Breakstick. Easier, more effective & you don't have to worry about the effects of the spray acting on you. Trust me - as someone who has been sprayed before, I can tell you, you do NOT want to suffer the effects of blow back from pepper spray!

Plus, the spray will not act on all dogs. My Chow got hit with spray & all he did was wipe his eyes, sneeze & go after the guy who spayed him. All that spray did was make him mad! A breakstick will work on 99.99% of dogs out there - but you have to be super, super careful using it on non-pit bull breeds or you'll get ate slap up.

Hope this helps.

Blessings ...

Yeah seriously. i honestly have seen no one here in Pasadena/Cali use a breakstick. I know alot of people here use pepper spray so i was just curious on why people would pick pepper spray over a breakstick.

Most people don't even know what a breakstick is...

I choose a breakstick... Pepper spray will not stop an attack unless it's pretty much bear spray, and even then it might not. Plus you have to worry about any lasting damage done to your dog's eyes or yourself, wind has a BIG factor in using a pepper spray. I would rather have a break stick and some good kicks to keep other dogs off of mine. And the use of a breakstick is to open the mouth of a dog, spraying a dog who needs force to get it's mouth off of something won't help.

A dog acting aggressive to YOU, but not attacking, might back off if you sprayed it though. I carried pepper spray anyway until a few months ago.

I never used pepper spray for anything, so, I can't tell you.

However, with my own dogs, I don't mind using a break stick, because I can grab hold of them without getting bit, and get them loose quickly and effectively with the break stick.

Thanks for your answers.

I'm totally for breaksticks over pepper spray. I'm more than sure people here where im at haven't heard of a break stick as i only found out about them here on this site. With the information you all have given me, to me the break stick is more what i was looking for than using pepper spray anyways. Thanks again really appreciate it!!

For reasons of safety against animals AND other people, I carry both a break stick and pepper spray.
My pepper spray is a law enforcement grade CS Tear Gas/Red Pepper Spray with UV Dye.

I guess I have no choice, as pepper spray is illegal in Wisconsin. But you can open carry a firearm.

This is a fine example of why you should spay and nueter your pets folks! Simply not enough good homes out there for these dogs! Look what the pet Utopia is doing to this breed!

I do have to admit that, its by law to get your dogs spayed/neutered here in LA county but it still doesnt stop alot of people from following the law and they are the ones that screw it up for everyone else thats responsible. I myself already have an appointment to get Precious spayed but there are alot of other people that really dont give a shit if spayed or not and if there dogs do end up in a fight i guess they get turned on by it or something especially if as f****d up as this may sound that there dog is killing another.

I did ask this question for people to give me information like how people have done and if that makes me irresponsible for the fact that i did not know about break sticks well atleast im getting information to be more responsible and know what to use if an incident does occur. Again i have not seen one person here in Pasadena or any area close by that has used it and if it takes one person to show another that break sticks are better off than pepper spray then i know i have helped somehow.

Honestly, a break stick can be used as a weapon if need be. But I carry both just because I'd rather try the pepper spray before having to pull out the break stick (unless, of course, another dog has a grip on mine). The police and animal control here view break sticks as "fighting paraphernalia", so I have to be careful.

Yeah, if I was a dog and some guy spayed me, I'd go after him too. I'd do to him what he did to me LOL :P

I would use the break stick all day and all night. Pepper spray you run the risk of you becoming incoherent. Actually,I wouldn't dare use it with people either. You run the risk of you also getting the effects of it.. I'll stick to a pistol for people. Pepper spray someone, yea its gonna suck, but if someone REALLY wanted to they could keep coming even though it hurts.

I used you and your thread as an example of why spaying and nuetering is important. Esp when it concerns the pet population. It really is intended to make a point in another thread.

You need to do alot of studying and keep your dog at home where it is safe an in a controlled enviorment. The ppl that you know that are doing that as a means to sepperate their animals, don't take your animals around them. THEY ARE STUUUUUUPID!

You need to get involved in your local ADBA APBT club.

It is unbeleivable to me that anyone that has any experience with this breed would practice that! An if you have any experience with pepper spray, one does not want to be so free spraying with it!
