( Didn't see a current thread on this, but if anyone else does feel free to bump it up here. )
I love to hear these kinds of stories. Mine is long and kind of boring but I can't tell a short story if I tried to. lol ![]() We got our only dog Keoki from an animal shelter about two years ago. He was basically going to get PTS that day or the day after. We (my sister and I, at 17 and 14, got to "pick" out the dog we wanted) initially knew we wanted a pit bull type dog but we had only one real qualification and that was the dog had to be decent with cats because we had several at that time and always plan on having a few cats at any given time. She secretly wanted a white/ light colored puppy no more than 3 or 4 months old and I just wanted a rescue dog with looks being irrelevant. So we get into the kennel area and it's totally overwhelming. The dogs are all in an uproar because they want out of the kennels like usual or want to get to the dog next to them, except for one dog in the second kennel. He didn't move at all and was still laying peacefully on his little blanket at the back of his kennel. When I went up to the kennel he walked over sniffed my hand and gave me sad eyes. Pretty much an immediate connection kind of thing where I just knew he would be the right dog and I didn't need to look anymore. I knew right when I saw him that I was going to get him, but I wanted someone else in my family to say something first. Of course my sister didn't see her dream dog at the shelter (lol) and thought we should try another shelter so I finally spoke up and basically told them that we were getting "Butters" the 5 month old pit mix, pending a cat test of course. They basically agreed with me because they were sick of looking and generally trust my judgment. Everyone at the shelter seemed to think we were nuts for wanting the dog. I guess they figured we wouldn't be able to handle the dog and his apparent issues, maybe they thought we were going to return him or something. The whole thing was strange. They had no paper work for him at all- just said that he had been seized from outside a property. At first they told us he wasn't neutered and that we couldn't take him home that day, but then they said he was neutered. They also said he had been dewormed already- two nights later he vomited a LIVE worm on my pillow. The staff wasn't able to walk him because he was terrified of being outside and had sores/ fly bites on his footpads and legs. Although he was technically a "puppy" we only had to pay the cheaper adult dog price. They even gave us a 60 day guarantee that if he died because "he may have parvo, but we aren't sure"- we could get another dog for free. Never had I ever heard of something like that. Like I said- weird. But he passed the cat test with flying colors and he went home with us after being carried to the car- which was easy since he was pretty tiny: ![]() So he came home and surprised everyone by being house trained, crate trained, and learning commands in less than a week. Being able to go for walks and proper socialization for him to feel comfortable in any situation took about two months. Great dog, probably the best dog I have ever owned or will own. SO glad we took a chance with that one. Here he is now: ![]() |

That's a great story!
I got Piper from a shelter in my area. We had picked out 3 dogs before her but since we could only take a dog home on a weekend out picks kept getting taken since they didn't hold dogs. Piper was our fourth choice. Come friday when we went to pick her up I was sure she'd be gone too. But she was still there waiting for us. I didn't know at the time that she was a pitt mix and didn't figure it out for a couple months when I started researching online. Piper then ![]() ![]() |

Ike I got from a breeder in Ypsilanti. I had a dog that was HA and had to be euthanized. We were looking at rescues and shelters, but the local shelters didn't have any dogs that struck my fancy and the rescues were freaking crazy to deal with. After 3 months or so my husband and I were driving and I mentioned I heard an AB breeder had a litter and they were being offered for about the same price rescues charge. The hubby said to call him and I did first thing the next morning. Spent an hour on the phone and then took the kids out there with me to meet the parents and the pups. We picked Ike and the rest is history. Adore him, he's just everything I hoped for when I met his parents
![]() Rita was named Princess and belonged to my brother. He got her from a breeder who had a litter the mother was killing at 3 weeks old and he had to get them out fast since he was a shitty BYB and wasn't prepared to hand feed the pups while weaning them. My brothers fiancee wanted her and fed her til she could be weaned. They had her for a bit and loved her, but she was plagued by ear infection that they didn't have the money to treat, so they started trying to find her a home at about 6- 8 months old. My husband kept saying "no" and "Hellz no!" When she was 1.5 years old my brother had to move and was going to have to take her and another dog of his to the pound because he couldn't find anyone to take them and he had lost his home and was forced to move and rent. ( believe me, he tried and he was out of time for the move) He would only be able to take 2 of his 4 dogs with him and he chose Sid and Trinity. I casually mentioned this to the hubby, fully expecting a negative response, but he said ok. We took Princess and renamed her Rita and a friend took the other dog who is now named Petey. My "free dog" has cost a pretty penny in vet bills, but she is so awesome she's worth it. |

Sug came from a local humane society where she had been for nearly a year before we found her.
