Default Bark
Sooo, you know how you would expect a big dog, say.....60lbs and up.....to have a big bark? Gypsy surely does, Hoss really does, Alexis' bark makes her sound like she is 100lbs, not 65, and even Mexi, who only weighs 46lbs, has a fairly big bark.

Then we get to Umah (GSD). She is 80lbs, and I think I have heard her really 'bark' three times in her life. She doesn't really bark--oh no, she screams. She will start out with this noise, kinda like a 'Booorr! Booooor!' that isn't too bad, still kind of wierd. And then she turns it into something that sounds almost identical to an ambulance siren. Same tone and pitch and rhythm, I swear. Its enought o make a person's brain bleed sometimes.

I swear even Marsha, who has Chihuahua in her heritage and weighs a whopping 23lbs, has a deeper bark than Umah more often than not!

I fully understand what you are talking about. My collies, both male and females had the most ear piercing barks!

I kind of like the lower barks of my Rottie and Pit!

I feel for you Libby! Brutus does this high pitched scream/howl that sounds like someone is sawing his legs off. He does it when someone is in the yard or if I'm ignoring him. My English Bulldog has a very hoarse bark...like he lost his voice and never got it back. Cupcake has an extremely deep bark. You'd think I had a 200lb mastiff instead of a 50lb dog in my yard.

My rottie mix Jenny (RIP) had a deep bark. Ginger our corgi mix (RIP) had the most annoying bark ever.

Buster my coonhound has a deep bark and so does my airedale terrier cross Rudy but Dixie our 5 month old schnauzer cross puppy has a bark that will make your ears bleed when she is not going roo roo roo.

Mollie has a higher "pitch" bark than Bella, even though she's bigger and older than Bella... and I've always said Maxx barks like a girl, where Zoey, who's half his size, has a deep bark like Bella. Funny how we learn to tell the dogs apart by the pitch of their bark.

Zoey has a big dog bark. Anya doesn't really bark much, but when they play she whines. UGH!

My chihuahua had the deepest bark for a wee little dog. People would hear her bark then see her and be surprised she wasn't a much bigger dog. Thank goodness because she was my alarm for many years!

Poor Umah. With your crew, she doesn't have to have a big bark!!

I've never heard a GSD do that! My GSD has a very big bark, and very loud too... He's not protective at all, but if someone heard him they would run away for sure. He whines a lot though... sounds like a puppy whine kind of.

Duke is an 80lb American Bulldog, who barks like a sissy. It's not squeaky, but it isn't the throaty big-dog bark you would expect. It's more pitchy and sounds like a hound bark, especially when he peppers some "WOOWOO's" into his barking. Sophie is a 60lb bitch that sounds like a 95lb Rottweiler.

Jack is the 6 month old pit mix puppy... and he has the beefiest, most impressive bark I've heard in a puppy. He puts Duke to shame! I should get a sound clip of it some time. I was surprised when I heard him bark when we got him back, because the last time I saw him he was a 12 week old pup!

Taz has a huge deep monsterous bark. When he growls, he sounds like a monster, its enough to scare the crap out of someone, I've never heard a dog growl like him before.

Harmony has a normal doggy bark.

I jokingly tell people that Umah is a Giant (longhaired) Chihuahua. I was kind of disturbed when one person believed me.

I remember when Gypsy let out her very first 'big dog' bark, she was about ten months old. She was sitting on the back of the couch, looking out the window, and just let out this great big 'ROOAWRF!' It scared the crudcakes out of me until I realized it was just her, lol.

My mom's GSD, Kasper, can compete with Umah on the screaming. She has a decently big bark in most cases, but when she gets excited she starts to yip and squeal at a really fast pace.

I got to actually hear MJ bark today. I forgot how it sounded. Someone walked a Black Lab in front of my house, and she went off. She has different tones, sometimes it almost sounds like she's a little hoarse, and other times I had to laugh because she has such a girly tone to her bark.
She does, however, have this deep, throaty growl that she'll let out in between barking, and it sounded so vicious! I've only heard one BIG big dog sound like that! Didn't help her "tough girl" image when she saw I was just standing there watching her and she started wiggling around and doing her happy growl like "don't I sound like a badass, Mom?!?!"

Libby, you should hear some of the GSD's when they are blowing their lid during bitework. It's a frenetic AHHHH! AHHH! AHHH!! GAAHHHH! RAAAHHHH!
