Default Military bans pits in san diego base??
my wife just heard from one of her good friends that the U.S. Military has passed a law against pit bulls in military houses. now her friend got this info from the show "PIT BOSS". Ive been looking on the internet trying to find more information because this would directly affect me being that im in the military in point mugu, ca. wich is about 3 1/2 hours away from san diego.

iif anyone can help me find this law so i can read it with my own eyes before anyone even thinks about taking my dog. I would greatly appreciate it.

Just like most military regs it depends on your post Commander or SGM. Even with regs not everything is the same from one post to the next or even one unit from the next. Just like some posts let you have pets in the barracks while others say none what so ever or you can just have fish. You can go directly to housing to see if they know or use your chain of command to find out. I saw that episode and someone mentioned it to me a while back about a poss pit ban on military posts but I didn't keep up with it since I'm no longer on one. But if I go back on active duty I'll have to look into that because I'm not giving up my boys. If it comes down to it,...move off post if there's not a state or county ban.

All military housing bans Pits, even when my ex-husband and I were stationed out in Italy, Pits were illegal in military housing there along with other breeds. I live in San Diego at the Lincoln military housing, from what I remember all the housing banned them, I had a over sized Beagle at my property one day, my friend came over and brought it, I got a notices on my door the next day that I had to remove the "Pit Bull" in 24 hours or be evicted! I had to bring the dogs AKC registration to the housing office with me to prove that he wasnt a Pit Bull!

Like I said before,...do some homework, don't just assume because every place isn't the same as the next. Either check with housing in person yourself or go to your post website under housing and see what the Regs are. I just googled Military Bans Pits and got quite a bit of info. As of Feb or Mar or '09 there was a military wide ban. I looked up Ft. Carson where I use to be and under housing Regs it just says;

Breeds: Fort Carson Chain of Command reserves the right to restrict certain breeds from being housed on Fort Carson.

U.S. Army Signed Pet Policy for Privatized Housing - Jan 09

But there's also a Grandfather clause in effect, if you had the dog before the ban you maybe exempt. But if you PCS it may or may not hold up.

Oh how I wish you would have found a more reputable site to use for your information. That anyone on this site actually goes to that site is frightening.

I dunno if I want people who are afraid of pitbulls to protect my country, I thought these guys were suppose to be strong and fearless.

Because if the military bans pit bulls, our soldiers aren't strong??

Military personnel are government property. If there have been incidents where dogs have caused problems that result in military personnel being unable to fulfill their duties, then they will ban the dogs.

There are also a lot of civilian contractors on military installations. The quick, simple solution to keeping them safe will be the one the government chooses. Doesn't matter if it has never happened, if someone up the chain of command thinks it could happen and would create a PR issue or compromise efficiency then it won't be allowed to happen.

With the government it rarely has anything to do with common sense, and what the brass decides should in no way reflect upon the courage of the troops.

What ever issues you may have with the website,...that's on you. Look it up for yourself and you'll see that info is correct. Get over yourself,...as long as the info is right what difference does it make where it comes from.

But the different site where you got the same info isn't dedicated to trying to destroy our dogs. Why send traffic to a website that thinks all pit bulls should be killed when you can get the same information from somewhere else that isn't promoting breed bans and the killing of pit bulls?

Dogbite is a horrible website and every time you click on it, you are adding google hits, making it more likely to come up when people google "pit bulls"

I lived off Base in Texas because they put out a Pitbull ban after someone supposedly got bit. but depending on your dog you may be able to get the vet to say its an American Bulldog mix or something and get away with it

Im in the army and they have had a bsl law on post since 2008. The only good thing is that if you had your dog on post before that took affect they have placed a grandfather clause. Now the only thing that sucks is if when I get stationed anywhere else I will have to live off post.

I already said,...I didn't know.
To the Rep find out from your Post and hopefully maybe you can get by on the Grandfather Claus. But just like every other pit bull ban there's a list that includes look a likes and mixes. Idk how strict they are or what they're doing in Cali but hopefully you can find a way to keep yours.

I checked with a friend currently serving in the Army and living in on base housing with his wife and children. He said the breed ban is in effect and that your dog is grandfathered in providing you did the proper paperwork before the cutoff date which is different at different posts. He also said that the grandfathering loses effect if you move off base and then move back on or if you get transferred. He said the best thing to do is have your dog listed through the vet as a mix of anything but the banned breeds and hope no one makes a complaint.

what i was told was that all "pit bull" types currently living on posts when the ord passed must have a temperment eval and becomes cgc cert and even after that can only remain till till 2012

I am not sure about the testing and papers needed and everything, but I can stand witness that this is happening. This is the exact way that I got Trinity, see I live in a big military area, (Va) We have every branch of the military here and this is why the former owner was forced to get rid of her. Alot of dogs are turning up at SPCA's, animal shelter and rescues around here. It is really sad knowing that all this is happening and the rescues around here are doing everything they can to try and save as many dogs as they can.