She had shown up at around 7 months of age, in heat, beaten up, and heart-worm positive. From what I've been told, most of the employees didn't think that she would make it. She went through 3 foster homes, which amazes me because she's been picture perfect with us. I think most of it was because of her heart-worm treatment, though because she had to be crated for such a long time. She also had one adopter before us. The shelter apparently told them it was a bad idea because of their current dog, but they did it anyways. Sug was back a week later after having nearly killed their other dog. From what we've seen, the other dog must have REALLY pushed Sug because she's been in a couple of situations with us where she could have really lashed out at another dog and has been a big goober instead. So, at the shelter is where she sat until we found her on Petfinder. She would never have gotten a second look from me if it wasn't for her ears simply because I didn't want an APBT. We were looking for an American Bulldog. So, despite the shelters warnings that she was possibly dog aggressive, and would kill my parrot at first chance, we brought her home anyways. Her interest in my parrots and other critters was more of a "I've never seen one of those before" obsessions because she's perfectly fine with them now. She's become friends with Fatty the squirrel. As of next Sunday, she will have been with us for a year, and she's been perfect. We couldn't have asked for much better. ---------- Post added at 10:04 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:58 AM ---------- Sorry, almost forgot... a few pix Shelter photo: ![]() When we went to see her: ![]() Her about 2 weeks ago: ![]() |

I got Puck off craigslist. I met quite a few dogs at shelters and from cl people but none clicked, I was also pretty adamant about wanting a 'pit bull or pit mix' not an AmBully or larger breed mixed in there. The owner and his girlfriend had had a second accidental litter and put an ad out to screen people about 2 weeks after the pups were born so they would have homes lined up for them.
I went up to meet them when the puppies were 3 weeks old and Puck picked me, waddling from his whelping area across the room to me to put his head on my lap over and over after I kept putting him back. In other words he was a pushy little twerp even then. ![]() Because they were being fed not so good food and didn't have a very clean whelping area, only fed twice a day and not really going to be socialized or taken to the vet I convinced the owners to let me take him at just shy of 5 weeks so I could get his parvo done early deworm him and put him on premium food and start potty training in a bigger area with a sleeping, feeding, playing and potty set up. I also referred them to Out of the Pits who do free spay neuter for pit bulls in Albany which they have since done with both of their dogs. They love their dogs and were great people but were in way over their heads, we keep in touch and it was the best 200$ I have ever spent on a dog. So far vet bills have been minimal since I vaccinate and deworm at home, maybe 60$ for his upset tummy when he first got here probably from the stress of moving as the vet couldn't find anything wrong with his fecal. He's due for his rabies and microchipping and I am waiting until 6 months or maybe a year to neuter. I wanted a pup I could train to be a service dog for myself but as Puck gets older I realize that probably isn't going to happen as he is simply too high energy and vocal when he wants attention from everyone. Maybe he'll mellow out as he gets a little older, we'll see. |

I am new to the board. We had a pit mix from the rescue for 11 years and lost her to kidney failure last year (a dog of a lifetime). I wanted another dog and we agreed it would be another rescue dog. After numerous trips to the humane socitities in the area, my husband suggested we look for a puppy (thinking it would buy him some more time as he was not quite ready for another dog). Needless to say that was Sunday and by Monday evening we had Roxi!!
