Disappointing

I do not like any of her other books, but I have been hearing about how Stephanie Meyer's The Host is much different from the mediocre Twilight Saga, so I decided to see for myself and read it. Anyway, I'm nearly done with it and am reading page 530-something when I noticed a reference to pit bulls. It was in an analogy.. The narrator was explaining how this other character's name was inappropriate for her personality, and was followed by the remark "like naming a pit bull Fluffy". It's really nothing to post a new thread about I guess.. Just annoyed me to see the stereotype perpetuated some more, especially through a book/author with a large fanbase.

Well to me since a pit bull is NOT fluffy, that would be a true statement.

well at least mine ain't fluffy.

BPitt 05-06-2010 01:43 AM

Mine aren't fluffy either. Good thing because I couldn't handle all that hair. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/lol.gif

I do like that book though.

tsaaapla 05-06-2010 01:44 AM

I can agree with the analogy, lol. But I know what you mean.

One of my favorite authors, I can't think of her name right now, but anyway. In one of her books, the main character and her wolf companion were kidnapped, and the wolf, named Blind Seer, was thrown into a pit to fight with pit bulls. The author's description of the pit bulls was very unflattering and she made them out to be slavering monsters, who wanted to kill the main character, Fire Keeper, more than they wanted to fight with Blind Seer.

I was really disappointed.

hernkingAnank 05-06-2010 01:47 AM

Hold on i thought i read that whole series i don't remember that.

I forget the author's name too.

tsaaapla 05-06-2010 01:49 AM

I'm pretty sure its that same author. In the...third book I think, the one before they went to that island with the leopard.

hernkingAnank 05-06-2010 01:52 AM

Hmm, let's see... in the third one, is that the one where they had the war and they had to go back to their pack? Or is that the second one?

tsaaapla 05-06-2010 01:59 AM

Lmao, no clue. I'm probably wrong on the book number, its been so long since I've read those books.

chppjdf 05-06-2010 02:02 AM

Yeah, they're not fluffy.. Not that I'm aware of, anyway, lol. But anyone reading it will know the name isn't referring to actual physical qualities, and will percieve it as irony.. Which is what it is meant to be, and it makes me feel silly because I was upset about it for a couple minutes, lmao.

BPitt 05-06-2010 02:03 AM

I do not even think I caught that line. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/lol.gif

hernkingAnank 05-06-2010 02:37 AM

Yeah, don't be upset about it... they are not "fluffy" in any sense of the word so yeah naming a pit bull fluffy would be like naming your daughter William.

gambleingsites 05-06-2010 02:44 AM

I had an eel once named fluffy...

slimsex 05-06-2010 02:44 AM

If you had a really fat pit bull, the name would work.

hernkingAnank 05-06-2010 02:46 AM

Triple D you are always causin trouble ain't you? Na OMG that would be FATTY not FLUFFY.

gambleingsites 05-06-2010 02:52 AM

Shakaz, that's what I'm here for. But I really did have Fluffy. He was gray, ugly and used to eat goldfish.

hernkingAnank 05-06-2010 03:07 AM

Wow, sounds uuummmm great. LMAO

Bridgester 05-06-2010 03:11 AM

I would name a Pit Bull "Fluffy" but then again I just find it funny... I could just see peoples reactions... what is her name... and I say fluffy and they look at me like ummm ok????

Skete 05-06-2010 03:24 AM

well it isnt as bad as a anology I heard. Some guy talking about prisioners in jail then putting them in society he put it like this "is like putting 2 pitbulls in the ring and then putting them around people". I still don't understand what he meant by it.

hernkingAnank 06-05-2010 02:43 PM

Okay, if THAT analogy was put in a book, youknow, I could see getting mad about. I THINK I understand what he was trying to say but it's still a little vague I'd have to spend more time than I'm willing to to actually get it.

LongaDonga 06-05-2010 02:51 PM

lol, my husband's APBT is named Precious. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png

And we used to have a Chow named Fuzzy Head since when his groomer gave him his yearly clip, she always cut him really close everywhere but left this his head fuzzy (hence the name). His head looked like a dandelion poof! http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/lol.gif

And yes, before anyone says anything, I know you're not supposed to clip a Chow. But the guy from whom we rescued him from never brushed him! http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/mad.png When we got him, we had to have him clipped b/c he was so badly matted. Because of where he came from, Fuzzy Head wasn't accustomed to brushing, so for our ease of mind & his ease of mind, we just kept him clipped.

Blessings ...
