Do Boxers fall under the "Pit Bull" category?

I guess what I am trying to ask is you know how people tend to generalize and put all sorts of dogs under the category of Pit Bull?
Well do people put boxers in the category?

Also what are the big differences between an:
American Pit Bull Terrier
American Bulldog
and a Boxer?

A child actually asked me this down at the shelter over the weekend and I really didn't have a good answer. All I could tell him is they were all different breeds with different traits. And they were all individual dogs with individual personalities. And when he pointed out that they all looked similar. I explained, just because they all look similar they were all bred for different reasons.

Then I sent him to talk to someone more knowledgable then me. The kid had a lot of questions. He is doing a project at school. And he picked the boxer, the bulldog, and the pit bull to talk about. He came down to the shelter to find information and pick a type of dog to do his project on and decided to do the differences in breeds. (right now at our shelter we have 2 American Bulldogs, 1 boxer and 2 pit bull mixes, which he found more interesting than the countless beagles, chihuahuas, and poodle mixes. He said he has a Boxer at home)

I thought it was a really neat topic. So I am hear to ask the same thing he asked me.

Thanks

I believe that boxers are considered a bulldog breed. I also believe that boxers possibly went into the making of the American Bulldog...

Boxers are definitely in the bully breed category, and people call boxers pit bulls all the time for some damn reason (I can tell the difference between the 2, but I also know my ass from a hole in the ground). Mostly the whole, medium sized muscular dog, short fur, biggish head thing.

The American Bulldog thing wouldn't surprise me.

Boxers would definitely fall into the high drive, high energy, need lots of training and guidance and control category that pit bulls are in too. I grew up with several. They are also dogs who aren't for the faint of heart, although it's more because of how hyper, strong and dumb they are.

If I remember correctly, Boxers were bred for bull baiting.

some people do seem to think boxers are pit bulls, and I've been asked if my dogs were boxers. SOME of the breeds I've herd referred to as a "pit bull" are boxers, American Bulldogs, American Bullies, AmStaffs, Staffy Bulls, APBT, Bull Terriers (and minis), Cane Corsos, Presas, Dogo Argentino, just to name some of them. People are stupid.....

yeah i guess?
surprisingly alot of people mistake a boxer for a pit bull! This lady was talking about this evil pit bull and when she saw a lady come with her 2 boxers shes like "Oh that pit bull looked just like those two, brown and black" she was referring to their brindle coats. I think they are so different in apperance!!

But alot of people just dont know their breeds! Gottie was even called a "rottweiler" on more than one occasion! http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/confused.png http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/lol.gif i dk how they came up with that

hahah

Boxers are from Germany, APBT's originate from the UK http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/wink.png
American bulldogs have been used as military dogs, but most commonly their work today is as catchdog [hog hunting].
The APBT is smaller than both breeds and has been used for many purposes in history.

Boxers do get mistaken as "pit bulls" from time to time by Joe Schmoe.

yea people are stupid, people will swear up and down that Goren is a boxer...his head is no where near boxer like, he has no lips hanging down or anything but yep many people have told me I don't know what I am talking about so if they say boxer...I say great dane/lab mix haha that gets them rolling >.<

thanks everyone. I asked this boy his motivation for this project and he said people often mistake his boxer for a "pit bull" and his best friend has an American Pit Bull Terrier that everyone thinks is an American Bulldog. (He is 14 by the way). I just thought it was a pretty big topic for a kid of his age to take on and I was impressed he was doing it

Sounds like me a few years ago! I've always been 'that girl who's obsessed with dogs' at school :P He sounds like he'll grow up to be very knowledgeable about our breeds.

Any dog with a short coat, muscular and with a big head people jump to 'pit bull'. That's pretty much it.

I don't know enough on the two other breeds to give you a good answer... I know American Bulldogs were bred for farm work and guarding. They also herd.

But I had at least three people tell me, about this dog, that I had a nice boxer:

I've also been asked if mine were Boxers.
Also been asked MANY times if they are related.

I read about a boxer owner who had the dog confiscated in Canada under BSL and the dog was facing death. Don't know how it resolved itself.

Kolokireo 08-09-2010 11:32 AM

Wow; I never would have guessed that people would mistake Boxers for APBTs.

It must be my obsession with drool. Nothing personal against Boxers; but one look in their face and the first thought that comes to my head is , "Now there's a face that's gonna spew allot of drool".

Look at a pit bull; first thought "No drool to speak of here". http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/biggrin.png

The faces look completely different. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/dunno.gif

Wetekemieluth 08-09-2010 03:04 PM

I can see where people mistake really crappy-bred Boxers as APBTs (or what the general public would assume to be APBTs.) I've seen breeders of Boxers here in Georgia where I had to question WHAT exactly they were.

If you put a well-bred Boxer, APBT, and American Bulldog beside one another, the general public would have an epiphany of how different they actually look.

Kubasarika 08-09-2010 03:27 PM

I own a pet sitting business and had a Boxer/ Lab mix sleep at my house. The parents are KNOWN to be these breeds. She stood next to my APBT and you couldn't tell the difference. Body structure and face were the same. It just shows that when you see the headline "Pitbull attacks..." it may not to be a pit at all!!!!
