Default How big are Labs supposed to be???
So I don't really know many labs, but I'm curious, how big are they supposed to get? I bought a washer and dryer on Craigslist over the weekend and the owner had two of the BIGGEST Labs I have ever seen!

i just met a lab the other day that was nearly the size of a dane- and had the jowls to match. i said "he's cute!!! what's he mixed with?"
the owner said "he's purebred, but he's an AMERICAN lab..."
i told him one of my best friends bred american labs for hunting for a long time- and to me they looked just like the english ones except a bit less square headed... i don't think the guy really knew what he was talking about.
also the dog had super weak nerves, and when it became excited, voided its bowels on the carpet (4 year old dog)

uh uh no way.

this is from the AKC standard:

22½ to 24½ inches; for a bitch is 21½ to 23½ inches. Any variance greater than ½ inch above or below these heights is a disqualification. Approximate weight of dogs and bitches in working condition: dogs 65 to 80 pounds; bitches 55 to 70 pounds.

here's the UKC standard:
Standard height for mature males is 22½ to 24½ inches and for mature females, 21½ to 23½ inches. A correctly built Labrador Retriever male in working condition should weigh between 65 and 80 pounds and a female should weigh between 55 and 70 pounds.

Fault: One-half inch or greater over or under the standard height at maturity.

so the sizes should be the same.

They're bigger than people assume.

Most labs these days are lab mixes so everyone seems to think that they are smaller thna they really should be.

Here is a standard Lab

I've seen larger purebred labs, though. The males get quite big, from what I've seen.

but then they would be non standard (the huge ones-not the ones in the pics- they are lovely)... the breed standard is quite specific about size.

but heck, people are breeding 120 lb merle APBT's... so, why not right? lol.

almost wonder why standards exist anymore...

I had two purebred labs. Both were on the larger side though. Buck (black) was 100lbs and Jacob (yellow) 90lbs. They were both taller than standard.

I have a lady that comes into where I work, they raise guide dog pups. Most of the labs the have are around 24-26" tall and 60-80lbs when grown.

I have 2... Titus is a Lab/Husky mix, and he's probably close to 100lbs... and Zoey, who my daughter rescued off the side of the road, I'm sure is probably not purebred, she's about 60ish lbs. I would think a Pure bred Lab would be about 70-80 lbs... but then again, none of mine dogs have ever missed a meal, so I'm sure mine aren't on the slim side.... none of my dogs are on the slim side.

However.... I do have to say Titus doesn't seem to be as big as the dogs in the pictures above, but I also think he may be taller. He's as tall as a Husky... but doesn't seem "thick".

Holy moly...the dogs in those first two pics are some obese piggies!

Our field Labs, from tried and true working stock, were about 60 and 65 lbs respectively (male was around 65/66 and the female was about 60). They were as pure bred as you can get and actually came from stock doing what the dogs were designed to do.

I refuse to sit in a duck blind with a 110 lb drooling, bumbling idiot of a dog.

Thanks! Not at the moment, we are looking into water sports we can do with her, and anything that involves jumping lol. For now, she does the odd farm chore with Taz at my cousins. We would like to get into hunting in the future though.

My whole family, minus me, has Labs. All are AKC registered, so they are purebred, but they are definitely not in standard!

Parents have a 9yr. old yellow that is actually a good height for a Lab (and everyone says 'he's so small!'), but is fat and we can't figure out why (thyroid, etc. tested). When he was younger, he was about 65lbs.
My one brother's is a good 100lbs., and is HUGE. I will say that he is gorgeous, but he is just way too big for a Lab.
Other brother has two, his older male is probably 80lbs., and he just got a pup that is not yet 5 months and is already 45-50lbs. He looks like a little moose he's so big. I try to (nicely) tell them that Labs are NOT supposed to be that big, but everyone wants to 'big 100+ lb. Labs'