Not sure how to add photos. |

Whew, this might take a while
![]() GYPSY: Gypsy originally came from a breeder in Seattle, Washington. One of my ex's roommates got her and her sister, and brought them home with them to Rathdrum, Idaho. They had them for two weeks, and then decided they didn't want any dogs. They called me, since I was doing 'rescue' at the time, and they knew how much I loved dogs. Since I had Lucy (ACD mix--3 years old at the time) and my ex's puppy Keevah (Alaskan Malamute--12 weeks at the time) I told them no, I couldn't take them. Then, after thinking on it for a while (I think maybe twenty minutes passed ![]() So after work that day, my ex drove me over there to pick up the pup. They were keeping them in an x-pen in the garage, and they asked me which one I wanted. I shrugged--it didn't matter, I wasn't keeping it. First they handed me the smaller of the two, who had white legs and more white on her face. Her name was Angel. After we chatted for a while, and the ex and I were walking back to the car, one of the roommates ran out of the garage with the other puppy and said they changed their mind. They wanted to keep Angel and so, I got the puppy named Bambi. I will be honest, at the time I new zilch about pit bulls. I barely only knew what was on the news--baby eating monsters, etc. etc. So I was a bit leery of having this ferocious, 11lb nine week old beast in my home. I immediately put an ad in the paper, fliers up at the feed stores, telling about a cute, ADBA papered apbt puppy for adoption. I had so many people call and come to see her in the first two weeks, and all of them gave me the chills. They weren't the type of people I'd want to give a pet rock to, much less a puppy. So then I started researching the breed and finding out that they were really nice dogs. And then I started thinking about how it would feel without her (I never could bring myself to call her 'Bambi'. So for the first two weeks she was with me, I just called her puppy or little girl.) I was really, really attached to her. So I gave it up. Her forever home was with me. She already knew that at this point in time, and had settled in beautifully. She was just waiting on me. I chose her name, in all my uncreativity, by naming her after my Granny's old Rat Terrier--Gypsy Rose Lee. So, now, nearly six years later, I have never, ever regretted a moment. Gypsy is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Here she is just a little while after I brought her home--in a home made hand stitched ghetto fleece jacket ![]() ![]() And now. ![]() MEXICO: Mexi came along when I was living in New Mexico for a brief interlude. I had Gypsy, who was about 1.5 years old or so, and Lucy, who was 4 or so. I was out walking Lucy through town when I spotted this little puppy on the road. She was nine or ten weeks old. She was all bones, splotchy fur, and sick, sick, sick. So, I caught her, and carried her the mile walk home. I didn't expect her to survive, honestly. She was so little, so emaciated, and so covered in fleas and ticks I just didn't see her pulling through. She was a little wild and free coyote wannabe, so she wasn't so happy about the human contact. I set up a wire crate and covered it with a blanket so it was dark and quiet, and she was quite happy to be in there. After a day of multiple small meals and constant supply of water, she really started perking up. After three days, I gave her a flea and tick dip and pulled all the little buggers off of her. Then we made a trip to the vet, to get a parvo test and a general check up. She tested negative for parvo, thank God, and was just proclaimed vastly underweight, but otherwise healthy. I tried for a while to get her into rescue, but since she was semi-wild and had the tendency to bite out of her fear, no one was interested (can't blame them, stray puppies and dogs are a dime a dozen around here). I named her Mexico, since I found her in New Mexico ![]() When she was four months old I took her to be spayed and they did the pre-op blood work and discovered that she had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever--which totally explained a lot of her issues. She was on medication for a while, and she started looking better. Mexi is now about 4.5 years old and doing very well. She has come SUCH a long way since she was that scrawny, terrified little puppy. She is a very sweet dog, and believe it or not, from her fear biting start, she is now a very, very gentle dog. Mexi then: ![]() Mexi now: ![]() Umah: I bought Umah from a breeder in Oregon when she was about five months old. Not much else to say on it ![]() Umah then: ![]() Umah now: ![]() Marsha: I adopted Marsha from the animal control in Gallup, NM. We were in there just browsing and I seen her squishy little face, and it was love at first site. She growled at me, and I melted. I adopted her with the intention of finding her a good placement somewhere else. Gallup AC isn't known for doing home checks, or anything else to insure the dogs are going to good homes--they only care if you have the money to pay at the time. Anyway, I liked Marsha way too much. Even my Mom was trying to convince me to keep her! ![]() Its been a couple of years now, and even though Marsha is still a little bratface, I love her and she fits in well here. Marsha then: ![]() Marsha now: ![]() Hoss: Hoss showed up on my parent's property last year. He was pretty banged up and thin, and obviously looking for a place to rest his poor body. My Dad, who normally just chases strays off no matter what, actually caught him and put him in the dog kennel. My Mom called me to let me know about him, and she said that he looked like he was going to die. I was at work at the time, and wouldn't be able to get home for hours. I just told her to give him a little food and some water, and let him alone. When I got home, he wasn't in as bad of shape as I thought he would