Stinky or not?
I do not know it there is a thread on this or not but I figured I would ask and I have know doubt someone will tell me if there is a thread about it or not.
So, to the issue. I have met dogs that have no strong odor and that are rarely bathed and I have met dogs that have a strong odor that were just bathed. We have one of each. Our female is not a "stinker" but our male smells musty a few hours after we bathe him. He is very healthy. We feed him TOTW. We brush him several times a week but he still stinks. Do you have a dog that just plain stink? |
Could be from not drying him properly or a possible allergy causing him to stink or even some sort of skin issue. I know that when Mater was battling food allergies he stunk to high heaven.

How do you properly dry a dog? I rub him down with a towel after a bath but thats about it. He usually does zoomies for about 10 mins after a bath and is about dry when he is done. |
You will want to make sure he is completely dry all over the place - between his toes, legs, all folds, etc. Make sure that there is no moisture left after a bath.
What formula of TOTW are you feeding him? |

Hmm. I would try drying him better if that doesn't work then he might have some sort of environmental allergy. I would go ahead and have him tested if the drying him well doesn't work.

It is crazy how he is so different from our female. I realize they are 2 different breeds but she has slight allergies and does not have a strong odor at all and we only bath her once ever 3 or 4 months. |
You can test dogs at anytime. I wouldn't wait because if you can fix it now then why let him suffer and you be frustrated http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/wink.png

So its ok to start them on the allergy shots at such a young age? Seems a bit much for a pup.
|
How old is he?? I didn't say you had to do the allergy shots but you could still have him tested for allergies.
|
Oh...he is 6 months old. So just test him to see if he is allergic to anything I can prevent like food or detergant allergies? Did not think about that. I just assumed when they found out what he was allergic too, they would start shooting him up with allergy shots to get him "over" the allergy.
|
No, if you can eliminate it from his environment then they won't do allergy shots. The way my vet explained the allergy shot is that it will only work for a little while then they become allergic to it again. It's like us when we've been exposed to something too long we can be allergic to it - example, I never used to be allergic to horses but starting 2 years ago I did.

Have you had a skin scrap done? To see if it could be mange related?
|
Yeah. They did one when it got kinda bad. I have pictures of it when it got bad if you want to see. Has not been as bad since and that was about 3 months ago.
|
Yeah if you would mind that would be helpful to see.

He was a little red the day we took these pics and took him to the vet. He was crated for a little less than 7 hours while we were at work and we came home to him looking like this! He is cleared up now. But he will get really red if we don't wipe him down after being outside.

Definitely looks like an allergy and looked like he definitely was licking and biting himself. I'll dig up pics of Mater so you can compare.
