Bubba got into a scuffle today!

I took Bubba to this old park (?) today. It's owned by Rohm & Hoss chemical company. Basically it's about 40 acres of old baseball fields on the river where people go to fish and drink and walk dogs.
When I parked the car a guy on a mini bike with 3 dogs running behind him rode by. One dog came over to the car and checked out Bubba before we got out. No problem. We got out of the car and they checked each other out and each went their own way.
We walked around for awhile and met a female mutt. They both wanted to play so I let him off leash and they chased each other around and played about 10 minutes. The owner had to leave so I leashed Bubba and continued on our way.
We walked around some more when 2 dogs off leash came over and started cheking out Bubba. All was ok until this small Collie came over. Because of the long hair I didn't know that it was an intact male. I don't know who started it but all of a sudden they went at it!
I was worried Bubba was going to hurt that dog but instead Bubba body slammed the dog and pinned it to the ground and held him there. I immediately pulled him off and the Collie got up and walked to the owners who were standind about 50 feet away drinking beer by their van.
They saw the whole thing and figured their dog started it because it was intact. I went over and they had 5 males, 2 intact, all off leash. Bubba and the Collie stood by each other and were fine now. I didn't realize it at 1st but the Collie was missing a front leg.
We walked away and enjoyed the rest of the day.
I've seen Bubba pin another dog at play before. I was wondering why he did that instead of going for the throat. Any thoughts?

As much as it's not fair, i don't take my dogs anywhere I think irresponsible owners will have their dogs unleashed, which includes the amazing walking paths in our neighborhood which attracted us to this neighborhood in the first place because we thought it would be a great place to walk the dogs. After one off leash dog charged our dogs and attacked my husband who threw himself in front of our dogs, we don't walk our dogs anymore.

To the OP. It seems to me like Bubba didn't want to fight, he was trying to protect himself, not start a fight. But I wasn't there so I don't know.

merloermfgj 11-05-2010 06:19 AM

That's a shame. I feel sorry for your dogs.
Bubba's been attacked 3 times. The 1st 2 times we were walking through the neighborhood and people opened their front door and their pit ran out and attacked.
I can't stop walking him because something MIGHT happen.

You may be right. I thought it was in his blood to fight.
He did fight back the 1st 2 times.

He is a good example that pitbulls aren't vicious killers always out for a fight http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/wink.png Congrats on getting such a great dog! He sounds like a great example of what a pet pit should be like.

Marz actually did this once, although she pinned the dog down BY the throat. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/lol.gif Stupid dog lept off of a two story balcony and came at us when Daemon was just a baby in a buggy. I was trying to keep the baby safe and Marz away from the dog by blocking them, but once the dog nipped me in the leg, Marz had enough and pinned the dog by the throat to the ground. Of course the dog screamed bloody murder but she didn't even break the skin, but she sure wasn't letting him up no matter how much of a fuss he kicked up. Finally some guy driving by stopped his car to help. Marz let go of the dog right away and let buddy take him to his house. I think if the other dog was actually hurting her, she would have upped her reaction a bit. I think she just knew she had him beat. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/lol.gif

I dont either.....that is why the treadmill was invented, my dogs get more exercise than most dogs do and its all done safely within the confines of my property.

I'm going to assume you live somewhere where you own a good amount of land for a dog to be on. I do not, I have a front yard and a back yard, neither are big. For someone that lives the way I do, keeping your dog in the house is terrible.

Just because its "in his blood" don't mean he will do it. Many APBT's are curs. I own an APBT named Taz, and he is the most DA dog I've ever met, hes controllable and I take him anywhere without worry, but he thinks fighting is a game. His sister, Pink, would be a cur, she has ran from fights, and curled in a ball and cried, but shes still an APBT.

Woah, I'm surprised at how many don't walk their dogs. I know here, there's no way you can just not walk your dog without it being unsocialized and fat. I wish I could just keep my dogs at home without feeling bad.

I love my treadmill too but thankfully the 'neighborhood' (it's the middle of nowhere so not really populated) dogs are all fenced or on leashes. I can count on one hand the number of strange dogs (not the 3 that live in my building) I have seen walking on the street with their owners in the past 2.5 years! If my dog were 9or becomes) DA or HA there would be no walking regardless.

I walk my pup every day and thank god without incident...one close call but thats all it was. my dog would go crazy if he wasnt able to go for walks.

I do own 2 acres which is plenty of room for the dogs to run but that has little to do with walking the dogs, the treadmills are in my garage now but they use to be up in my bedroom. A treadmill hardly takes up any space at all, there is no weather to deal with and you can put them on it at anytime during the day.

Trying to understand here.... YOUR dog has been attacked 3 times and you feel SORRY for HIS dogs??? Does not compute.

I'm glad Bubba wasn't hurt. I agree that he didn't want to fight, but he did want to let the dog know that he wasn't going to take any crap from him. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/tongue.png

I wonder if dogs can sense if another dog has a disability, like missing a leg. I don't know if Bubba knew the dog was only a 3 legged dog, but maybe so. At any rate, I'm glad that everything turned out fine.

I wish I could get Mollie on my treadmill, she's terrified of it. I can get Bella on it, but just for a minute and then she's ready to get off. I need to try to increase the time. I don't think Mollie will ever get close to it. If she hears it, she ducks tail and runs to the bedroom to hide. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/lol.gif

What is it with freaking Collies?! They're slowly making their way up my sh*t list.

Lucy will pin a dog rather than fight. The first time was at the daycare (dog) I worked at. She went up to a female dog (I think it was a pit/lab mix) and play bowed. The female started growling and showing her teeth. Lucy grabbed her by the throat and pinned her to the ground. She let go when I grabbed her collar. I almost had a heart attack (I was waiting for blood and fur to start flying).

Bubba didn't use his mouth, only his body. It's like a wrestling move when you hold your opponent down for a count of three.
Today we went to his buddy Angus' house to play and he was doing it again. Angus wrangles his way out of it.

I feel sorry that his dogs don't go for walks. Bubba spends hours a day walking and enjoying the outdoors!
Yes my dog has been attacked 3 times in 4 years.