be due to my Mom's description...but he was still in really rough shape. He needed vet care ASAP, that was for sure. With the help of very generous friends, online and offline, we managed to get him in the very next day to have everything taken care of. I didn't want to keep him at the time. I had four dogs already, and I was already stretched pretty thin on time, between them and work. I wanted to get him healthy then find a breed savvy rescue to take him in. I had e-mailed several rescues with no response. I don't remember how long it was that I had him when I took him in to have his legs looked at. He was always lame, limping and gimping around, and his structure was shot all to hell. When I first took him in, they told me nerve damage. A while later, we had x-rays done and it turned out he has osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in his forelegs and left shoulder. After this discovery, and also knowing that his time was limited, I decided he would stay here to finish out his life. I love him to death, and he is a very good dog. Him being DA makes things a bit more tricky, but we still manage to get his walk in just about every day, and if we can't do the walk, we always spend a couple hours before bed time chilling on the couch watching movies together. It'll be a year in October. Hoss then: ![]() Hoss now: ![]() |

One of my favorite storys is how we came to get Sox. My husband has multiple friends with registered Bulldogs. Some are very capable and great, some not so much.
Well there was this one guy that seemed to have a penchant for staying in trouble and he really did have some well bred dogs too. My husband came home and told me all about this gorgeous dog that this guy had and that the dude didn't even have him on a chain or anything. I commented on how dumbazz the guy was and forgot about it. I think Sox must have been about 9 months old about then. Well fast forward several months. We were sitting in the kitchen entertaining some more Bulldog friends when the dumazz guy calls and wants to know if we want to buy Sox?!? Hmmmm, Husband says this boy is really gorgeous and well bred too. Ok, I will bite. Bring him over for me to see for myself. He brings Sox over, he had a huge hole in his lip where another dog had attacked him and needed a bath severely but YES I wanted him!! I gave him $300 and got the neatest Bulldog in the world. Makes a model housedog, loves everyone, puppies, kittens you name it, and is UBER DA to boot now. His DA kicked in several months after we got him, and I guess he was just a late bloomer. I don't regret buying him for one minute. I am fairly sure he would have been injured badly where he was because he was around so many DA dogs and wasn't DA as yet. That dumazz kicks himself on a regular basis these days. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Hobie- Hobie came to me at 9 months old. He had never seen a collar or worn a leash..had been in the car a total of 2 times in his life. Yeah..he was horrid. I got him from my dad's friend who got him from another mutual friend that bred the litter. I've had him ever since. He will be 11 this year.
Now- ![]() Red- I got Red from a breeder here locally. We(my Ex and I) had Hobie and he wanted a dog of his own. He wanted a GSD, Aussie, APBT or Rottie. I was looking through the paper and came across an ad for ASTs. I went and looked at them with a friend and told the Ex that they were some cute puppies, it had to be a female and he wanted to pick it, that was fine...afterall she was HIS dog. He chose Red over a smut colored bitch. I liked Red's temperament and drives. The breeder gave her to us as he had, had 1/2 the litter stolen when they were young. She came with AKC papers as well as UKC and *gag* AAPBA papers. Anyway, when the ex and I broke up 3 months later, he said he didn't want the dog. So, Red came to live with me and grandma. I've had her ever since, she has been to hell and back with me and I love her to death with all her faults and idiosyncrasies. Now- ![]() Judge- Judge was bought after Red had to be retired from Schutzhund. He came from a member of my Schutzhund group and a friend. I watched her dogs for years and finally I had the chance to own one. Judge was pick of the litter and is my heart dog. That dog would do anything for me. I actually helped place Judge's littermates as well, I vouched for a friend at the time to get the Plush Coat bitch and another club member took the 2nd pick bitch out of the litter after seeing them evaluated when I got Judge. He was bought for the sole purpose of working a dog in bitesports. Then- ![]() Now- ![]() |

Socrates was at an inner city pound that was at max capacity with 30 'pits' (that's how they were labeled). We went up there just to take a look but didn't plan on actually adopting for a while. While we were there one of the officers was telling us that they put down numerous dogs each week because they are just constantly bringing more in. We decided we would talk about and come back in a week if we decided we were ready for a dog. We went back and immediately went to a kennel where we had seen a dog that we felt a connection with. He was gone but Socrates was in his place. He was sitting so quietly while everyone else was barking. I squatted down by his kennel and he came to the gate wagging his tail so hard against the fence and I just fell in love. I had 4 in mind that I was interested in but he stood apart from the rest. We went to the desk and asked to meet #746 (or 764 don't really remember lol) and the officers face lit up. He told us he was found as a stray a few weeks prior and was the sweetest dog there hands down. We didn't even meet the other dogs because they informed us of some of the issues they had, and after meeting Socrates, we didn't have to. That day, the officer signed the papers but said he couldn't come home with us until he was neutered.
