standing there yelling at her dog, no parents in sight. I kicked it in the head as soon as it got in range, and it scampered off. And I stood there until she put it inside.
Meanwhile on the other side of the street there is the 5 year old girl telling me how every time her dog bites her her mom puts the dog outside, and by outside I mean I see this 5lb chihuahua standing in the middle of the street at least once a week. First off, why is your 5 year old daughter outside by herself without supervision? I was talking to her for easily 10 minutes. There are a few sex offenders that live within a few blocks of here. Her mother better be damn glad I wasn't one of them. Secondly, who lets their child get bit CONTINUOUSLY and then rewards the dog when it happens!?
People are unbelievable, but at the same time, I almost expect it from today's dog-owning population.

True dat.

I've been dealing with a similar problem lately with the lady down the street who's collie seems to have a death wish, for both him and the little girl who walks him (and I've seen this dog drag her to the middle of the street).

i cant stand people like that. I will say this, why doesn't the training place have a rule about children handling dogs. I understand wanting to be involved in the training but I think they need to put a rule in place about the kids handling the dogs without an adult present.

If only there were laws about who should be allowed to have dogs, and more importantly who should be allowed to have children.

The woman was handling the dog, the kids were just there watching. The other incident happened down the road from my house.

Wow, what a horrible woman! Those poor kids and that dog...

I run into kids with dogs ALL the time. Worst was the time this giant Redbone Coonhound pulled loose from this litle girl that couldn't have been more than six or seven. I am sooooo grateful that dog ran up to Lily and not my friend's dog Lynley. That was a very, very close call.

I see this sort of thing all the time. I got a call today from a woman wanting training for her 200lb Mastiff because he took off after a squirrel and dragged her 6 YEAR OLD down the sidewalk and he got scraped up. I asked where she was, and she said she was "too busy cooking" to walk the dog. That size of a dog could shake water off himself and knock me to the ground if I wasn't careful!
I think I'm going to start giving Dog Owner Parenting Classes with my training...

Seems like stupidity & laziness have reached pandemic proportions. My area is overrun with kids & Bull Terrier X's on a bit of string. A neighbour, maybe 13 years old has a black & white Pitbull dog, still with jewels, a year old & probably close to 30kg (60lb). He's stunning but has zero training, non, nada. The young lady at best manages to slow him down when walking. she is making an effort but has very limited knowledge & resources, just hoping the dog will figure it out really. Their are a lot of young guys with pups too, buying into the whole tough thing, winding up & teasing their dogs over a few beers.
It's sick & sad, licence the owners if they want to take their dogs out in public & have done with it. To many toothy little time bombs owned by mouth breathers.