Then the fun began...they NEVER answer the phone. I drove up there 45 mins 2 times a week for 4 weeks trying to get someone to get this dog a neutering apt. In that time he was attacked by another dog and seriously beat up, and quarantined for 3 weeks before they got him to a vet. I was furious but I could not abandon him...I already felt like he was mine. They finally got sick of me and made an apt with a vet they didn't have a contract with because their vet was on vacation FOR A MONTH and they weren't sending out ANY DOGS!! A month later I pick Socrates up at the most filthy disgusting vet's office I've ever seen. They didn't give us ANY instructions on how to care for him after his neuter or anything, just a couple pills and a "good luck". We left with him and he was sedated but so excited that he was just falling over from his tail wagging so fast. They told us he was over a year but he was so obviously a pup. He was probably about 7-8 months with NO training at all but he picked it up sooo fast. Plus he was a cuddle bug from minute 1 so we loved him from the get-go. Socrates at the pound ![]() First night home ![]() ![]() First bone ![]() ![]() Him now...pretty much the same just 10 lbs heavier lol ![]() |

DH had Rosie before I met him. As a young puppy, she has been attacked or used for bait and left outside a vet clinic. The vet clinic had posted a notice on a website saying the needed someone to foster her or she's be PTS. DH agreed to foster her....that was 5 years ago. He said within 5 minutes of her being in his truck he had failed as a foster parent. Complete with drain tubes & stitches all over, her tail couldn't stop wagging, and she couldn't stop smiling...and she is still wagging & smiling today. Only she has become 'my' dog. She still loves DH, but I'm her person.
![]() ![]() ![]() We got Nick about 1 1/2 years ago. We were kind of talking about getting another dog, kind of looking but not real serious. I saw an ad on CL saying someone had a 'pit bull' that needed a new home. I showed DH the pics and he said to email them. Turned out, the ad was posted by a vet tech from a local clinic. Someone had brought Nick in a few months prior because they were leaving the country. He had gotten sick while at the clinic, also gotten wormed, neutered, etc. Someone was going to adopt him, paid all his medical bills, etc, then backed out. They were getting desperate to find him a home. DH took Rosie to the clinic to see if they'd get along, and the rest is history. At first, Nick was too weak from being sick to care at all about Rosie. But the time he's gained his strength back, they were fast friends. When we first got him in Oct 2008 ![]() ![]() He was too weak to play tug, so Rosie drug him around the house. ![]() He pretty much slept for 2 solid weeks ![]() Now the two of them are best friend and play all the time ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I adopted my pit bull mix named Gottie from the shelter about a year and a half ago. He was two years old at the time.
Gottie caught my eye when i was on the shelter's page but I didnt want another male dog. I was going to try and find a female dog. My family went to go check out the dogs. almost all the females that i was intrested in was either not good with other dogs or kids. Which wasnt what we were looking for. So I finally said can I see Gottie. He came out everyone agreed he was cute and he was really responsive and playing. We were a little unsure though b.c. he had been in the shelter for about a year and had no known history. I asked why had him been in the shelter for so long, aside from the fact of his breed and being black (cause black dogs dont get adopted out as much either), she said that he was shy around people. Which was very surprising for us because he was totally fine with us trying to play with us. But we couldnt adopt him that day b.c we were goin to go on vacation in 2 days. So when we came back, we tried to go back to the shelter but the shelter is an hour away and there was traffic on the road and it was snowing and we called the shelter asking if there was a short-cut. She sent us in a totally different direction. So we couldnt get him then either ![]() Finally the next day I went to go pick him up from the shelter and evaluate him once again and hopefully adopt him. When they brought him out he was acting like i was his long lost friend! he jumped on me he kept kissing me! its like he knew!! ![]() ![]() |

well I have 2 stories I guess, I don't think they are very entertaining but here ya go, Goren came from Caring Paws Rescue and was original called Toe, I did not think it suited him, he was labeled as an American Staff. Terrier (I still think he is probably more something else than "pit bull") I got him at 14 weeks old, he was 20 lbs. The 1st time I saw him was on petfinder, I went to petsmart to look at a APBT puppy that might be there, but he was not and Toe was there instead (did not expect this rescue to be there) I payed 100$ and got him that day.
http://www.caringpawsrescue.org/success%20stories.html this link is the photo I saw 1st of him. He road on my lap the 45 mins on the way home, at the time I did not know the differences in kibbles, I stopped at Rural King (a feed store) and picked up some Diamond puppy (total random luck) eventually I had him on beniful (before I knew better) and then back to Diamond but then natural before he was 8 months old. He is a great dog, so far the best I have ever owned, very obedient, at first I thought he was reactive but not I find out I was being over cautious and he is just very intense play, if I give him a little slack he will play bow at almost any dog around. well here is a shot from the 1st day we got him he was very scared after I got him home ![]() ![]() this is my fiance holding him about a week or two later ![]() at about 6 months, you can now see he loves it with us ![]() ![]() and this was Sat. when he graduated beginner OB class ![]() ok now for my brand new story, lets take a short trip back to Thursday the 27th of May. My fiance calls me on his 1st break at work and tells me how there is a person that posted they had puppies they were GIVING away at 6 weeks of age, GSD/Amer. Staff. Terrier mixes, they have 5 females and 1 male, 2 with blue markings and 4 black. I have been telling him for about 2 months that I want a female puppy so we can get girly things for her and so I am not the only girl in the house (and because I just want a puppy and another companion). Well I talk him into calling them that night, and they say they have 5 left! well we ask them when is a good time to go see them and they say Saturday. We are excited because since Goren is Graduating OB class my fiance already schedualed that day off. We get done with the class and take a 45 min ride home from class before we call them. My fiance calls and they say they have 4 left! Well we book it another 45 min.s to there house, get there and meet the mom, she is an absolute doll (wish I would have remembered to grab my camera out of the car to take photos of the mom and dad) we ask about how the litter came about, was it planned or anything, they say there female which is the GSD is 10 years old and not spayed because she has NEVER let a male mount her before. She has killed a few dogs that got close to her chain spot during her heats, very DA to male dogs. Well she let there new 1 year old at the time Amer. Staff. Terrier mix mount her, they were VERY surprised and that is why they are not charging or anything for the pups. The pups were all very good pets, none were dominant none were scared of humans or dogs, we spent about an hour with the 4 females with Goren to see what one would work best, we did not go to get a pup but to see if we wanted one, and if we did we were going to get it. We ended up with Lola (they had not named them because they did not want to be more attached than they already were to them). We asked what they were feeding the pups, they said Olroy (YUK) so I picked up the smallest bag that I could get and a food and water bowl (ours we have are to big for her right now) and went to rural king for a back of diamond puppy (to get the diamond natural puppy I have to drive 35 miles and hope they have it in, its about a 40% chance they would have regular and I figured at least its better than olroy lol) She is 7 weeks old TODAY. She has really started to show er personality now that she is getting to know us better, she has been eating the kibble wet (tried it dry as they were feeding and she kept dropping it so I figure she should get it wet a little bit longer) she has been out with Goren a bit, and she obviously thinks Goren is a female because she tries to suckle him ![]() well now for a few photos, sorry I don't have more or the ones I took with Goren and her to really see her size (she weighs less than a Gallon of milk it feels) my computer is not liking to upload to photobucket right now she will go to the vet just as soon as I can set an appointment (they are closed today) ![]() ![]() ![]() |
